We finally got our Christmas trees up this week. We haven't had the big one up for several years because we have been traveling on Christmas, but this year we are staying put so we put it up. Also we are expecting house guests later this week and excited to share the cheer!

My hubs got the outdoor lights on our big crape myrtle, the smaller juniper, and the railings out front, the back yard trees, and lit up our roof deck pergola, before we left on vacation in late November. Neither of us wanted to face having to do so much when we returned. The big street-facing Christmas tree (we've gone artificial the last three years) is up and lit, but not decorated.

The smaller, real Christmas tree for the back den I'll buy tomorrow and decorate over the weekend. After we went artificial, I found I really missed the scent of a fir somewhere in the house.

I adore outdoor lights. And love Christmas.

We finally had a convergence of weather and free time (and hubs getting over a flu bug!) and put up the outdoor lights, which I love! They are so warm and festive. We bought net style lights a couple of years ago and they make lighting up our shrubs so easy.

I put up the tree (we have gone to an artificial prelit tree in the last couple of years) and decorated the main living area of our house. I didn’t do anything much in the den, where I usually put up my mom’s smaller tree and decorated that. I think I’ll go without that this year, but I have three prelit trees with flexible branches — not the evergreen type but the ones that looks like bare limbs of deciduous trees — that I bought probably 15 years ago and I hold my breath when I plug them in each year, thinking they may have finally died. But so far, so good! They are still in their storage box in the den, and I may take them out tomorrow. They’re nice for a festive glow for very little effort!

We have all the stuff for an amazing Christmas garden/village, but I only do that up every few years. It’s a lot of work, and when I decided not to do that, we had no plans of anyone visiting our house on Christmas. Since then, one of my stepsons has decided he and his gf will join us, but I’m going to stick with the decorations we already have up.

Here are a couple of photos with our tree. I hate that the new LED lights sometimes don’t read in a photograph.

I like some holiday decor but keep it pretty simple. The more that goes up, the more has to be put away and I don't enjoy that. Luckily DH does most of the decorating - he is an artist.

We will have all 3 of our kids and their significant others home this year for the first time in 3 years and I am excited about that. It will be hectic though! Also we will be hosting my husband's family on Christmas Day. He comes from a large family and if even half show up it is 40-50 people, standing room only in our not super large home. But everyone brings food and we do some games and it's a fun time. Our kids love seeing their cousins and a bunch now live out of town, so it is worth the effort.

Since moving to Canada, we celebrated Christmas and New Year with our friends. Now, it’s us and our son’s family. So much fun to celebrate it with a little one! It is more quiet, I don’t host big parties anymore. But we enjoy it even more. Now we are looking forward to our grandson opening his Christmas presents Cheers!

Your decorations are beautiful, Carla and Irina! The snow was a perfect touch!

Laurie, (((HUGS))). It gets easier after a year. Hang in there, and much love. xo

We are decorated! First time in our newly remodeled loft. We LOVE it! We keep things modern and simple (I'll post pics at some point). Festivities are in full swing. Lots of holiday get togethers until the end of the year with friends and clients. We never spend the holidays with family - they are scattered across three continents - and besides, our family is very small anyway. Spending the holidays with family is not something I grew up doing. It was just my brother, parents, and friends!

We always host Christmas Day. We must be home with our doggies during the holidays. That's tradition for as long as I can remember :)

Hope to see more fab decorations!

Oh Laurie , my heart goes out to you . I understand how difficult the holidays can be and it seems that the forced cheer can get to be too much at times . I also fight sadness - maybe by too much decorating - over no longer having a big family to celebrate with and the mad consumerism that has taken over the world .

As to Carla’s other questions about cards and mailing parcels , I’ve stopped with both . Canada Post’s annual strikes have taken care of that and the costs of sending things now exceeds the value of the gifts I was sending .

@ Laurie - I totally get it. During our walk yesterday, I shared with DH how much I grew to resent the Christmas tree! LOL! Put it up by myself, and seemed to always be the one who took it down. Alone.

