I recommend both Kut From the the Kloth and Jag jeans. Not too expensive for experimenting and way better than most mass-market jeans out there. Also - you might want to try the GAP Long and Lean jeans if you wanted a pair of bootcuts to round out your jeans capsule.

Hi Thistle. I recently did what you're doing. I started with revamping my work capsule and just recently moved onto the casual capsule.

I got a pair of the jag pull on jeans in bootcut and they're comfy and flattering. They have a very forgiving wide waistband.

I also got several pairs of NYDJ, a cobalt skinny ankle jean as well as a dark denim trouser jean.

I got the jags and NYDJ at Nordstrom. If you can get to a store, the clerks are very helpful. They know their inventory and after trying a few pairs and seeing what you like and don't like they can steer you quickly to find the perfect pair :)

After I knew I liked NYDJ I found a pair (actually, two) at Rack for 50% off (I rationalized it as buy one get one free, haha).

I also tried the Lucky jeans at Nordstrom but found them to have a much lower rise. They felt more juniors cut to me with a much lower rise. The Jags and NYDJ seemed more forgiving with their higher rise yet are still totally fashionable (in my book).

I also got a couple of pairs of jeans from eloquii by the Limited online but I find their sizing to vary widely from one jean to the next so it's really hard to offer advice.

As for the squishy midsection I am right there with you. If I recall, we have daughters around the same age and I also have a 4 month old so I can totally relate!!! Rest assured you will not look or feel like you're wearing mom jeans with any of Angie's suggestions

Maybe you can review Style & Co. jeans first online on Macy's web site? Macys has constant sales, and I got mine (in petite) at a significant discount. In the Petite line, I found they are cut higher than most with more generous thighs and smaller waist so they work for me; Jags have a slightly lower rise. My NYDJs are very stretchy so I had to size down.

Dunno if they are made any more, but I also have Gloria Vanderbilt straight leg colored jeans that I bought at Penneys and Ross years ago. Once I saw regular sizes sold at Costco.

I really have no idea if the cut changes drastically when going from Petite to Plus size, but I'm thinking that if a manufacturer would consider making a higher rise or cutting pants to fit an hourglass or pear in one size line that it might carry over to another size line. . . .

I am going to check out those Lees. No need to buy premium for my casual life. Besides, I will be far less upset if DD wipes her hands, mouth, feet on me in non-premium denim.

Once I get my work wardrobe sorted, I think my casual wardrobe may need a bit of an overhaul.

My friend swears by Lee and Levis. She buys them at Macy's.

ETA: Yep, she wears the comfort waist mentioned above.

KUT and Jag are certainly worth a try! So is NYDJs.

Try Calvin Klein, James Jeans, Ann Taylor and Lucky too. Macys has an excellent selection!

I've had good luck with Talbots heritage fit as well as Westport jeans from Dress Barn. Keep looking, you'll eventually find the right fit for you.

Not high end but I like the Lee comfort waist jeans too. They are elasticated without looking like elastic waist jeans, and the two pairs I have, at least, do not look like mom jeans at all. Bonus points, they are available in long lengths that I can wear with a 3" heel! (I'm 5'8" and have a heck of a time finding jeans that are long enough here in the UK).

In fact, I think the next time I am in the US I am just going to buy a bunch of them.

I really quite like the Lee Comfort Waist straight leg. I've not measured the rise, but it comes up above my belly button. Even better, they have a comfort waist, which is like saying hidden elastic waist. Looks like regular jeans, super comfy and great for running around.

I've had my best luck lately with Jag. The rise on Kut varies- one style of BF is high enough for me and one wasn't. Last year I bought a pair of NYDJ denim Bermudas I love, but I've never liked their jeans enough to buy them.

I've also had good luck with Style & Co at Macy's, but be prepared to try on a jillion styles to find one you like. Ditto with Lane Bryant -- I have one pair of wide legged denim from there I love. But I donated their colored skinnies due to epic bagging.

Let us know what you find!

I love my new Levi's boot cut jeans, but listening to the fab ladies here, have been trying to find more styles for a jean capsule.

I want them to come up to my waist, so I am in dreaded mom jean territory, but my tummy never snapped back after having DD. it is still waaaay softer than before, to which my mom said Yup. Stays that way. So yes, want it over that.

I have basically given up on GAP and Old Navy. Talbots, my old standby, is not working this season or last. Changed the rise, apparently.

I tried Silver Suki and Natsuki, neither worked.

I am thinking of thing Kut from Kloth next, but thought I would check in and see if anyone has any pointers for mom jeans that don't look like mom jeans.
