Oh, if your collection is excessive, mine is obscene. I have a problem. Many of mine are sentimental (some inherited from my mom), and like you, I like prints and fabrics, and scarves are easy to store and never have fit issues!

Mine are folded and sort of "filed" in storage bins in my "accessory armoire" where I keep hats, jewelry, scarves, graphic tees, swimwear, etc. I should do an edit, but every time I try, I maybe get rid of one or two. It doesn't help that I just bought two new ones while I was traveling (bird prints, can't resist them!).

I sort my seasonally, and hang them on velour hangers by color. When I tire of mine, I typically put them in a holding zone for awhile, unless I realize that they aren't really "me." Those I will purge.

Scarves have been having a real moment for awhile now -- and it sounds like you're having fun with the fresh kerchief look, too! As long as you have space, and you're not overwhelmed with choices (and you can use the holding zone to help with that), you're good to go!

Unless you don't have space, I see no reason to get rid of scarves that you like and wear, or if they are a style that you don't wear now but will wear when they come back into style. I keep what I'm currently wearing closest to me/where I can see it easily. And if I have some scarves that are in season but I'm not wearing them but want to, I move those to the most visible spot.
The purpose of purging is to have what remains work. There is no one size fits all rule, although, at least here in the US, what people think is "right" makes extreme swings back and forth. In most areas.
And you can keep items on display like works of art if seeing them gives you pleasure even if you aren't wearing them.

Thank you Diane and summer!
Vildy what a great idea with th one hanger and then holding it up to your outfit. Love that!
Windchime - yes unless it is absolutely huge ( and even then if th material drapes well ) they all fit me

Yeah, the beautiful thing about scarves is that they're easy to fit! :)

You've made great progress on sorting and organizing them. I bet you'll get more use from some of them because they're well organized.

I like Angie's suggestion to sort them by season; I'm going to try that with mine.

Counting warm and cold weather, I must have at least twice as many as you. I tend to store the outerwear ones loosely folded in a small bookcase.

The (mostly) indoor ones, I hang on one of those thin velour hangers.
This keeps them kind of shaken out plus I hate to put things back, so this is easy peasy and nothing falls off.

I keep a loose sort on mine by color palette. So I have navy together and red together and orangey leopard together, pastels together, etc. I can also pick up the whole hangerful and hold it against what I'm planning to wear. And if I'm deciding whether something is a genuine orphan and likely to stay that way, I just hold it up against all the hangers and if nothing would please me with it, I guess I just don't wear that item after all.

Yeah, that looks like it. Mine is grey, and I admit to so far only having used the top row or two. I am in the midst of a closet reorg that is going into it's 3rd week now - HA ! It did occur to me once I got it hung up that if you used all of the sections it could get pretty thick and heavy. I think it's best used for thinner silkier scarves...

This is my final purge and sort and storage at least for now

I put the more delicate silk scarves and well as neckerchiefs in the drawer, put away the ones will wool in a seperate storage bin , and hung the rest .
LisaP is this the IKEA hanger you got? I have had these for a while and I like them but I was actually going to get rid of them bc I have trouble finding things at the bottom of the hanger - as you can see I am not a neat folder or hanger ;-)
But I suddenly thought I will just cut off some of the rings and perfect !

I have a serious scarf problem.
As you said, they always fit, and I am easily drawn to the gorgeous fabrics and prints . I do separate mine by season - but despite owning about 8000 summer weight scarves , I only wear them in fall, winter and spring. I am always trying to find that perfect storage solution for home - and just bought a funky old-school looking macrame ring thing from IKEA that seems to be good.

Good job you're doing! I got rid of 14 of them and made a mental note that I wanted to clean out at least ten of them, so I did.

I love seeing how everyone stores their pretty scarves and I've been storing mine, folded, in a hanging shoe rack, and have them color-coordinated from light to dark, top to bottom. A couple of my nicer scarves (Burberry and a large silk one) are hung.

Like you, I have a lot of scarves, and wear them in every season. If you're still wanting to purge a few, try seeing if there are duplicate or close colors, and take your favorite. It's easy to do when you donate them, because you know someone else will enjoy them down the road.

Oh I have a huge number of scarves. I don't think the number you have seems unreasonable at all. Still, I too have been purging lately. There are colors that I used to be able to wear near my face that don't seem so great anymore so I got rid of those--also anything that I could no longer imagine reaching for simply because I have others that I like better. My scarf drawer is still pretty full and I plan to make another pass at it.

Another vote for separating seasonally. I don't worry about the amount of scarves I have, they're fairly easy to store, cheapish to buy and easily change up a simple outfit to a stylish one. You can never have too many scarves........... Or shoes, or bags............. Xx

I will do that Angie ! Thank you :-)
Jen yours look great! Maybe I should keep out only those that fit in a certain space and put the rest in drawers ..seperated by season as Angie said.
Suz- I will need them with my new short hair, right? ;-)
Rachylou - right! It is so hard! I found myself looking at those JCrew clearance items online today and there is the prettiest light blue scarf....hmmm...
Retail girl- my oldest scarf is from 1985. I still love it !
Carter! Woo hoo! Bottoms are almost done and then I am on to the same catagories as you.
Thistle - they are easily storable. So hard to let go of too....

Commiserating here.

My eyes are bigger than my stomach, as they say, re: scarves. Some are quite versatike and should be my mainstays for a more minimalist approach, but I aldo love nuances of color and pattern and pairing that up with outfits- you know, a springy color in a warm fabric to brighten late winter, or fall colors to transition summer weight tops into autumn. Plus, I really should not have ANY summer scarves, but I'm a sucker for a few of those, too.

I love scarves and probably have more than you do. I sort them by season...some are year round. Then, I sort by those that go with navy, and those that go with black...my two base neutrals. The navies go in one drawer, the black in another. But I sometimes I put those that don't get a lot of wear in a box in my closet. I never purge a scarf ! I have some that are 35 years old! Most are 36" silk squares.

Scarves are very hard for me . I love fabric !!! They all fit me ;-)

Not successful . Only got rid of three

Is this an unreasonable amount of scarves to own ? Particularly since I wouldn't think twice about adding to my collection

1) the three (!) I am letting go off
2) keeps

Next skirts I think .
P.s I love how they look folded and I am sure it is better for them but I know mysel and I will never put them back so .. Back to the scarf hangers they will go

P.p.s. Neckerchiefs have become part of my summer uniform . They are so useful ! Keep sun off my chest where I tend to get burned . Useful for bug protection if I am in the woods . I can get them wet and use them to keep cool. And I think they look good .
Love them !