In my 20’s I picked up a book called ‘Unplugging the Christmas Machine’. It empowered me to take a stand regarding our own family traditions - we DID NOT spend the holidays anywhere but at OUR home (no travel or debates over who’s family got visited) and every year we discussed what elements of the holiday were important to each member of the family. Still, it’s easy for things to get out of hand!

Carla and Irina, thank you for your photos! Definitely inspiring to me, I’m hoping to do a bit more with outdoor decor this year, using stuff I’ve already accumulated. I love the humour of the hat on the Cold Lady!
I’m inspired by the dairy window painting trend this year. Wish me luck on that one lol, this paint by numbers girl will need it!

I'm here to enjoy seeing what you all are doing. Lovely! I have given up on ALL holidays and decorations, as of 2025. My Christmas style was classic and minimalist, and we had a beautiful tree with meaninful ornaments, tasteful wreaths, and small white lights only.

I just went through my Christmas decorations over Thanksgiving, took a carload of stuff (other attic items too) to Goodwill, and prepared 3 boxes of special ornaments - 1 for our older son, 1 for his best friend from college, and 1 for her sister who got married in Oct.. I was inspired to do this as a wedding gift but didn't have time. The mother of these young women passed away 7 years ago just after they graduated from college, and their father unceremoniously emptied their childhood home and got rid of everything, including precious things like Christmas ornaments. They're both really sentimental so I know they'll be touched by the gift. There were a few ornaments from the mid-'60's - the angel looked like Twiggy! Knowing they are going to people who will appreciate them made the chore so much easier.

I don't know....the years of killing myself with shopping, decorations, dinners, cookies, etc over the holidays while working and traveling just finally broke me. The consumerism and waste gags me. No one needs a single thing. Funds have been redirected to charitable contributions. That, plus my Dad's death, just took all the festivity out of me. It's vastly easier and I'm mostly glad, but on the actual days of the holidays, it's hard.

Pretty decorations everybody!
Carla, I like your minimal and elegant decorations ! The little "cold lady" makes me shiver ... I would wrap her in a warm shawl. :)
I always spend very quiet holidays. Minimal decorations for me, usually frantically made at the last moment (did I tell I am a professional procrastinator?), promising myself that next year I will be more organized ... hahaha, illusions are hard to die! A wrath on the door, a few decorations hung to some branches in a vase (from any tree in the garden - I don't have a fir tree at the moment), a bunch of mistletoe hanging from the ceiling and a small Nativity scene. I write and send cards, but at the last moment as well, and they arrive in the new year ...

Carla and Irina - both of your homes look lovely for the season! Classically simple yet carefully thought out. In my. mind I'd decorate our home in a quieter fashion as it's a lot smaller than our former house, but I still have so much decor collected over decades that is both meaningful (this is where my one shred of sentimentality comes out) and valuable . I love a vintage look and mix that in with a collection of Patience Brewster Krinkles pieces that I started collecting 20 years ago. It's a bit kitschy , but when displayed with lighting and greenery, I think it looks pretty great ;). Our tree (white) will go up maybe in another week. I'm in no rush for that. I have a thrifted wreath that I dress up with other picks and pieces I already owned - on our front door. I love Christmas :).

White mini lights on the house, wreath on the garage, and planters made up! Plain store bought wreath with a few natural elements added by me. Planters made up of greenery from our garden and recycled items from the long term collection. (Giant pinecones have seen 10 years!) I decided to omit bows this year. They seem to get droopy once they get wet.

Nothing done inside yet. I’m not sure if we’ll be doing a tree. Didn’t do one last year, and no one missed it. There was greenery throughout the house. The important things seem to be good food with some seasonal treats, music, family games, quiet time for reading.

My mother relocated to Port Hope this year, however I’m holding firm on a low key solstice that started December first, and stretches through to epiphany (January 6).

I’ve started work on the cards. We’re sending out 18 this year - to family and dear friends who live far away.

How is your holiday shaping up? Will it be quiet, or a family frenzy? Are you a minimalist or a maximalist when it comes to holiday decor? Do you send cards? Wrap and mail parcels? Share your holiday pics!

#1 wreatH
#2 planter
#3+4 planters after we got snow
#5 garden sculpture came with the house, and the hat was a random thing. It has become a family tradition to place the cap on the ‘cold lady’
