I have gotten lax about changing out my bags. While I don’t use straw in winter or fur in summer, I don’t mind using light through dark bags year round. Or using hand held ones year round.
Like you, I’m more apt to carry my canvas totes in summer, but I do sometimes carry one at other times, it’s rare though.

Lately this coach crossbody is what I have been carrying. I am thinking of switching to this bao bao though. If my hands get chilly, will just pop on gloves or mittens. It’s easier because I drive.

Also, I am not enjoying shoulder bags these days (narrow/slope-y shoulders don’t help). It’s either crossbody, backpack or hand held. All of November I used this Aimee K bag.

Irina--I think for anyone who wants to look good, there is some pressure around bags. For instance, I don't need an expensive status bag, but nor would I go around in something that looked obviously cheap. So even I, in a casual town, feel some pressure to find the right bag. (Because it's hard to find those affordable, but elegant bags.)

Other pressures might be around seasonal bags--certainly I might feel the need to have summer and winter if I lived in a bigger city. I think when I lived in LA, I did do that. And then yes, I expect there is some pressure in certain crowds. If I lived on the Upper East Side and hung out with that crew, I would be sure to be wearing a Burberry, a LV, etc.

Most of my bags get used around the year with one exception in Finds, which is definitely a winter bag! I have wondered about getting a straw bag for summer but have been worried that it would snag on clothing. My Bao Bao bags are year-round favourites for me.

Ever since I picked up the Uniqlo moon back, I’ve had to make an effort to use my other bags. The Uniqlo pouch is just so easy to use!

A thrifted black Coach is my other year round bag. A little red crossbody is used more in summer, and the thrifted burgundy bag comes out for winter.

I quite love the Lepliage bags for travel.

I’m not a bag person and sometimes feel like my purse game needs some work. I’ve become a bit fussy about the weight of things - and this has resulted in some slow going with things like bags and footwear, as I try to find items that are stylish but also light weight.

I like changing bags for the seasons. A couple of shearling bags for fall and winter are my favorite. Since it is rarely cold enough where I live to wear a real “winter” coat, I guess I make up for it by having a cozy-feeling bag.

Canvas bags in the summer, or a lime green leather tote.

I used to have canvas bag with colorful print - but it got completely destroyed last summer and I used small bag with different metallic colors as any season bag. I'm down to couple bag for winter - black and black with some green details, and couple spring/summer bags. Favorite brans used to be The Sak, Lucky Brand, and Banana Republic ( seasons ago ).

Joy - I think you could get away with only neutrals. I would pick two for summer and two for winter. Maybe a cross body and a slightly bigger option.

I used to have a stone or cement coloured bag that was a really good neutral. For me navy wasn’t as good as rust or tan or black or bone. But navy might be great for you.

Nice bags. Living in a more casual town, there is not a lot of pressure to have certain bags. I have a black Baggalini for all seasons, and various cute tote bags for extras. I have a smaller floral evening bag for dinner out.

Yes!
My summer bags are lighter weight and lighter colors and in general a little more boho than my other 3 seasons.
For fall, winter and spring I prefer solid leather shoulder/ cross bodies in black, brown, saddle tan and my wildcard blue with longer straps that fit over layers. A plus if it is a dual hand/ shoulder strap.
In addition I have similar bags in small. " just the basics size" for outings.

My criteria for seasonal switching are about how the bag and strap interact with different weights of clothing. In winter I prefer a longer strap to pass around bulky coats. In summer I prefer a lighter weight material and wider strap, because there’s no jacket to provide additional cushioning against a heavy bag. Here’s a picture of my strictly seasonal pair of small everyday bags. The tan belt/crossbody is summer, the black crossbody is winter. The second picture shows my larger bag, a leather backpack, which sadly has no summer twin yet.

I rotate bags with the seasons and use two bags most days…. A big bag and a small crossbody for essentials. The big one holds gloves, shopping bags, etc. the small one is also worn at home with phone, small wallet, key fobs. and a small comb. The out-of-season bags live on the top closet shelf. A dresser drawer holds all the small bags. I wear more color in summer and more neutrals the rest of the year. Metallic shoes and bags get worn all year. Shoes also live in boxes at the top of the closet when not being worn. My days of climbing even a small step ladder are over due to falls, so I need to move them to a lower spot and get rid of lots of them. I am thinking of sticking to neutrals all year. Does anyone do this?
How does it work?

