Great post! Interesting to learn about what you thought you'd wear a lot vs. what you did wear a lot. Glad what you brought covered all temps and situations. Nothing is worse than being miserably cold or hot or in terrible pain.

Thanks for sharing! Love reading about your packing experience. You did a great job! Packing for Scandinavia is tricky with four seasons in a day. Not unusual at all.

Your street style summary is great! It's always fun to see things from another perspective. Very insightful. :-)

What an interesting post! I loved hearing about what did and didn't get worn. Sounds like your travel clothes were very well chosen. Of course, there is always something that sits in the suitcase for the entire trip (happens to me on every trip ) but you can't foresee everything.

Thanks also for the style report. It's always fascinating to see what trends people are wearing in other countries. The white sneakers seem to be everywhere.

Loved this report. Interesting how the way people dress changes from place to place. Do you feel that the use of light muted tones has to do with people's coloring? I find that that is what happens in Portugal, people dress in bright colors because they have vivid coloring .
Also, regarding packing, I am glad you felt you had options.

Fabulous report! I am glad those Ecco sneakers worked out for you as I am planning to take mine on a trip quite soon! It sounds as if you were really well prepared. It's always the case that at least one item isn't worn as much as the others, and as you say, you can seldom predict what it will be.

I'm a huge fan of planning for uncertain weather. And for happy feet!

Glad you had a good trip and your packing served you well.
I would have debated the soft-shell jacket, too, given they can be bulky, so it was good that it got plenty of wear.
I wonder if we'll see the dress and sneakers look come to the fore in the Australian summer?

I had noticed the white, white sneakers on my young friends from Berlin last year, but not so much in Paris or New York.

I am back home from my trip to Scandinavia (Sweden, Norway and Denmark). I am grateful to those of you who had generously contributed answers to my packing dilemmas before the trip. So in the spirit of giving back - here is my summary on the packing scores and mistakes, as well as some remarks on the street style I saw.

PACKING
Most of it is good - I had pretty much packed the right things, with perhaps a few tweaks to be had, but nothing major (phew). Following some excellent tips on this forum, I did end up taking a large variety of items.
A. Weather
So first of all: YES you do have to dress for 4 seasons, sometimes literally in one day. Just as I'd think that I shouldn't have brought a particular item as it's too cold/warm for it, the very next day would prove me wrong and I'd wear the item in question. Moral: pack a great variety of items for all sorts of weather!

It really felt warmer (in the cities) than the temperature would suggest - so if it was 22 degrees or above, I was in sandals with either cropped pants or skirt/dress, or sometimes a dress with my white sneakers, a combo which really felt right (see below). What exacerbated this was that most museums don't seem to have any air-conditioning, so it was incredibly hot inside buildings - and as a result once you got back on the street, you took a while to cool down. As a result - I did feel quite warm a lot of the time.

However, in Norway we encountered really cold weather on some days, where I had to wear a long trousers with a shirt+light sports jacket + softshell jacket with hood all at once.

B. What I packed and comments

City Sightseeing

1 pair long trousers

1 pair long jeggings

(Comment: could have done with just one of these - however when it was cold it was usually wet at the same time, so was glad to have a back-up)

2 cropped trousers

(Comment: could have done with 1 but it was nice to have variety)

1 knee-length tube skirt

1 casual dress

(Comment: thought I was packing these two "just in case" but they got heaps of wear!)

11 short-sleeve T-shirts

(Comment: had to have lots as we were changing accommodation about every 2 days, sometimes daily, so washing was too difficult except for a few places. Perhaps should have packed 1 more to go with the skirt, which I hadn't expected to wear as much. The only shirt that came back unworn was one made of polyester - it's actually quite a favourite one, but the fibre just seemed all wrong on a holiday).

4 cardigans

(Comment: I am a cardigan sort of person. 3 got heaps of wear, one didn't - interestingly it was the oldest one that I though was "tried and true" but in fact I felt quite tired of it and it didn't make me feel stylish. Each goes with a different combo and all were quite light. One was a long cardigan that I love but thought impractical for travel and a bit of an indulgence to bring... and it possibly got the most wear)

Light pocketable rain jacket

(Comment: Bought this at Uniqlo just for the trip - loved that it was longer, sort of mid-thigh if not longer, and could be worn over everything else, including the softshell jacket. It was worn heaps and carried around in a backpack even more: a perfect travel item in summary)

3 light scarves

(I am a scarf kind of person and the mild days in Scandinavia were made for these - I basically wore one every day. As usual, I wore one more than the others because it was the most practical, being soft but not prone to wrinkling. Another was a disappointment as it wrinkles and there were no ironing facilities in the rooms, and in any case I would have hardly bothered. )

1 pair Ecco walking sandals

(Comment: worn a lot more than I'd have thought - I would have ended up very, very unhappy had I not packed them as my feet swell from walking around on a warm day)

1 pair Ecco white leather sneakers

(Comment: possibly the most worn item of the trip)

1 pair plain black Adidas runners

(Comment: I packed these as I still felt that the Ecco sneakers were untested when I came to 14-hour walking sprees, but hardly wore them as the Eccos totally proved themselves and looked a whole lot more stylish and current)

Gear for Norway

1 light sports jacket which can be worn as the bottom layer

1 warm softshell jacket with hood

(Comment: really debated over this one, as it takes up quite a bit of space. In the end was incredibly glad I had it as I wore it almost every day in Norway)

Hiking boots

(Comment: for a whole lot of unforeseen reasons we ended up doing a less hiking than we'd thought. So I could have done without them... but who knew?)

Leggings and hiking shorts

STREET STYLE
Most of this is based on Sweden - where we'd spent the most time. Plus - the fjords in Norway were all about gear, and Copenhagen was too eclectic and too full of visitors to really pick a style. Before I say anything about Swedish style, I should start by remarking that there were so many model-like physiques (height, figure) that any old sack would have looked good on most of them. But:...
1. Absence of brand consciousness: hardly saw anything with a label until I got on the plane back home and was reminded that, ah yes, people do carry labelled handbags and wear labelled sneakers. I suppose this is the essence of why Swedish style is often called "effortless style".
2. Loads of white leather sneakers everywhere - but plain white, not Stan Smiths or anything. Especially with dresses - in fact I hardly saw a dress that wasn't worn with sneaks - and then it was worn with Birkenstocks (of the Gizeh variety)
3. Light muted colours: light blues, whites and greys everywhere. If I was to pick one outfit that really was everywhere on the streets, it was light blue jeans, striped T-shirt (navy and white), white sneakers and light grey or light beige cardigan or jacket
4. A few striking exceptions were stylish women with very blonde hair dressed in summery head-to-toe black - which of course looked amazing
5. Flat shoes everywhere, as were looser fits, little obvious make-up - in short, practical and comfortable, the very opposite of the "Look at me" style
6. Sports-type clothing everywhere, and no, not just on tourists: sneakers reigned, lots of sports jackets - though not the whole head-to-toe "I'm on my way to the gym" look, the sneakers were usually worn with jeans or dresses.
7. And yes, there was an H&M on every corner ;)

Thank you for bearing with me as this ended up a super long post! Please feel free to contribute or contradict if your experiences of Scandinavia were different...
