With my mostly casual, moderate wardrobe I have only one silk top and 2 knit-tanks in this category. I am keeping the tanks for their versatility, and the top because I like the print

I rarely wear blazers, but I have a handful and a small pool of tanks and shells that I only wear with them. The tops aren't all substantial enough to wear on their own, but often still have some exciting details or colors to bring to dressier looks. I wish I had more options, but I only need about 4-5 looks that I can repeat at various times of the year, so these pieces form their own mini-capsule and tend to hide in my closet for those occasions.

I usually wear a graphic tee under my blazers so I'm not sure my input will be very useful... but when I wear a different kind of top, it has to be something that I will be okay with when the jacket comes off. I have internal temperature fluctuations fairly often so if I'm wearing a jacket, it will go on and off several times throughout the day and the top has to make the cut on it's own as well. I think it also will depend on how often you think you may find yourself needing to wear a jacket.

I have those kinds of tops as well, and they are going unworn now that I don't wear blazers. I don't like sleeves under dressy jackets, so I always keep them just in case.

I have tops that I only wear with a topper and I don't have an issue with that at all. I actually purchased several just for that purpose.

Of the ones shown in my finds, I wear just the floral one on its own.

When I worked in an environment where blazers and suits were the norm, yes I had a completely different set of tops to wear with them. So did the other women I worked with. None of us saw this as a problem - just part of the required business uniform, like ties for men.
I still own a couple of basic shells, since I do will occasionally wear jackets.
What particularly is bothering you about this situation?

I have a couple of really nice printed or patterned tanks that I love, but they look better under jackets than they do alone. This is mainly an issue of hem length, as they are long enough that they end at my widest part and are not the most flattering, yet they don't work well in a semi-tuck for one reason or another. So they only get worn when I can wear them with a jacket or blazer, which renders them non-summer items, which can be really frustrating. They only get worn during our rather short spring and fall seasons because sleeveless under a jacket is not enough warmth for our winters.

I just live with it, knowing that tops like that have limited use for me, so in the future, I can make sure to buy ones that also work without jackets, that work on me semi-tuck or untucked. But I won't get rid of the ones I have, since I like them under those jacketed conditions.

Unfrumped - I am a total blazer and long jacket girl. In the90's jackets were cut roomier in the sleeves, with lower armholes and a tad more room in the back and body. It allowed you to "get away" with slightly more fluid fit underlayers. Most blazers today have narrow sleeves with higher armholes - they absolutely do not look good with fluid knits. I am very picky about underlayers. I had a major love affair with JCrew's jackie cotton shell since it's substantial, simple and elegant and looks good with or without the jacket. Also I will never part with the JCrew ruffled tanks which look like little tuxedo tops and work with everything. Otherwise I have a terrible time finding tops that work. Although one trick I've been sucessful with that you might consider is a very fine cropped top. The EF silk button back shell is very elegant but it must high the underlayer perfectly. Same with a cropped very thin sweater. Lastly, fine knits with a split hem allow you to semi- tuck the front (assuming they are not too long for your jacket in back). Anyway, those are some of my tricks. Hope that resonates!!

I think most of us do this. We have a few tops that can be worn only under jackets and not on their own. I don't see a problem with this....especially if you do wear jackets/Blazers often.

The problem comes when you still have these tops and do not wear blazers/cardigans/toppers at all. I've seen a lot of people layer a fitted simple white or black tee under their tanks to make it more wearable in a casual setting when a third piece is unnecessary. I've tried that myself and it seems to work fine actually.

Like Lisap, I usually wear sleeveless tops under jackets, with the exception of denim jackets. I do however, have layering tops of different fits. If there is room in your closet, and you haven't diffused your wardrobe so much that you have style confusion when you get dressed every day, I don't see that as a problem. I'm hard on my clothes, so I fear paring down so much that I wear out first layers pretty quickly.

Of course, I was just switching over my closet, and I realize I have lots of 7s and 8s that have only about 20% of their wear life left. Hmmmmm....

