Ele - I agree. Warmth is paramount.

Katiepea - I have been there too. I think DH and I have even had books in our coat pockets!
(note to rest of world. You in the US have a much bigger baggage allowance than any one else!)

One thing I'll never understand is how people can fly in dresses, sandals and shorts- aren't they cold? I see this all the time and it flummoxes me, since I'm always freezing on airplanes, regardless of time of year or destination. For me it's jeans, boots, a long-sleeved top and a pashmina that can double as a blanket. Warm socks always, because the first thing I do is take off the boots for long-haul flights!

When I think about my travel experiences I think I had two different personas. When I travelled for business, I was Ms Professional Katiepea which meant suit/heels/impeccable makeup/hair etc.

However (*scary music sounds*) when I travelled for leisure, particularly if I was going somewhere cold.......

Whilst I believe I looked neat and tidy, I would be more concerned with maximising my luggage allowance than appearance. Therefore, I'd say my look would consist of heavy coat, long boots, two thick jumpers, jeans etc and a carry-on bag that I would pretend looked light as a feather (but really was as heavy as a bowling ball).

Naughty, I know! I will make sure that next time I fly I take style a lot more into consideration.... Maybe just one jumper, and the skinnies tucked into my boots....

Ha ha ah Sharon- I have the "Lost Syndrome", too!

I don't fly very often, so I don't have a uniform; but I try to be comfortable. (And because I wouldn't want to slide down the emergency exit in a dress- I don't fly in them) I would probably opt for jeggings, flats, and layers on top.

I wear jeans, a long sleeve t, and a cardigan over it. And I pack a large pashmina in my carry-on just in case I need more warmth. Actually my carry-on is more a pack of "things to do, eat and stay warm in".

When we flew in February, I wore my black ponte knit pants & flat boots on one flight & then denim leggings & flat boots on the return flight. I always go for comfort & layers as I usually get cold when I fly. I also like the concept of wearing your bulkiest item if you can to save on packing. And, I now try to just travel with a carry-on which provides me with quite a bit options so I can change mid-flight as well, don't have to worry about lost luggage, and helps me really put into practice the concept of a capsule wardrobe & evaluate my true workhorses. Oh, and I always always always wear a cross when I fly --- just makes me feel better I guess!

I, too, remember the days when flying was a special event and we would dress up for it. When flying nowadays, I aim for a smart casual look. I wear long sleeves or light-weight layers as I am almost always chilly on the plane. I also make sure I am wearing socks or tights so I won't have to stand barefoot when going through security. I like to carry a purse or tote that is large enough to hold a cardigan and a book, and I make sure that I carry my glasses and extra contact solution in case my eyes feel dry and I need to remove my contacts.

I had to travel interstate for a funeral this weekend, and was very interested to see what people wore to travel.

I remember travelling when I was a child, and air travel was a big deal - people got dressed up. I always dress with several things in mind:
1. The respective climates of my origin and destination (usually carry an extra layer)
2. The fact that I will be sitting next to a stranger (nothing revealing)
3. The remote possibillity of the plane falling from the sky (low heels, natural fabrics and long pants/shirts to maximise the chance of injury free survival)

I saw one young lass who was beautifully groomed and was wearing a very up to the minute blazer with '80s shoulders. I was thinking how nice she looked until she walked away and I saw the bottom half - very short white "bubble" shorts, bare legs and sky high strappy sandals.

So what do you wear when you fly?
