This is our tree this year - a Fraser Fir up since Dec 1. Hopefully it lasts to Jan 1. I think we finally got the perfect sized tree for this space.

Bean got a new gingie house. She loves it!

And I added to my LEGO winter village this year.

A new little vignette with repurposed items to fill the space on the top shelf behind the tree.

Wow, you all are great decorators! We got a tree yesterday even though we are leaving town for my mother’s in two days. Since it was so late, they only had smallish ones left—we usually get a massive tree to take advantage of our high ceilings.
So here is 1. The tree with its comically disproportionate star on top, acquired with larger trees in mind. 2. As seen from outside the building last night. 3/4 In keeping with YLF theme, little fancy shoe ornaments that were a gift from my stepmother.
I never had Christmas accoutrements growing up but my partner really loves to have a tree, so it’s kind of fun.

Everyone's place looks so good. I feel like we don't decorate as much as we used to ever since we got our 2 kitties, Luna and Nyx. Plus, we travel for the holidays so there was no point in getting a live tree. We opted for a gold faux lit tree and ended up putting Christmas lights around our windows.

I made my own ugly sweater for our condo Holiday Party. I had way too many labels and tags, one even dated 2006, so I made use of it.

I am a Christmas maximalist. I adore decorating for Christmas. The antique tree in photo #5 was my grandmother's. I am especially partial to Christmas trees, snowmen, and nutcrackers.

I'll be baking a number of different cookie recipes that have been in the family for multiple generations. I also plan to make cranberry orange scones for Christmas morning.

Desserts for Christmas dinner I bake once a year, a Chess Pie and a NY Style Cheesecake.

I am minimalist in the holiday department. Kiddo and I cut a tree from the backyard (wooded acreage, mostly firs and spruces). We deck it with four generations of ornaments (I inherited my grandmother's collection, and I add one new one per year, to commemorate whatever long trail we've hiked in the preceding months). We have a bay window where we put an advent calendar and heirloom figurines. House is off-grid, so we keep lights to a minimum, but do lots of candles and incense. Outdoors is birdseed ornaments/garlands. Really, due to increased bear activity thanks to warmer winters, I've been waiting til December or even New Years to put out any bird feeders at all!

I am more ambitious in the baking department, but still have it pretty dialled in at this point: almond crescents, gingerbread cut-outs (used to do a house, but kiddo has lost interest), almond clouds for gluten-free friends, and a wildcard slot that usually goes to chocolate-peppermint crinkles or roll-out butter cookies with a hint of citrus. We are in an ongoing process of scaling back gifts, doing mostly photo albums/handmade objects, but getting the extended family onboard has been a challenge, even with all the grandparents retired and on fixed incomes!

Weird transitional year this year. We usually host a massive family gathering with all the parents, cousins, nieces, nephews, etc., but have lost all of the older generation, and the younger generation has left their respective nests. We are doing smaller events with friends and with the sandwich generation, and an earlier longer trip to the snow. We’ll do a bit better planning next year now that we know what to expect; probably some much-postponed winter travel with friends and family.

I took a few pics last night in the drizzle to show our outdoor lights. The gazebo is at the edge of our yard, where it meets the woods (our community hiking trail passes it), and we get notes from our neighbors how much they like seeing the lit gazebo each year. We got married in it 21 years ago!

We also have a tree halfway up our driveway outlined in lights and it looks so pretty, but something has gone wrong with that outlet — we need to fix it tomorrow when the rain stops!

Thanks for sharing your ideas and photos! So much inspiration and also wisdom putting a perspective on this time of year! I especially appreciate ideas on evolving traditions as time passes and lifestyles change.

I like to get started December 1 and amp things up - just a little - through to mid January. Instead of oatmeal, chocolate chip, or peanut butter cookies, it’s Holiday Spice Cookies, decorated sugar cookies, gingerbread, etc, etc. (More on that later @ indigoprint!)

Change up the seasonal vignettes. Fresh greenery. Candles on the dinner table at night. Dig out all the seasonally appropriate literature (books and saved magazines). A new tradition of spiced ‘cider’ (really just apple juice with peppercorns, cloves, a stick of cinnamon, and a slice or two of whatever citrus is on hand) simmering on the back element of the stove!

I’ve taken to referring to the season as the Solstice Holiday. As a born and bred Catholic, I subject (agnostic) DH to a review of the traditions of advent through Epiphany, and set up a small crèche that once belonged to my maternal grandma. On the other hand we have family and friends who celebrate other traditions - and I enjoy adding diversity to the holiday season - adopting, editing, evolving

We have the extended family thing going on too, and our two adult children are a part of our household. Youngest DS was a December baby, so the 27th is always a celebration. DH is a first generation Canadian of Scottish descent, so Hogmanay (New Years) calls for another party - even if it’s just an evening of games with the family and a toast at midnight!

December and January are the darkest months of the year up here on the 44th parallel - so any little thing that brightens a day is welcomed!.

(Pic below - 4pm!)

