I'm a few inches shorter than you are, with hips, and I carried my books in a messenger bag during law school. It worked fine. It was actually better with my proportions than a backpack, I think, because short torso + ample rear is a really bad combo with a backpack. And I think there may not be avoiding a bag that's less ideal proportionately when you have to carry a lot around, so I'd just get one you like that seems sturdy and comfortable.

If you do get a messenger bag, I definitely suggest one with a thicker strap, though, to distribute the weight of all the books a little more comfortably.

A link would help. And I'm silly but I always thought a big bag would make me look smaller.

Can you post a link of the picture from another site? I think that would help figure out proportions.

The bag is more of a cross body/hand bag. If I could put a picture of it in this thread then I would, but I don't know how to do it.

No idea how heavy your bag was, but it couldn't imagine carrying everything I had to carry in a messenger bag. But then I suppose books could have become electric, same with notes. Rather than schlepping the two tons of textbooks, binders and paper that I did.

I recently bought a laptop backpack to carry to and from work as my shoulder was getting sore and I didn't want to be lopsided. If you just have an iPad, that would probably fit well in a messenger bag.

Otherwise, I would put function over fashion. And you can find some pretty nice backpacks out there.

I know I'm going to have a lot of binders and folders. I read the reviews on the bag and people say it has enough space along with their being a picture of the things you can fit in it. The style of the bags is cute and everything but I just don't want it to look gigantic on me.

I am about the same height and wore a similar messenger bag throughout school. When it comes to school bags, they almost count as gear, so funcionality comes before fashion, IMO. I'd suggest you load up the things you commonly carry before committing to the style, though. For some people (like me), they worked better than a backpack, but for others they just don't have the capacity or proper shape or the style that is most versatile for them. My DS tried a messenger bag last year and was disorganized because the bag wasn't easy to load and unload, and it didn't seem to fit everything the backpack had. He ended up switching back to a backpack.

My backpack finally broke and now I'm on the hunt for a new one. Instead of your typical backpack for school I want a messenger/cross body bag this year. I found one with the measurements being the length is 15.7 inch, height is 11.8 inch and depth is 7.5 inch. The thing is though I am 5'2 with a frame that isn't petite (I have pear shape). I'm just wondering if it'll look big on me considering my height.
