Mander, I had a melanoma (looked like a mole) removed from the top of my foot in 1993, and have had follow-up skin checks since then. I've been fine and life is good!

Yeah, don't read the medical reports ... especially the news ones. We usually never read them, or do so we can say how terrible the reports are for being biased or manipulating findings for good news stories.

Don't worry

What Ornella said. Please stop reading and self diagnosing. It's so the wrong thing to do. One day at a time and hang in there. We are here to support you every step of the way. xo

I'm hoping for the best for you. And however hard it is to stay away from them, please don't read too many articles about what scares you - wait until you see the doctor to know exactly what is going on.

Thanks, all, I feel better this morning. Several people on both sides of my family have had small cancers removed, and if I recall correctly, my great-grandmother actually died from skin cancer (although to be fair she was quite elderly at the time she died, in the late 60s, and was one of those down-home farm types who "didn't trust no city doctors" and didn't seek treatment for years and years).

I do have a lot of risk factors (fair skin, many moles and freckles, history of major sunburns plus working outdoors, living at high altitude, family history) so I've thought for a long time that I would eventually develop some sort of skin cancer. I had never realized that some melanomas can grow super fast until I read a report on a medical study last night that contained the phrase "fast growing melanomas can potentially kill within weeks"! So, naturally I freaked out a little bit, because this spot seems to have quite suddenly changed from an ordinary mole to a rather nasty looking spot.

I know that it is more likely to be something treatable. I'll still be nervous until I can get someone to look at it, though!

Don't panic before the time to panic comes -or just doesn't. Easier said than done, I know, but try to do that. Panicking won't get you anywehere.

I hope it will be nothing, and I find the previous posts quite reassuring

You poor thing! A couple of years ago I went for a skin check and my Dr said after looking at a particular mole "This has to come out immediately, it looks like a melanoma!"

I absolutely freaked out and the wait was torturous for test results. It turned out that it wasn't. I was so cranky at the Dr, but grateful that her blunt assessment it gave me an opportunity to reassess what was important in life.

You are doing the right thing getting the lesion looked at as soon as you possibly can.

I know melanoma is scary, but living in the skin-cancer capital of the world, I can tell you honestly that I have friends who have had melanomas removed and are still around happy and healthy many years later.

Do update when you've seen the Dr. In the meantime, just remember from my experience - just because it looks scary, it doesn't necessarily mean it is.

I don't think I've ever seen a melanoma that suddenly changed and killed someone within weeks. I wouldn't worry too much about it, and get into see a doc/derm as soon as you can.

A few years ago I had about four suspicious moles removed. One came back irregular and had to be excised deeper, it turned out to be fine. Although now I have large scar on my back because I got um, a bit creative during the healing process.

Good you have made an appointment. Most likely it will be something else, not melanoma, but better not to wait or take chances. I found, in my forties, that middle age hormones caused strange skin things to happen -- spots changing, things growing, etc. All turned out okay, but I'm so glad you'll get checked out.

A friend of mine did have a spot of melanoma removed and they got it early enough to not have any followup treatment. Just annual body checks, I guess. So, even if it is something, it doesn't automatically mean the worst.

Hope the days pass quickly between now and the appointment

Try not to worry. I had a similar thing a few years ago. I had it removed and tested and it was basal cell carcinoma. I believe this is far more common than melanoma and it doesn't spread so once removed, is no threat.

Good luck.

Sorry you're dealing with so much anxiety. But I also have never heard of melanoma killing a relatively healthy person within weeks. In any case, there is no point in jumping to conclusions before you see your doctor. Sending you warm thoughts.

Get in as soon as you can, but try not to worry. I had one once that changed(majorly) and it turned out to be nothing. My mum had a really weird looking one that turned out to be a skin yeast infection on her back!

You know I had a mole on my back that always bothered me too. It would hurt when the water hit it in the shower. One day DH said he thought it looked different, which kicked my butt into gear to go get it checked. It turned out to be completely benign. I'm not saying not to worry, you definitely need to get it checked, but the truth is, even ones at change and do funky stuff are most often benign. My dad has even had some skin cancer removed from his face, and I am super pale with freckles, so both huge strikes against me, but nope, it was all fine! I will keep my fingers crossed for you that you can get in earlier and it's nothing bad!

I've had an itchy mole on my back for months, but every time DH looked at it it just seemed like more of the same keratosis (?) pilaris, like little ingrown hairs, that I have all over. Last night, however, he noticed that is has become very dark and scaly, and it is sticking up from the surrounding skin. Now I am prone to hypochondria, but it very much looks like one of those scary photos. To make matters worse, I read that such cancers can kill within weeks. And the earliest I can see the doctor is Wednesday.

Argh! Not much I can do right now, but it's still scary!
