Carla--these are great--thanks for sharing! I'm glad you have scarves that you don't treat "too preciously," and it does seem you try and wear most of your wardrobe. I am having trouble loading the text on these, but that top right one is nice--is that buildings?

Ask, and you shall receive! 4 are large silk squares - 3 thrifted/1 gifted. The other two are l-o-n-g rectangles - winter weight pashmina, and summer weight cotton. The silk squares get the most wear.

FWIW, I don’t treat them as too precious and have put them all through the wash (in a mesh bag, delicate cycle) and they came through just fine!

Ket--those are great--thanks for sharing. Really love the vintag-ey orange one. Mine was a black and white stripe--probably polyester. I loved it, but the only problem was my head looked flat if I did not put my hair up. I also have a small head, and flat at the back! Still looking to up my hair scarf game. I did just get a cute gold headband!

I have turbans made of jersey knit fabric. Is this what you mean? (See attached finds.) They're not actual velvet or felt, but they are worn as such with as much coverage.

I actually like scarves tied up into turbans more, so I haven't worn either of these much. I have a small head--or maybe oddly shaped. (I needed a YOUTH size motorcycle helmet in my late 20s to ride Vespa--not kidding, no pun intended ) And yet, a lot of hats feel too snug on my head. I cannot stand having anything on my head that adds pressure or feels too tight. Scarves just feel easier. But I really love both of these so I bought them. No regrets and yet, I don't wear them much. Other thing, I find with my entire head and hair covered, I really have to be sure I have makeup on and my face isn't puffy. Otherwise, I just feel very "blob" like in them. Probably sounding super picky right now admitting that...

Suz--such a great assortment of scarves--very deliberate. Like looking through a book of pictures. I like how some are muted and some are more colorful--I like how that feels different when I wear them.
Sloper--I have seen some good videos on YouTube. I think scarves are good for practical use, and I have a mind to start using them to protect delicate neck skin. The large cotton ones from Target--do you wear these as shawls, or around your neck?
Lisa--I do like leaving a scarf long like that, and sometimes even simpler--just tying it in back. Sometimes just a big swath of fabric can look good.
LJP--I watched that show, and I saw a lot of scarves, but not around the hip. I agree, that look needs some playing with before wearing.
Ket--gonna try that.

LJP--totally agree about the feeling of not knowing how to make a scarf look natural. I do find that there are ways, but it is probaby easier for me, because mine are cheapos. Just wound around the neck, infinity-style, or a cowboy knot, usually.
JAileen--if these are the ones you wear in winter, I just love that. I think we tend to either have lightweight ones in summer (that can look silly) or woolen ones in winter. But using these in winter--I can see how that would do as a great solution for a drafty room.
Bonnie--very pretty scarves--they remind me of batik prints. When I have had a shape like that, I have just done a loose tie-once underneath the bust, which worked well. I have a large bust, so a tie on the bust did not work.
cat2--very innovative. I bet the cold-climate countries of the world have been doing the second for centuries. But the first--that is a good idea. Do you tuck the scarf in, or just let it hang over?
Sal--always a conundrum about what to do with sentimental pieces. If I recall your style...it seems like you would style scarves well. I remember you wearing smart, easy pieces.

Carla--I like all those ways you describe, but I usually don't do on the bag. Looks cool, but I am not bold enough. Would love to see more of your collection!
Angie--I have to say, I love your frequent emphasis on the importance of functional clothes. "Scarves falling all over the ground when dog walking," indeed. It is always nice to hear that these are important considerations.
Irina--IKWYM about scarves looking a little "stiff." I think this is why people constantly go to the internet to figure out how to style them. The cowboy knot has been great for me lately, esp. with a more casual scarf. I also never thought about looking secondhand for silk ones, but I will start now. Good idea.
Ket--a tartan blanket scarf sounds fantastic, and just the thing to brighten those snowy (or grey) days. I had an actual turban for a while--have you ever had one? Mine was a black and white stripe--very cool, and very useful for pale people who are supposed to cover their heads in summer.
Dee--I have to pin in my scarves to hair, but even so, I struggle, too. I agree that styled scarves can feel "forced," which is why I usually try for very basic, basic knots.

I’m also intrigued with the scarf styled at the waist, although it may be tricky for my body type.

I still wear and enjoy my scarves. Mine are mostly larger square or rectangular, in wool or silk blends. Soft and lightweight. The Missoni in the first pic is a rare chunkier knit — warm enough that I don’t wear it a lot but I love it.

I usually just do the simplest one-loop-around-the-neck thing. It works for me. These are from the last two years. I like the accent of color/pattern and a bit of warmth without heavier outerwear, that’s also easily removable if I warm up.

You know what I *would* like to try (although it may look too try-hard in my environment) is the scarf-tied-across-the-hip trend as inspired by the latest Celine show. Folded into a large triangle and tied low on the hip over pants/jeans or a skirt - it looks so cool! I did keep one huge scarf from my edit yesterday for this very reason.

