@Leigh Anne- long narrow ones tied round hat or hair or as a belt, little ones tied to bag handle or wrist, big thin triangles or square folded as triangle as a hip scarf.

Thanks Leigh Anne - I rarely wear scarves in summer except for a small silk one occasionally. A large light one can be used to shield shoulders from the sun- that can look good.

I don’t do the inverted triangle - it doesn’t feel right on me either.

I love scarves too, and have probably 50 or more ranging from light and airy cotton, to vibrant silks. I love to add them to an outfit as a finishing touch. I have found several books over the years on how to tie scarves - I would suggest looking on Amazon for one.
I often have trouble deciding how to wear a scarf in the summer though. It is too hot to have one around your neck (I live in Houston), and the inverted triangle hanging in the front sometimes makes me feel that I am adding bulk to my bust area. Anyone have additional ides on ways to wear scarves in summer?

The Cat - you have picked the most flattering ones - you have a real eye for colour. The lower one in two is quite old and I don't have the right outfit to wear it with right now. I hold on to it though in hope!!

I can imagine your four favourites on you - the one made by your Mum is particularly special and absolutely the right colour for you.

Sal, I bet that the lower one in #1, the upper one in #2 and the lower one in #6 look especially lovely with your colouring.

I own lots of scarves and shawls in various colours, patterns and materials. And I WEAR THEM! Well, in the warmest weeks of summer, I might not wear them so much, but most of the year I am rarely without a scarf or shawl at least part of the day. They add warmth, comfort, texture, colour, interest and variety to my outfits.

I edit my wardrobe each season, and if some scarves/shawls get worn out, or if I have lost my fascination for some, these will be purged. And those that don't look or feel suitable for the new season (like breezy pastel ones in fall/winter and dark velvet ones in spring/summer) will be stored for other seasons.

It would be very hard for me to choose just three, so I will make it four (all in some of my signature colours):
● Oblong silk scarf in cobalt blue with white polkadots
● Oblong silk scarf in a fantasy pattern of grey shades
● Large gauzy, wrinkly white scarf which, in summer, also serves as a shawl
● Soft blue baby-wool crochet shawl which, in winter, will also serve as an outdoor scarf. Handmade by my mother and shown here: https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....rom-mum-87

Rebekah - I like a patterned scarf too and they do provide such a fun addition in the gloomy months.

Thanks Minaminu - I will check that out. I can do with help as I can feel a bit messy sometimes in a scarf.

Barbara Diane - I agree that keeping scarves is usually a good idea. I can remember one I passed on a couple of years ago that I miss. I have a couple that I really like but don't have the right tops to wear them with. Their time will come!!

I have a lot of scarves. This last winter I surprised myself and hardly wore any. The previous winters I wore one every day.
Most of my Spring/Summer scarves I don’t wear very often because they are patterned and my tops are also patterned and they don’t work well together.
But, like jewelry, I find that a scarf can go unworn for years and then be the perfect piece to complete an outfit. So I keep them.

Scarfs are one of my fav accessories, and I wear them maybe 3/4 of the time...I have never counted!....I would estimate at over 50 easily?

I love a scarf as a 3rd piece, to keep warm in the winter and in indoor fluctuating temp... I like a lightweight linen, cotton or viscose for summer to keep heat off my shoulders when traveling.

many of my scarfs are colorful, as I often wear dark or black clothing and it adds a nice bit of color next to my skin. Many are all shades of blue! Most are patterned or textured to add another element to an outfit.

I might be inspired to count and photograph them....hmmm.... it would be a good rainy day quarantine project!

This photo proves that I may have a bit of a scarf obsession After a recent cull, I have 28 in total (#4 is not pictured but it's actually the deep maroon pashmina that I hang on the back of my office chair for warmth in the A/C - hopefully I will be reunited with it soon!)

My last 8 scarves are the lightweight ones I wear to bed & WFH (some of you may be familiar with my 4-piece pyjamas uniform - the scarf acts as a blindfold to help me fall asleep against the light pollution of HK's typically bright nights).

I generally favour long, rectangular scarves & a few big square ones (the most versatile shapes to wear as headscarves too). I have one very small, square neckerchief but it's usually worn wrapped around a bag handle than as a neck accessory (I find that the tiny size often looks disproportionate to my bust, making it seem even larger). I therefore prefer something I can wrap around me (in both summer & winter).

I'm currently working on transitioning to more natural fibres & warmer colours in my scarves, since many of these scarves came with me from the UK but aren't comfortable to wear in the sweltering Hong Kong heat. I like buying scarves as souvenirs when I travel, because they're lightweight enough to not take up much luggage space.

#18 was actually a silk scarf I bought whilst in Australia (which kickstarted my natural fibres revelation) - if I had to choose only 3 scarves *gulp* it would probably be that one, my #8 patterned blanket scarf (great for travel) & my #27 lightweight yellow one. But the reality is that you'll probably have to pry the remaining 25 scarves from my cold, dead hands anyway @Sal

Unfrumped - I think wearing lightweight scarves inside is a good idea for warmth - I do it all the time. And I agree patterned scarves in your best colours are the easiest to wear.

