Oops, cross posted with much more helpful replies from lisap and Laura!

I think Lisa's post helps explain why some of us were confused.

Hmmm...apparently, scuba is a 100% polyester thick knit fabric (http://www.latextile.com/Produ.....yester.htm)

Or neoprene (http://teliotextures.com/2013/.....ene-scuba/)

Even sewists need to ask this question! (http://artisanssquare.com/sg/i.....#msg355831)

Not sure this clarifies much for me...how about you?

Recently I've seen some knits described as 'scuba' even though they're not really neoprene. They tend to be tightly woven and thick, so in some ways they are similar.

In the manufacturing world, the word "scuba" gets used both ways: as a fabric type (neoprene) and as a style descriptor (fitted , zipped and often with colour blocking and contrast piping). From my experience , anyways....:)

It's my understanding that scuba is the name for the type of fabric the garment is made from (maybe a trade name?) but that's about all I know. I've also been wondering just what it is.

I've only seen leather jackets called scuba and think it is the fitted, zip front style much like a genuine scuba gear top. The seaming and fit can be very flattering on the right figure. It is more fitted and body con than a bomber, another zip front jacket style.

I've seen jackets, dresses, and skirts described as *scuba*. To me, scuba gear is the black neoprene wetsuit an ex-roomie used to wear before surfing. But no, none of the clothing described as *scuba* has been made from neoprene. Is it just another term for a solid, bodycon piece, and that maybe I'd want to size up in it? Thx for your insight!