Loving this thread! Carla, your outdoor arrangements are festive and it sounds as if you and the family are set for a happy holiday season.

Dee, Janet, Angie -- your decorations are beautiful, fun, and creative, too and Angie, I'm coming over for baking! :)

We always put up a tree, a real one. We always go get it as a family and then I do the set-up while my child picks up every ornament and reminisces about it and never does a darn thing to actually decorate. But keeps me company and seems to enjoy that.

Then I am the one with the job of dismantling it all. I get sad taking it down, but the ornaments are sentimental to me -- many were my mother's, from years before I was born.

A friend sent a lovely holiday planter. We're having family from the US here for Christmas/ Chanukah (we celebrate both and coincidentally, Chanukah starts on Christmas this year) and I have put up some decorations and lights. We don't tend to do a whole lot outdoors, but I do put lights on two little cedars.

Next week, I'll do my annual holiday baking -- lots of cookies coming up!

It just so happens I’m sitting in front of the tree, after getting home from a few days in NYC and unpacking.

I decorated before we left. We have an artificial tree we just started using last year and it does make things easier.

We have items that I group into little festive vignettes with candles and such, here and there, around the house. I’m including pics of those too. And bonus, Sunny with her Christmas bandana from the boarding place!

My husband has our landscape guy put lights up outside. They look great but I haven’t taken pics yet. Will try to add those later!

Your natural arrangements are beautiful and festive, Carla! Good job discussing with the family how you best want to celebrate the holidays. Everyone happy :)

Dee, good job shrinking the tree! Your decorations are gorgeously classic and pretty. The Teddy is adorable!

JAileen, you crack me up ;)

We are in the rental for the holidays. No space to put up our very modern Scandi tree, and nostalgically Dutch and South African decorations - most of it is in storage anyway. Oh well! Next year.....

No guests this year. Just the four of us in Seattle, in the rental, doing our holiday festive thing with others who are at home for the holidays. Lots of eating out, festive gatherings, atmospheric walks, and an outdoorsy weekemd to Whidbey Island with the doggies, which we do every year. We never travel far. We want to stay at home with the doggies!!!

I bought a lemon cyprus tree for $18 to put prezzies under. It's on the coffee table that came with the rental. Sam and Jo are festive in their bandanas. Holiday baking and eating is in full swing. Lots of yummy stollen, cranberry and orange loaf, and white chocolate cookies. Makes it feel more like home :)

My son will spend Christmas proper with his dad's extended family, and then he and I will drive from Chicago to Ohio to spend the week after Christmas with my brother and his mostly grown kids. My indoor decorations tend now towards objects and lights, rather than greenery. I love the fresh stuff, but in a condo it dries out so fast that it's kind of pointless. I also fill my balcony boxes, but I haven't done that yet. Probably tomorrow. I'll post a few pictures when it's all done.

Looks lovely, Carla.
Like last year, this year we bought a table top size tree. We put in on a wide window shelf in the living room.
My decor is minimal, no news here. I now have a nice collection of felt mice decorations, so I used those. A reusable wreath on a door. Still have to wrap the gifts. Once I recover from a stomach flu, I will take and post photos. I like to share holidays cheer.

Carla, thanks for sharing your lovely outdoor greenery. I envy your no-tree plan. I also am the one and only tree decorator and undecorator here, plus we have no company during this season. Our kids out of state don’t come in the winter, our kids in state have formed their own holiday traditions which includes boundaries of not going anywhere, many of our friends will go south or have their own family obligations. This feels whiny, but it isn’t except for being annoyed at having to put up and decorate, and take down, a tree for one person, not me, who doesn’t help.

This year, I finally decided it was time to shrink my Christmas tree, it's an old artificial one. I just used only the middle and top portions of the tree and put the base on a big shoe box for extra height and covered it. Its kinda cute now, so much easier to decorate and take down later.

I do enjoy visiting the various Christmas craft shows that are happening but there's no big Christmas gift exchange anymore, we've got everything we need. We will simply gather with the rest of the family for Christmas dinner in Ontario.

ETA: Lovely festive wreath and planter boxes Runcarla.

I like your low key plans and lovely decor. Our holidays usually involve extra meals with family and friends. It is always more meals around here.

We are working on it. The tree is up with a village underneath. The porch is garlanded and lit. Still to come, wreaths and Santa and his sleigh. I'll add photos when I'm finished.

Late with this annual thread this year!

Store bought wreath with thrift store mini balls, and planters with some recycled materials, greenery from the garden and ravine, and more red balls from the thrift store. This year’s theme is a little more conventional - but DH liked the arrangements made up for the planters.

Nothing done inside yet. I need to fetch more greenery, but it was rainy and icy. Not doing a tree this year. Held a discussion (we are four adults) about what was important for a satisfying solstice. The plan is for a cheque for the food bank and no (or only token) gifts. Good food with some seasonal treats, some family games, some quiet time for reading. We all have some parties/events to attend over the next 4 weeks. I like some greenery inside, but the tree was always a chore and I never got any help. Taking it down made me sad. :-(
