The fabric I'm looking at is cotton/lycra blend but I don't know the percentages. I haven't sewn sateen yet and since I can't see the fabric before hand to check the color (I really don't want super bright Halloween orange, more of a deeper orange) and the sheen, I think I'll skip that fabric and keep an eye out for something good at the local fabric store.

Like the others I can see potential for the dress if the quality of the fabric is up to par.

I love the idea of an orange shift, but I'm sort of with Maya on sateen- it can look pretty cheap, especially synthetic versions. Do you know the fibre content of the fabric you're after?

Also, have you sewn much with sateen before? It's one of my least favourite fabrics to work with. Fraying, puckered seams and press lines all over the place. Honestly, give me multi-layered chiffon over sateen anyday!

But if you do decide to go for it, I'm super excited to see how it turns out

I think it is fine, if you wear it with casual elements... like a denim jacket, casual sandals, etc. But I do think Maya makes a good point that the level of shininess probably matters most.

I really feel like I need to see sateen in person to make a judgment. I don't like it when it's TOO shiny. It looks cheap. But I love it when it's a more subtle sheen, and I think it works better for casual. I was just looking at a gorgeous sateen shirt dress on Esprit, so I think it can absolutely be casual...but it really has to hit the right note.

I saw an orange strapless sheath the other day at NY & Co the other day. It was too short, too $$ (especially for something I'd rarely get to wear) and strapless anything and two year olds are not a good mix (not to mention how lopsided my chest is). Oh, and it was a little too roomy in the hips. Anyway, that particular dress was in all ways unsuitable for me, except the color was fabulous and I kind of fell in love with the idea of an orange sheath. I ran across some orange sateen fabric online that's in clearance for $1 a yard. Shipping is a little high, but even so I'd only need 2 1/2 yards at the most for a sheath so it'd still be pretty cheap. But...... I rarely get the opportunity to get dressed up beyond smart casual and I'm afraid the sateen would just be too dressy, especially in such a sllek shape.

What do you girls think? Too dressy or okay?
