Hi Joy --

Agreeing with all the "disclaimers" above -- don't count on it to add structure, not through belt loops, gotta be ok with a little 70s/boho vibe -- but I like doing it every so often, usually to add a little interest to an otherwise all-solids outfit.

For me (Rectangle with undefined waist) I find wearing it lower-slung and *under* a jacket or cardigan works. Plus I suck at knots so this way I can hide mine!

Seconding/thirding that the bloggers at Academichic do the look a million different ways; some might work for you.

ps Dying over the waitstaff/dishcloth remark! That will definitely be stuck in my head the next time I try this, ha.

Diana, LOL, now I have the image of waiters with dishcloths. The "scarf" I have was actually intended to be worn at the waist. It's a strip of fairly substantial woven cotton fabric about the weight of twill but with a design woven into it . There's not a lot of fabric to deal with. I may also still have some dressy ones around of heavy silk. I often just wraped them, tied it once, and tucked the ends under so that nothing hung down, cummerbund style.
AJ, thank you for the link. I found the scarf worn obi style with a belt over it especially interesting.
Di, that's a wise comment about having a defined waist for this to work. Mine's not very defined anymore.
Sveta, I loved how you styled the skirt. Thank you for correcting me about the belt color. I liked that it wasn't high contrast against the skirt with that outfit. I'm looking forward to your picture.
Janet, it is hard to always have the right belt, isn't it? this appealed to me as a way to add interest on a very hot day without wearing a scarf round my neck.
Thank you for your help, MaryK, Taylor, Kim and Freckles. I need a whole day (or two) to once-and-for-all figure out how to take a photo with my camera, upload it to the computer, and post it on YLF. I don't know how you do it so often, MaryK, but am so glad that you do.

I've done it, and I think it works best when the scarf is not necessarily recognizable as a scarf and looks more obi-like.

Despite my substantial belt inventory, I always seem to lack just the right belt for an outfit, so *sometimes* the scarf treatment works.

Oh, I must confess: I tried my grey /white /black square scarf as a belt with the yellow skirt and quite liked it. That was the first time I really liked a scarf used like a belt. I was just playing around so I did not wear it out. I promise to post a picture next week, Joy.
BTW, my belt was brown in the outfit you mentioned and the jacket was grey.:0

In fabric and notion shops they used to sell belt loop things that you put the scarf through for a more refined look. These actually looked great.

I find of course it depends on the person and the outfit. Let's see...

Edit: Rather they were a belt buckle that you put the scarf through and the ends stayed inside so the look was more polished. A different look than the other ones which can also be quite beautiful.

I like and wear them with dresses or over tunics, usually at my high natural waist. I don't like them with pants (in the belt loops) or when they are too low slung (reminds me of how some waiters carry dishcloths in their belts to wipe down tables).

For this look to work, I think you need a very thin fabric, and a fairly long and narrow shaped scarf, otherwise there is too much fabric. The scarf also does not work very well as a functional belt (as someone mentioned above, you can't use it on its own to create definition). So, for me, it works because I have a very defined waist and everything pretty much stays at my natural waist on its own.

Sveta had a great looking grey belt with this skirt and her striped shirt. I'll look for a nice grey belt. MaryK's white belt was fab too.

Not all that different from an obi belt. For people who need the belt to do the
work of smartly indenting the waist, a narrower elastic belt underneath can
help.

Following a link here that I cannot find now, a blogger wore some outfits using scarves or patterned fabric for belts. I loved to do this in the early 80's but haven't sported this look for years. Today playing in my closet with the yellow raisin Halogen pencil skirt, I came across one of these scarf belts that goes beautifully with the skirt but is a bit too stiff for neckwear. So, dear Forum members, would wearing a scarf as belt (tied in a square knot) be hopelessly frumpy and outdated? Or is the look old enough to possibly look fresh again?