Suz - what a lovely collection. You indeed suit scarves very well and I imagine they would be super useful in the Pacific NW. I love the pattern on the blue H&M scarf!! I hope that you get to low enough cases of Covid that masks are not needed too.

Shevia - scarves are so easy to store and rarely date, so I think well worth hanging on to. I love my inherited scarves. I have worn a handful out, and one or two I have passed on as I did not like the colour or shape on me. But in general if I like them - I will keep until the mood strikes to wear it again. I have two in my collection that I love but have not worn for over five years.

Rachy - I wonder what it is about your go to scarf that makes it work for you. Probably a mix of colour, pattern and shape.

Slimcat - yes scarves work so well in cool breezy places I think - Seattle more than California. Although useful if you travel in the future. I could definitely halve my collection and not really notice a difference. I do have one I am going to pass on, and two that show wear that I am looking for replacements for. The rest will stay even if I rarely wear them!!

Minaminu - I would be interested and might start a thread about how people tie/wear them later (although I could be out of season given it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere.

Thanks Madeline and Vildy.

Bijou - what a gorgeous colourful collection!! Just stunning.

Roberta - I think we use scarves for the same reason. Large ones and a bust can be a bit tricky....and don't worry I don't intend to make you go to three (I would struggle too - I could probably choose 6 easily but not 3)

Angie - I always love the J Crew floral one of yours. Gorgeous. Yes you suit scarves so well but I see why you are happy with a small tight collection. And since they suit you, wearing them in summer for shade is a great idea.

SarahD8 - I won't make you cull!! I am pleased you have a collection that you love.

LisaP - I might check that out. I sometimes love a small tidy neck scarf on me but I sometimes look at it and take it off immediately. A great way of subtle interest to a plain top and can be very flattering when you get it right.

whidbeygirl - thanks for joining in and welcome to the forum. Why don't you keep wearing them at home? I can see that some do feel overdressed but casual ones can add a bit of interest. I have been known to add a big scarf over a workout tee and leggings for a Zoom meeting (shhhh - don't tell anyone!)

I love scarves! I probably have a couple dozen. Just realized the other day that I miss wearing them during this lockdown time. I don’t go out that much where I would wear one...and for my very casual zoom gatherings they seem a bit over dressed. Of course, now that it’s summer fewer scarves are weather appropriate when I do have a reason to go out again. Lisap: tried to go to redleopard.uk...but it couldn’t be found...did I get the URL wrong?

Love seeing all the scarf collections! Thanks for sharing.

Speaking of scarves, my new favourite people over at redleopard.uk wear scarves with every outfit , and show ways to wear them to add presence and authority to your look.....something I'd to copy. One of the women wears her scarves (with her short hair) inside her shirt collars and right up against her jawline .It looks fantastic in pictures and in videos (which is something they talk about a lot too) . I have a friend who dresses like this - always with a scarf tied right around her neck and covering all of her neck- again such a sophisticated look.My only worry is directing attention to wrinkles and loose skin on my neck...and accenting a softer jaw line. I'd still like to experiment with this.

Unlike Angie, I DO want a large scarf collection! I have about 50 scarves (! - makes up for having, like, 2 handbags and a pretty minimal coat capsule).

My collection is about equally split between small silk scarves and what I call "outerwear" scarves. I divide them into different seasons depending on the print/palette.

I haven't been wearing my silk scarves much the last year or two and am not currently adding to that collection but I don't feel a need to cull.

I could not choose just 3!

In fact in my recent holding zone review the only item I brought back into my active closet was a scarf - a sentimental gift from my bestie more than 20 years ago. (See pic) Originally I wore it in winter but the chiffon material started to feel wrong for the season especially with my gear-like coat. I'm really into summer boho black right now, so I thought I'd see if I could incorporate it into some outfits in the months ahead.

Fun to see YLF's scarf collections!

To answer your questions Sal, I am similar to Suz. I'm outside on foot all the time (urban walking life), live in a rainy and cold city, and MUST have neck insulation! I wear scarves 6 months of the year for warmth.

My long neck, regular size bust, and short hair are well suited to big scarves. I wear them with ease very comfortably.

That said, I don't want a large scarf collection. I have edited a lot out, and am down to a very specific chunky yet dressy scarf look. All my scarves are woolly accept for a few linen ones for late Spring and the beach (the two Finds at the end).

I have lost count of my scarves - I think around 40? Obvs a silly amount. I distinctly remember having one GREAT scarf that was a gift from my world traveler SIL, who bought it in Turkey. That was 20 years ago. I wore it every cold day. So in theory i coild go back to a very few, but don't make me pick!

I think the shape question is particularly interesting. 99% of my scarves are rectangular. I like the idea of a big square but the knot always seems to rest on my ample chest. That is why i have never splashed out on a Hermes scarf, as much as i admire them.

Mine also tend to be really colorful or have a bold pattern. That's because I only wear them in the winter, when my wardrobe is much darker in general. Big florals, geometric, animal print. I have recently admired scarves with maps on them. A friend has one with a map of Middle-Earth that I covet.

