I'm so happy to hear that the teacher was responsive. It sounds like you both will be monitoring the situation carefully - and this care, whether or not the other kid's behavior changes, will make the most difference to your son.

Please let us know what happens as the school year progresses.

Great news, Ornella. I hope things soon improve for you and your son. And the teacher too, come to think of it. A student like the schoolyard gang leader must be a challenge. I'm glad she didn't take that out on you and gave you a fair hearing.

Glad to hear you are pleased with the results of your communications with the teacher. Agree that notes that create a timeline are useful. Most teacher care about creating a safe classroom/school experience for their students and they can't connect the dots without all relevant info.

I also think it is good for kids to see role models for handling problems and to know that the teacher is aware of their experiences.

Best to all going forward.

Ornella,
Such great news! Thank you so much for sharing your experience and with such detail. I read your post with great interest and every response to it. My oldest is in kindergarten so I am just beginning the journey. I think it can be really hard as a parent (and most likely a teacher) to piece what we hear and see together into a cohesive picture. The individual incidences may not be to concerning but when sewn together can be very alarming. You just taught your son a very valuable lesson. And his teacher most likely will not push what you say under the rug!

I so admire you advocating for your son and it is great you have everything written down in detail. Though we wish the schools would do more it is understandable that they have to follow certain guidelines or risk being sued.

My DD went through a tough time when she started high school and I wished the school would have done more, but it was actually the school nurses who helped her tremendously. If ever she felt uncomfortable she stopped in the nurses office and they really sat down and listened to her. I also listened to her and understood what she was going through. By the end if freshman year she found her crowd. She transitioned because of that experience more easily when she went away to college.

This is a brief update to my earlier thread in which I expressed concern over some experiences from the school DS was telling me about.

Btw, if you don't intend to read any further, I would still like to stress out one thing - always record your findings. If you ever suspect, or even just feel as a mother that things are not right, write everything down. Casual comments may not make any sense and are easily forgotten, but over time, as vague as they seem, they may add up and make larger picture which can be a cause for bigger concern and therefore ground for action.

In short, I have good news.

Today I went to talk to my son's teacher. I won't go into many details, but the bottom line is that although the teacher took things seriously from the moment I told her why I came, she had really focused once I took the paper with my notes out. I think that fact alone showed that it was not a light matter for me.

As I started telling her things in the order as I had learnt them form DS, I could see her adding things up from the behaviour and rumours she noticed in the classroom and it was clear that everything I told her made for the likely scenario of what is happening when the kids are out of the classroom. She had promised to talk with the boy A (the ringleader) and to monitor with the new awareness the dynamics between the kids. She was very supportive and actually said several times that it was by no means premature warning, but it was a good thing I came and talked to her.

For now I trust that she will make the first step to end this situation and I hope my son will have breaks to play and relax. We'll catch up in a few weeks to see if he had noticed changes and how he feels.

Izzy, my friend whose son was also sometimes targeted by this schoolyard gang, has appointment with the teacher too and will also relay what her son had told her about the events.

Thanks again to everyone who was supportive and understanding on my previous thread. Between your advices and talking to close people I was fully prepared for today's conversation and went home with the result I wanted.

Onwards and upwards.