Yes to seasonal bags. In summer, I’ll prefer lighter materials, maybe canvas or nylon, and lighter, brighter colors. For winter, heavier materials and darker colors make sense. I’m currently using a light colored canvas bag, so not following the precedent. But it has a very useful arrangement of zip pockets which are perfect.

Up until a couple of years ago, I’d have one warm season bag and one for cold season and never switch during the season, except for a dressy little black bag for more formal needs, weddings and such. Now I switch up a few times a week. For everyday, my rotation includes my athletic belt bag worn cross body for errands, a small crossbody leather purse or quilted tote for church when all I take is my phone, Kleenexes and change, and a clear vinyl bag for basketball games.

I think I will try a blue pleather tote today, since I’d like to save the canvas purse for next year warmer season use. While getting it out, I reviewed my bag collection and remembered I have five small Bagallinis, two gray, one each of black, rust and light olive! And lots of other totes, larger and small crossbody purses which do get used a couple times each year to match various outfits and occasions.

I wouldn't say my bags are seasonal, although I do tend to like lighter colors in the summer and darker in the winter. I always like crossbodies that are small but have wide straps. It's all about comfort for me. I do like it if the bag goes with my coat too.

I do switch out my bags seasonally but in summer I usually use just one taupe crossbody bag to get me through the season. It goes well with most of my summer wardrobe.
However in fall/ winter, I will switch out my bags more often. I'm a big fan of Roots crossbody nylon bags and have a couple in black and navy but I also just bought a cranberry one to match my winter toque. I also need to be hands free.

I do have seasonal bags. In the height of summer, that is July/August when it is very humid I prefer a cloth bag. I also am not a fan of a black bag in summer. I prefer medium to smaller sized bags which can be worn on the shoulder or cross-body. I did a recent cull of not so pristine bags and am happy with what I have currently. These days I am preferring neutral coloured bags and shoes. So black and brown. I find taupe very versatile. A navy bag could be a good addition one day.

Winter bags have always been a challenge for me. I gave up and made peace with the solution for a work bag - a lightweight backpack. It doesn’t look pretty but it’s functional. Now I’m looking for an ideal mid size crossbody bag. Lovely to see all your bags, it gives me some ideas.

My bag collection is below with the exception of a straw bag that I use in summer as a tote.

I find tan/cognac a good all year colour for me. The green one gets more wear in winter and the pink one in summer only - but these are my least worn bags. The black/camel Furla is getting less wear since 2021 - but I still really like it and it is my most structured and dressy bag.

I would struggle to wear a large black bag in summer - but the small cross body feels fine. I used to find stone/cement a useful winter colour too but I no longer have anything in this shade.

Jules, I love Brave and Rudsak and your bags look terrific.

Irina, your thoughts on your (very beautiful!) bags are interesting. I especially love your winter bag and of course your Bao Bao!

My lifestyle is similar to both of yours in that I tend to take transit and/or walk most places...with the exception that in my new location, I also bike a lot. I have panniers on the bike and I can slip a bag inside...but I find that, well...it's complicated, and I haven't quite worked it all out, LOL.

I started carrying a backpack in 2018 when I got a Rebecca Minkoff leather one on sale. Then I got a couple of the nylon backpacks and found them very useful for the summer, in particular -- because like Jules, I like to carry a water bottle, especially in the summer months. So I like a bag that works for that. Also for an extra layer I can peel on or off. And a shopping bag that I stuff inside the handbag. Etc.

But the nylon backpacks are starting to feel too unstructured and relentlessly casual for me now and are also very much showing their age at this point after years of very hard wear. The pewter one is covered in scratches/ marks/ peeling finish and the hardware on the blue one is all rusted and the straps are terribly stained.

So I am in transition.

This winter, I've been alternating between my structured Furla (thanks, Angie!) which I wear crossbody, and my Rebecca Minkoff shoulder tote. The tote is big enough to fit just about anything, but also collapses nicely against the body if it is empty-ish. The satchel is not big enough for a water bottle but holds my other things nicely and I do like the structure.