I have become so accustomed to wearing only sleeveless tops under a jacket that I'm not sure I can go back to anything else! I know what you mean though about ending up with certain tops that serve no other function that to be worn under a jacket, and I am not really keen on buying them that way. Sometimes it happens (usually some print or something with embellishment that you can't resist to have peaking out from under a jacket) , but I try to make sure that they look good enough to be worn on their own . For that reason, I stick to racerback tank style tops in silk or poly, or sleeveless tanks with high-low hem or swing back cuts that add the interest necessary to make them fun to wear by themselves. And keep up with the bicep curls and tricep dips If I'm somewhere where it doesn't feel quite right to be completely sleeveless, but I'm really hot or annoyed with my jacket, I have been known to drape the jacket over my shoulders - which may or may not look precious, but it keeps one a little cooler

I agree completely! I've ranted on this Before but if I actually wore jackets all day, I might well use more sleeveless tops and keep jacket on as needing it for A/ C anyway.

There's a raging battle in the comments section of Ask a Manager today about the suitability of sleeveless tops and dresses in business environments - which does remind me that sleeveless tops are so much easier to wear under blazers, or at least they are for me. So that might be one of the reasons why manufacturers keep making sleeveless tops and dresses, even for winter (that and sleeves take more fabric and are hard to get right for a wide variety of figure types).

I'm finding I'm in a similar situation in regard to tops with blazers as well. I have some sleeveless tops that I only wear with blazers. I don't wear them with anything else and I don't like to wear sleeveless tops on their own. I've been doing a wardrobe assessment and deciding what to donate and keep. I do have some blazers that I would wear more of if I had tops that worked well with the blazer - and it's a wardrobe hole that I've been trying to fill. My first choice are tops that I'll wear on their own, like short sleeve crew necks, just so I have more adaptability. But will keep at least some of the sleeveless tops I have just to wear with the blazers if they work well.

Laura, I hear that!
I am going to try to relax but use good criteria- does it FIT. and GO in an outfit for a specific"10" look, and in good condition( these items may pill) and if possible , weed out dupes( will I always choose THIS one over that) and then if they're in the off- season closet , it's just like special occasion wear or trip gear.

I can also try to increase use of these fits under more fluid cardigans in cool weather.

I definitely have this issue as far as sizing, and it's one of the things that makes the current trend of fluid fit challenging - tops often look best if worn alone when they're a little bit looser than would be ideal for wearing underneath something else, and I see what you're saying about details and seaming as well. This is one of my personal issues with really small capsule wardrobes - things aren't as mix-and-match as people like to say they are, or maybe I'm just a perfectionist.

When Jenn was talking about the layering difficulties with temperature variations recently, this was part of her problem, and mine. In practice, I don't keep two sets of tops, although each one seems to gravitate to being worn one way or the other more often rather than half and half. So I guess I don't buy with this in mind as much as it just ends up happening? I got around this a bit in recent years by buying mostly knit and ponte jackets, so I don't have to worry about shoulder fit and needed ease/roominess quite as much. But I don't have to wear business formal for work, or hardly ever, so I have more flexibility on that point than others.

I don't know if that's helpful at all for you - I'd say that if you have the tops now that work for particular situations, I wouldn't get rid of them just because it feels like you have too many. If you wear them all at some point, for some particular occasion or combination of needs, they're not excessive.

While going through what can stay or go from closet, I am reviewing my tops and find I hold onto several dressy T's and simikar flat knit tops like rayon I have some that tuck and drape the way I like for wearing as- is, and they do fit under jsckets, but even that little extra fabric may tend to bunch under a jacket , maybe not lying as smoothly across the chest or getting dragged at the neckline. The tops that are a tad closer fitting look better under the Blazers but aren't my faves anymore for fluid fit. They would not be unseemly if jacket came off, though.
When I found myself being sure to have some " interview" or " presentation" outfits at the ready, I feel I may need to keep some of these tops even thought I wish I could pare down more.

I do think I can go through " capsules" and reduce further to just a few best, but using Mo's famous system, or someone, it might still be, warm weather dark neutral, , light, color; cold weather dark, light, etc.
it's partly because the " sharper" outfits have more precisely fitting jackets at shouldef and armhole- sleeve and so don't tolerate as much bunching, and yet I don't want tight thin tops, so there's a fine line.
A similar example is saving some sleeveless shells, even though I don't do sleeveless, because for some jacket looks I would never take off the jacket.
I guess this sounds picky, but my examples are for oufits you'd like to be close to " 10" and yet may need several due to what works best in different season and occasion.
Do you have a lot of tops just for jackets or shop very carefully for the HEWI that works both ways?