I adore scarves but don't to wear them often right now, mostly because my casual lifestyle and hot climate doesn't leave many chances to sport a scarf.

The scarves I do own are across a few different styles, those that are long and rectangular. I sport those draped a couple times around the neck and the ends left long or as a euro knot if I want more warmth. I have one circle scarf in wool that I pair with a wool coat for winter.

I also have a couple of rectangle scarves in silk and non silk that I do in various knots. I've googled Hermes scarf knots in the past and gotten some great ideas for tying square shape scarves. Although my favorite knot style for a square scarf is left mostly long like on this page. https://www.cutoutandkeep.net/.....silk-scarf

I love scarves, but just like my handbags (in reference to Lisa’s post) I probably have way too many for my present, casual lifestyle.

Beautiful large squares and rectangles in silk all nicely stored away.

I need to cover up while in the sun, and also want to protect a very large surgical scar, so I always wear something. Since my life is casual, it’s usually a bandanna or small floral cotton square. Silk in winter helps protect from itchy wool sweaters. I also have some very long cotton wraps (Target has been a good source for this).

I wear them a lot, both for warmth in winter, and as accessories. I don't tie them on my head because they'd just fall off, at least the silk ones would.

If my hair were longer, I would not wear them nearly as much. But they offer great neck coverage in cooler weather. And they also allow me to incorporate pattern (and often, pattern mixing) and more colour into my often neutral outfits. Plus a bit of drama.

The first four are strictly for warmth scarves -- worn as Angie describes (except the infinity scarf, which just loops). The others are worn indoors as well, mostly more or less as shown in the photos. They are of varying sizes and shapes.

I have edited down to about eight but could probably go to about four and not miss the rest. One or two are sentimental though and they don't take up much room so I will leave them for a while.

My use of scarves is now limited to cooler weather and I do enjoy wearing them with my coats and jackets. However, they tend to slip off when I use them in hair, and for one reason or another they look off when tied around my neck as an accessory to my outfit.

I love scarves. I almost entirely wear them tied around my head as a turban or head scarf. So far, I find the opposite: every cute silk scarf I find is too small to tie into a hair turban, which kind of irks me lol! Aside from my hair/head, I don't wear scarves in the summer.

Winter is another matter. I wear them a lot during the winter, even indoors. My winter scarves/shawls thus far are my own handknit creations. I do want to make or buy a tartan blanket scarf this year. Otherwise, I like knitting my scarves and shawls. I like them substantial in size. And I usually wear them wound a few time around my neck then knotted to stay in place.

I have a great collection of silk scarves but rarely wear them. I tried again last winter and wore small squares around my neck with crew neck sweaters. But it felt too styled and not me. I use small ones tied to a bag sometimes.
I usually wear one long thin wool scarf on a plane and take one long linen scarf as a cover up on a beach and one square silk one for walks/dinning out. Silk scarves are tiny when folded and fit nicely in any bag.
As for a material - I wear silk, linen, have a couple of cotton ones and wool, cashmere in the winter. I personally avoid synthetic fabrics if I can help it and would rather buy vintage silk. My DH gave me a vintage Rick Owens silk long scarf from 2013 collection. I cherish it!

I don't use scarves decoratively much, these days, Carol - occasionally, when they match my sweater to make a twinset! (Finds #1 and #2). I love that I tie a silk neckerchief into a square knot. Classic. Practical.

When it's cold, I need to wrap up. Which means a woolly scarf tied into a simple, chunky euro knot. Neat, effective, punchy, out of the way, and warm. The rest of my scarves that I tie that with are in Finds, below.

Since I'm on foot a lot - with doggies often in tow - I can't wear scarves that get in the way of me reaching down to pick up blind little Yorkie Sam, or flapping in the wind (windy by the water, where we live!). Scarves need to be secured, IYKWIM. No long dangling ends. Although soooo pretty if you can manage them drapey and tousled!

I use scarves quite a bit. I prefer the bigger squares vs smaller neckerchiefs. Currently I like to wear: (1) scarf tied like a men’s tie, (2) threaded through belt loops and tied off to one side, (3) tied onto a bag.

No, sorry--I don't have any cool link to a TV show about scarves. Really I am hoping to find out more about scarves, and help anyone else who wants to use more scarves.

I find that they make such a huge impact on any outfit--they can be so noticeable and colorful.

I also find that the affordable ones today tend to come in the same shapes, which are either a giant square, or a giant rectangle. They tend to prove useful just one way, which is sort of flung around the neck several times. If I play with it for a few minutes, I can also get a good Rhoda/fortune teller head scarf going, but it is a bit too big.

I thought people could share any links, articles or personal thoughts on scarves.

My question is: what other shapes are out there? Because I would like to try something new. I like the little neckerchief style, and I also like anything that can be neatly done up in the hair (or as a head cover).

If you do participate in the decorative neck scarf look, so common today, what size do you use, and how do you tie it? Do you use silk, imitation, or some other material?

1)Rose McGowan rocks the retro neckerchief style in Jawbreaker
2) ways to tie a bandana
3) a typical neck scarf look today, as I see it