I don't see a problem combining them with a mask when it cools off. I liked my mask in March when it kept my face warmer.

Love seeing everyone’s scarf collection.
I am almost embarrassed to say I have about 30 scarves (maybe more).
When I was working I wore one almost daily. Now, not so often.

Well I have gone through my scarf collection and I have 22 scarves. I tend to add one or two scarves to my collection each year. Some I wear often, others not so much, but they sort of come in and out of favour.

Favourite summer scarves are all silk square scarves that I tie around my neck or handbag.

Favourite winter scarve woollen and faux fur. The most recent acquisition is the pink hearts scarf, its modal and cashmere mix. I bought this to wear with my black jackets.

What comes through from my current favourite scarves is that they are colourful. My older scarves are quite subdued, so I have been deliberate in adding in more colourful scarves to my collection.

CARLA, I am mesmerized by the last scarf on the right. I don't think I've ever seen anything like this. Do you know what city it's supposed to be? Do you know what brand it is?

My own scarves are more in a class with Shevia's - mostly for
inspiration. Though the winter ones can be worn for necessity and
cheer against the dreary days.

I have a few in silk, wool and modal. I think I'll need to add some to the holding zone as I haven't used them for a while, at least 2 of them, partly due to the masks but also because i fear the pattern and colour are no longer me, it will need to be assessed at the beginning of fall.

Most of them are big (140x140 cm or 45x190 cm) as I like to wrap them around the neck or shoulders as I always feel a little bit cold! I have a huge red modal scarf dedicated to airplane travels, it can be a pillow or a soft blanket, this is a keeper! The next keeper would be a vintage white wool scarf, but it mainly for sentimental reasons. Finally, I'd keep a silk Scarf which has a beautiful range of colours and it's a great inspiration.

I am still trying to learn what works for me and am keen to try different sizes as I really liked how some fabbers styled it is either hair or bag accessories! For this, I will need to them try and will have a look once the shoos have opened!

I used to have pretty big collection of scarfs back in Seattle - I was always feeling cold/chilly around the neck. Silk, cotton, modal, wool - all kinds. In sunny CA I don't need scarfs as much and usually stick to 3-4 favorites. It's mostly cotton or cotton-modal scarfs with super soft/smooth feel of the fabric I favor now. My warmer scarfs in wool or wool/cashmere are rarely coming out - my sensitivity of the skin is quite high.
I like rectangular scarfs that I can wear different ways ( not too wide or bulky kind ). The favorite ones have some light blue/green/aqua color in it and some interesting print all over:
1. BR wool/cotton scarf in soft black with turquoise/blue print
2. GAP big cotton-modal scarf with green&magenta plaid print over white
3. ECHO small rectangular silk scarf with blue and lavender
Last year I got one new scarf for myself and three that I bought as presents.

I just came back because...the mask question. It's a good one. I don't know, in short. In my neck of the woods, we do not need to wear masks as a regular thing outdoors.

I do, however, wear them in shops.

I don't know how long that will go on, but I suspect I will wear more plain scarves if I am wearing a patterned mask...and vice versa.

But secretly, I am hoping we get to NZ status instead!!

I got rid of a lot of silk and pashmina scarves. I don’t really wear them... but I do wear/use kerchiefs. I have a little collection. I have one large silk square, black with falcons; it’s the scarf I always turn to, always does what I need it to do. Then there are some winter scarves. I like them large/long or furry, lol.

I have dozens of thrifted scarves. Most are silk, sizes are various and I wear them rarely. But I do get color inspiration from them and enjoy looking at them. One day I will wear them more. Or happily pass them on to my kids, or grand-nieces/nephews or someone. No regrets, no pictures .

Sally, what great questions!!! It seems as if you know your own scarf style well and understand what makes them work for you (or not).

As a long-neck, short-hair, small bust person who lives (or at least, lived) in a frigid climate, scarves were my absolute favourite accessory for years and I still have a lot of them and use them frequently. I often like a plain top with a scarf to add interest. Or a pattern mix -- striped top with patterned scarf. A top entirely in pattern feels like "too much going on" for me, as a rule. Yet plain plain plain bores me -- I need some dynamism in the look. Scarves have rescued many a boring Suz outfit.

I have so many. Let's just start with the spring/ summer ones -- current season. I have 6. (First Finds). These are lightweight enough to wear in AC on hot days or on cool mornings/ evenings. Of course, I rarely wear them in high summer.

Fall-winter -- I have 6 more! One (grey and navy) is not pictured. These are heavier -- silk or wool or a blend that is warmer. There is some crossover, particularly with the blue H&M and the blue silk.

I also have outerwear scarves -- items worn exclusively with winter coats. The last two Finds are examples.

If I could pick only 3, I'd be in a serious pickle. I guess I'd have to take one from each category -- so I'd take the bultterfly scarf for summer (1), the Hinge butterfly silk scarf for FW, and the BP fringe infinity for wearing with coats.