I can't manage a bag in my hand, especially now, since my accident. It has to be crossbody or shoulder (and also has to be a wide strap in either case, because my nerve injury extends to that part of the body). Or it has to be a backpack.

For summer, I'm debating what to do. Besides function, I look for the right colours for summer clothing. I have transferred to a smaller card holder vs. my old portfolio style wallet, so I don't need as much space for the wallet. If I have the bike, it's not as big an issue because the water bottle can go on the bike itself. For Christmas, "Santa" is bringing me bags from Pom Pom London to try. They are too small for water or a sweater but will hold my other stuff. But I suspect I will also need to get another backpack for summer and hope I can find one that fills my needs.

#1/2 WINTER bags, #3/4 my nylon backpacks, #5/6 the Pom Pom London bags I'm going to try out.

Love to see your purse pretties, Roberta! I had my eye on that Fossil satchel at one point as well...

Irina, I came back to add something related but not purely on topic because I've been meaning to mention it for a while. Your post about canvas bags a while back got me thinking and looking around the house. We have lots of canvas bags accumulated from events and shopping with certain ones adopted by my kids for trend reasons. But as I looked around I realized I could also make use of these recycled paper ones. My dad had gifted them to us as "wrapping" for other gifts, a habit of his. I realized they could be quite handy for taking my laptop to work (in a padded sleeve), and they also work well with my current preferred esthetic of earth tone neutrals and graphic black and white patterns. I love finding a fun use for things I already have around, and I do credit you with the original inspiration!

Definitely! In the winter I am more inclined to go without a bag at all, by carrying a wallet, keys, phone, and lippy in my coat pockets. Sometimes just a driver's license and credit card.

Otherwise, I am style seasonal. I have a silver puffy bag and a dark leather bag, which feel wintry to me. For warm weather, I have fabric bags and light color leather bags (white and citron).

For in between, I have a velvet bag (lightweight but cozy-feeling), and a black and white fabric bag, both of which I can wear year round.

We are in the same city and have similar lifestyles - I also don't drive and commute on foot and by transit. I do have summer vs winter bags although they are more based on colour palette. My main bag for each season needs to be roomy enough for a water bottle, small makeup/essentials bag, collapsible shopping bag, etc. In terms of colour I choose neutrals that go with my seasonal palettes; my winter bag specifically needs to work with my outerwear and accessories. I do have a variety of other bags for fun and "evening" wear, but they generally aren't strictly seasonal.

As it happens both current bags are brown and by Canadian brands. The chocolate brown Rudsak is several years old but didn't really become a beloved workhorse until last year. Interesting how that worked; it's a classic style (messenger) and colour for me but didn't fully come into its own until I took off the crossbody strap in favour of the shoulder strap, and brown came back in full force and is fully integrated as a main neutral in my wardrobe again.

Edit, I think I forgot to clarify - the warm cognac bag is for late spring/summer; the chocolate is fall/winter.

I don't know about you but I prefer different bags for summer v winter. And I don't mean - don't wear a straw bag with a winter coat (I actually don't even have a straw bag).
I like to wear fabric shoppers in the warm months, casual and practical choice. My Bao Bao tote is a summer bag. I often don't like to wear a crossbody bag with my summer clothing and my hand held bags come into play.
For winter I need crossbodies and I rarely carry a fabric tote. I need to be able to hide my hands in the pockets. Also a bag should be big enough to hold gloves/mittens and the rest of my things, not too much of it but I carry keys, my phone and a small wallet.
Only a few of my bags crossover the seasons. Because there is one more requirement that is important to me - proportions. I wear a couple of my crossbody bags all seasons but I don't like proportions with puffers. I have one bag that I wear with outwear, it has a wider strap and works better over a chunkier layer. I would like to find something else, though, something more interesting. I was sure I would buy a Bao Bao backpack but hesitated. I might still go for it, need to make a decision soon.

#1 winter bag, #2&3 all season, #4-6 some of my summer bags.

So, how about you? Do you have seasonal bags? If yes, what are your requirements? I understand that in the colder weather especially, lifestyle dictates most of the fashion choices. I don't drive and my style is urban, so these two things define my choices first and foremost.
