@Janet
As long as the clothing has been laying long enough it's safe. Things like bed bugs etc just won't stay around if there's nothing for them to eat. I've found stuff people left lay and it was in really good shape once out of the wash. Found a towel at a camp site once that looked really nasty. Once I looked closer it seemed like someone spilled some stew or something and used the towel to mop it up. It doesn't make much sense that they'd throw it out on the ground at a remote camp site if it just had some stew or something on it. But, when you factor in alcohol it makes a whole lot more sense. A soak in a bucket of water, a hosing off with a garden hose and a trip through the washing machine and that towel turned out to be one of the best ones I have. Mold of course might rot fabric and render it useless but if it's just a little mustiness I could care less, it heightens the mystery. How long has the pile of clothes been there? Who put it there, what were they like? Typically musty smells leave with some laundry soap and bleach. I found a really nice pair of athletic pants in an old shopping cart once, covered in grime. Once I washed them they were nearly new and in great shape. They were a top brand too. Things are often not as they first appear. My policy when I find something I might want is when in doubt, take it home. If it turns out I actually don't want it, just throw it away. But, have a little fun with it first and see.

Interesting. I’d definitely take a look at what was there, but I’m wary of anything left behind in a property (I’ve worked on a few in my lifetime!), unless I can throw it all in a heavy duty wash first. Call me a germaphobe! I can’t take the musty smell of a lot of thrift store finds anymore, even though I poked through a lot of them in my youth. I’d probably offer up the lot to my artist community friends.

Hehe. It was for my 7-yr old ward, trick or treating. So really, even more leeway for bad sewing. It did look pretty good tho, I will say that. She wanted a princess costume. I had to make it complicated

@rachylou
True but it's still a complicated piece. I suppose if you wanted a costume like that it would be pretty hard to just go buy one. If you did find one it would probably cost a bit. That hasn't been the style for over a hundred years. Must have been quite an event you were going to.

@rachylou I'm not great at sewing either, I couldn't sew something like a suit for instance. Typically I do simple alterations, replace the elastic in a pair of pants for instance. I'd be curious as to what kind of costumes you have sewn.

My clothes sewing has been limited to costumes. Dare I try a real skirt or something? Otherwise I’m about the home decor - quilts, curtains. I want to try a slipcover for my very difficult rolled arm, skirted, t-cushion sofa. Why didn’t I get a simpler sofa? Lesson learned!

YKK, I see really good older sewing machines going for a song at estate sales all the time. No computer chips but plenty of stitches and mostly metal parts; if it's working, just take it to a shop for a tuneup and you're set.

@suntiger
Yes I sew, my sewing machine is getting kind of worn out though , thinking of replacing it but I need to find a simple unit that will do some things like stretch stitch and button holes without being full of damned computer chips. I have a computer I don't want one in my sewing machine.

I love to find a pile of old clothes if they're in reasonable shape, I don't much care what they are. Second hand stores are awesome, I love browsing the big ones like Goodwill or Salvation Army. The really fun stuff is always in an old shipping container or something though to be honest. The less I know about what I'm going to find the better. Huge dresses, curtains and bedding yield the most fabric but smaller items like t shirts etc are good to. Clothing worn by very heavy set people yields a lot of fabric as well. Just hours of fun. I like even being around fabric, love browsing fabric stores or clothing stores at the mall, getting lost in the racks. All the colors, textures, styles, the cuts the seams, each one a piece of art.

Sort through it but carefully! I've been helping mom sort through her boxes of clothes and there was some (ahem) evidence of mice :/
There was a post on Bored Panda (I think) about a lady that totally overhauls things she finds at thrift shops. It was impressive! Do you sew?

My brother bagged up every bit of textile when my mom passed, and then forgot to get it to me until years later. It was more personal, but I went through, found a dress to alter into a skirt, linens that just needed some attention, and donated things we really could not use. Over the years since I have had the table linens restored and either use them or gave them to my niece to use them. I see posts about just donating stacks of useful things and cringe.

Suppose you bought a house, either to rent it out or flip it or what ever. Either way the place has 10 or so boxes of stored clothing, bedding etc in it. What would you do?
Myself I'd start sorting through every last thing with a eye to using the fabric, altering it, seeing what I can make out of it. I wouldn't care if it was a table cloth, a dress , a t shirt a curtain. It's fabric and if it had properties I like I might make something out of it. True, there'd be a lot of trash in there that I wouldn't do anything with. Just ugly fabric or kids clothes with not enough fabric to blow your nose on. But, there'd be some real gems too and it would be a lot of fun.
