I have begun to actually purchase loungewear that's designed for that purpose. Like right now I'm wearing cute flannel PJ bottoms and matching knit top. It's an actual outfit that was designed for lounging and sleeping. It's, like, awesome. Who knew? LOL

I dont really do that, cuz if I go out, I dont want to bother to change clothes and it depresses me to wear 'grungy' clothing around the house.....

Good call, Mo. As someone who just spent a week purging her entire house, I can vouch for the fact that it feels great when you're done. Let us know!

Velma, thanks for sharing. I am feeling exactly what you expressed. I am at home a LOT while I"m here in FL not working, and I want to be comfortable but not feel dragged down mentally by wearing bad clothes. I like the idea of comparing would be keepers to what is already in the lounging rotation, and not keeping anything that isn't at least up to par, if not better. Thanks for crystalizing my thoughts into words for me And now I'm off to sadly bid adieu to a few skirts that have seen better days . . .

I work from home, and it is really important to me to look a cut above grungy, even if I am not going anywhere!

I do keep around an old pair of jeans, a college sweatshirt, and a couple of ratty t-shirts for yardwork and painting. Whenever I put similar items into my "donate" pile, I confirm that they are not an improvement over the current yard clothes before I toss them.

I often dress very casually--jeans, a sweater or hoody, and boots, say--when I have no plans to leave the house, but I don't wear unflattering castoffs. For my true loungewear (pajamas or the equivalent, which I put on at some point in the evening), I wear decent-looking fleece items mostly, which I replace once in a while. (I just bought two new pairs of fleece pajama bottoms at Kohl's yesterday, and Old Navy often has decent pieces for a song.) I do reuse old tees and tanks for sleeping in the summer, but only if they still look okay.

Last year, I had a cashmere sweater that pilled horribly after just a few wearings (shaving and brushing did not salvage it--it was a disaster). I considered repurposing it for sleeping or loungewear--but you know, it looked awful, and it made me angry to see it. So I donated it. I like to be comfortable and relaxed when I am at my most casual--and I don't like to be wasteful! I am the original thrifter--but I am not willing to look ratty, especially since I spend so much time at home.

Mo, here's another idea. A lot of the items I've held onto for loungewear are sentimental: a sweater I knit, a sweatshirt from high school, sweatpants I picked up in South Africa, and lots of t-shirts from various things I've done. They make me happy, and aren't hideous, so I keep them. I feel better keeping these clothes past their prime because of the sentimental attachment. Anything that could become loungewear but doesn't have memories attached get donated instead.

I tend to not want to be wasteful and so I love to repurpose what I can in this world. But I'm starting to think - if something didn't look good enough for me to wear it out in the world, why do I want to see myself in it day after day in the house? I spend a LOT of time lately at home and wonder if mismatched and worn out or dated 'loungewear' is really more detrimental than helpful lol!

I don't have enough of a casual wardrobe for things to become lounging castoffs. I do buy items specifically for that purpose (i.e. polarfleece pants for scuffing around our cabin).

This weekend I just completely dumped a bunch of these kinds of clothes that I finally realized were too icky even for lounging. Usually I take them to our cabin where they languish out of sight. I've also started realizing that "more" is not synonymous with "better".

I also replaced a couple of pajama bottoms that were so awful even my husband commented on them.

Man, why did you have to go and make me face the truth of my own clothing purgatory? lol

I noticed the other day that I seem to have a LOT of loungewear -- way too much, considering the fact that I only wear these clothes a couple hours a day... and only switch to a new lounge outfit about once a week. A lot of it is just hoodies, crewnecks, and such that I used to wear in college but no longer flatter my body w/o a sports bra. I think I'm finally ready to let some of it go -- maybe the same will happen with you.

I do. I keep a couple of really unpresentable items for yardwork, painting, heavy cleaning, etc. Everything else is in decent shape, just REALLY casual. All of my sweatshirts and hoodies are loungewear only. I don't like wearing my nicer cardigans and jackets around the house because our cats (or more specifically, their claws) create problems, so I like having a selection of warm loungewear. I also have a couple of dresses that are far too short or too casual to wear anywhere, but are PERFECT for when it's 90+ degrees and I don't feel like showering and getting dressed yet, but would rather not walk around the house naked.

I would just keep the loungewear selection limited, and pay attention to what you actually wear and how often you wear it. You'll find a balance.

Someday I might shop specifically for loungewear. For now I have so much casual stuff left over from my high school and college years, plus a couple items that the cats have accidentally demolished, that it will probably be a while before I feel the need to actually buy new loungewear.

I have decided a handful of things are no longer suitable to wear out. I'm thinking of designating them to loungewear status. Some are warm but short, or pilled, sweaters. Some are loose, long, shapeless skirts. Wondering if I'm kidding myself and that this is just a stop on the way to being purged for good.

After being seen taking out the trash in a less than presentable shrunken tank, I'm mulling over how presentable I want/need my loungewear to be.

Do you all shop specifically for loungewear and/or clothes to do chores in? Or do you take cast offs and use them in this way?
