Kappy, I've been tweaking the closet too, as I am slowly evaluating and purging some closet orphans. Scarves always seem to be challenging -- a way to store them that is 1) easy to see what you have, 2) space-saving, and 3) doesn't wrinkle or rumple the scarves. As with so many things in life, well, 2 out of 3 isn't bad.

Heh, maybe next I'll share a pic of my insane glove collection. My grandmother was a glove buyer for a department store in the 50s, so I have an entire storage drawer full of gorgeous, mostly vintage gloves. Many of them have never been worn, other than my sister and I attempting to squeeze our hands into them!

AJ, it's about 16" long, and one end is narrow, while the other has a hole in which you can thread the other end to create a bow, a short knotted tie, an ascot, etc. And yes, CocoLion, It was definitely from that 70s era of jaunty short scarves and bows tied at the neck for office wear!

My mom had a lot of items still in her closet from the late 70s and 80s -- the years when I was in school and she went back to work. I think that was such a happy and productive time for her, and why she held onto those clothes long after she no longer wore them. Going through her closets was like time travel!

These look great, Janet - I've done something similar and I love seeing the colours together.

They look really pretty like that.

I hang my scarves on a lamp rod (of all places) with my belts so I can see them and they don't get creases. That is the home for those in heavy rotation. The others get folded in a basket.

I want to see you model the scarfette! That was the era when a womans scarf was a symbol for a tie in the work place. Does anyone else remember all of the mandatory bow blouses from that "Dress for Success" era? I am sure I am dating myself with that one!

I've never heard of a scarfette. How big is it?

Good info! I love to hear how others have their closets organized. I have been working on "tweaking" my closet lately. Initially I had all my scarves hanging on an Elfa Hangmate Belt & Tie Rack, I had 3 of them hanging with pushpins on one open wall of my walk-in closet. I also had all my necklaces/bracelets in the Canvas 80-Pocket Hanging Jewelry Organizer (also from The Container Store). However, I decided that the setup didn't work for me at all after a while. I really needed to know how long the necklaces were when getting dressed so having them tucked into pockets wasn't ideal. So I moved my necklaces/bracelets to the Elfa belt/tie racks and bought a Scarf Organizer from the Container Store (it hangs on your closet rod) for my scarves.

Thanks for the info! Mine are stacked on each other so I can't see them all, which isn't terribly useful. I'll try this method out

Yeah, some of them do get a bit creased, but I have a little hand steamer that I can use to get the creases out when I wear them. I just don't have enough hanging room in our closet to hang scarves, unfortunately.

Janet, do you find your silk scarves get too creased when stored this way? I don't wear mine often and I was thinking of doing something similar, but was a little concerned about creases. Though right now they're hanging on a scarf rack and getting creased in the middle anyway...

Y'all are gonna think I must have bored. But I just got frustrated with the tangle that had become my scarf shelves. Scarves are so hard to keep organized!

So I grabbed a couple of unused storage boxes of varying kinds, and sideways-stacked the folded scarves in two of them. The flimsier, slipperier silk scarves are folded in a pile in the see-through bin. Now I can, in theory, see everything lined up without them being in piles that fall over. There are a few that get hung up in the little armoire I use for scarves, jewelry, camis, tees, hats, swimsuits, and travel stuff.

And yes, I have an insane scarf collection. Blame my mom. Probably half of these were hers.

I just had to share the second picture with you all. Have you ever seen such a thing before? The "scarfette"! Circa 1978 according to the handy pamphlet that accompanies it, which tells you the many ways your scarfette can be styled. Hehe. I just couldn't toss it, it's too retro fun.
