I heard from family that the south shore of LI got hit really hard, micheline. And then in the aftermath, simple things like trying to buy gas were nightmares (is that still the case?). I'm very sorry, but glad you and your family are okay.

Yikes, Micheline - how is your house? Glad that you are safe and finally have power restored. That's a long time to have no heat, especially at this time of year. We lost power for 5 days due to a December windstorm a few years ago, and for a week before that we had the heat turned off after a rat crawled into the heat vents and died (believe me, the smell when the heat came on was SO awful that a frigid house was preferable!) and it took ages to feel like everything had thawed.

Hello everyone,
Sorry for the complete radio silence. We are on the south shore of Long Island, and we just got (partial) power back last night! Still no heat or hot water, though we did a lot better than many people 'round these parts.

Alas, we lost a lot of clothes! Any advice for fashionable recovery wear? Lol

My mom in NJ is really thankful to the management of their building (and so am I!). It's a senior housing complex that has emergency generators so I wasn't too concerned about the hurricane. However, the generators started running out of fuel yesterday and the management was considering asking the tenants to leave. They got a delivery of fuel, and the management company also brought in new water heaters today (the old one failed) and worked all day to get them going. So now they not only have heat (which was on since Wed. or Thur.) but also hot water. The residents have also been getting free hot food 2-3 times a day.

The pharmacy where she gets her prescriptions was running 4 hrs/day off a generator beginning Thursday (no lights, just enough power to run their computer and probably the refrigerators) so she was able to pick up refills of her medications.

There were large catfish and bass all around their building after the storm - the river crested as the high tide and the hurricane winds forced ocean water inland, and the fish were stranded on land.

DS has spent most of last few days with a friend in the dorm because the campus has power while his off-campus house still has no electricity. There is no school but he was working at his part-time job (hospital coffee shop) because the hospital is up and running.

Lots of trees came down in our area of CT, with some flooding on the shoreline, which didn't affect us directly. Our power went out Monday about 4pm and returned last night - best shower ever! We spent the daylight hours of the storm sitting on the porch drinking Champagne and watching things blow around, and waving at our neighbours who were doing the same. Once it was dark we huddled inside - Champagne, candlelight, and an enormous storm, how romantic! - and despaired not being able to easily check the news. The ATT cell tower came down pretty early into the storm so one of our phones was totally out of commission for the first couple days, where was I when Verizon became so reliable?!

These were taken just down the street from us, Monday afternoon - before the storm really got started.

I'm back! With power and heat! It's been a cold 5 days. My area is still largely without power. I can go two blocks over and people are still using generators. The lines for gas are amazingly long. Easily a couple hours wait. Hubby and I take short drives in the area to see progress but are sticking to home for now. I'm an hour north of Seaside Heights and the destruction is so bad, you have to pinch yourself to believe it's real. Everywhere we go it's trees on power lines, poles snapped in two or three pieces. And no traffic lights are working yet, and no cops, you just drive on through. Stores are mostly closed or on generator power.

The Boston area is my second home, too. I grew up in northwest NJ, which has been hit hard, though not as badly as other parts of the state, but I'm anxious about how my elderly parents are coping with an extended power failure and other privations. My family originally hails from Long Island and the Newark area of NJ, and I've spent so much time at the Jersey shore and in and out of Manhattan. It is traumatic to see the pictures and hear the stories. My heart breaks a little each time.

I'm glad everyone here is okay. Zap, I'm sorry your boss is being pissy. Hope you're not letting it get to you. I'm so glad you're able to connect via social media. I only lost power for two days, but I would have gone crazy without being able to connect at least a little bit. However, our power was wiped out because a huge tree came down on our street near my house and took down a bunch of wires and a pole. All my neighbors were outside, even from farther down the street, keeping a kind of vigil on the progress of the utility and tree crews. It did make everything better to hang out with them and have some company.

Zap, I hear you. Boston is my second home and I'm fond of this place, but New York is where I'm from and the roots are deep. I have lots of friends and family in NYC and Long Island (New Jersey and Connecticut too) and it's traumatic to see the pics, and unimaginable to hear how badly the infrastructure has been affected. And people whose opinions I respect are putting this down to global warming...I'm very anxious, let's say.

I'm really sorry for all the disruption. New Yorkers are resilient, and I know it's going to be okay, but right now too many people are living like refugees. It breaks my heart. I'm glad you're okay, though, and it sure puts all my daily issues into perspective.

Just a more recent update regarding the situation here. My office opened up for the first time all week but I'm still working from home, it is too hectic to try to attempt to go to Manhattan right now. My boss seems to be pissed that I did not treck into the office, since I live so close but hey, I can enter numbers into my little spreadsheet from here. Seriously, he is a great guy but sometimes he is waaay too disconnected from reality. Subway service is very limited and the lines are not running fully. There is a carpooling mandate, so no cars are allowed into Manhattan without 3 passengers or more. It is chaos.

Social media has been a godsend, to at least be able to check how everyone is doing. I still have many friends and colleagues without power, especially those in sections of Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island. Schools are still closed and will be closed until Monday. Two of my friends, who are NYC teachers, told me there has never been a school closure this long, since the city is keeping school records. Just to give you some perspective on how bad things are here. New Yorkers are doing what we do when things get tough, you might have seen the images of people getting extension cords out for people to plug in devices etc. I am quite proud of how everyone is dealing with this.

The devastation we have all seen, it is very upsetting and emotional for me. I am pretty heartbroken about it. I am glad to see so many of you checking in.

Una, how is your sister?

Thanks for the concern. I'm in Stamford ct (it's on the coast near nyc on the Long Island Sound) and while we only lost power for a few hours (last year I was out for 5 days) we have no Internet and cell phone service is sporadic (sorry for typos as I'm writing on my phone). DH can't get into NYC for work and when he went out to find wifi, said many roads are still blocked. This has been the first day that I've been back to ylf.

No school ALL this week. We did have a great Halloween party last night. Kids were so happy and they did get to trick or treat in my neighborhood. Fyi, my husband and I were the 'fashion police'!

We were really, really lucky but it's still bad around here. My thoughts are with those along the east coast, in NYC and vicinity.

Rita, thanks for the thread. We just got our power about an hour ago. The first thing my husband asked was how the YLF community was ! We had prepared well and had plenty of water on hand ( we lose all access to water during outages because we are on a well with an electric pump).

I had no idea of the devastation in NJ and NY...I have been listening to my hand crank radio for a few minutes a day, but seeing it left me speechless. Those poor people. I would give up electricity for the rest of the year if it meant getting more crews down there FAST to help.

I am relieved to know everyone from our community is ok though.

The Red Cross is asking for donations of even just $10 and blood.

Finally got power back just a little while ago after it being out since Monday afternoon. I'm northwest of Boston. A fair number of trees down in the area which took lines down, but I haven't heard about a lot of damage. We were very lucky here compared to other places. My parents are in rural northwest NJ, and there is a lot of tree damage and flooding. My parents are fine, but they don't have power and probably won't for at least a week.

Thanks for starting this Rita.

It is so sad when we hear about the losses, but I am glad that so far you are all alright. I am wondering about Lisa and others that live in New Jersey and New York.

Thanks for starting this thread, Rita. We weathered the storm fine here in VA. We had a lot of rain but the winds were much less than anticipated. My in-laws in New Jersey are without power, but I was relieved to hear that Kindrex is doing well in Brooklyn and still has power. My heart goes out to all those who were impacted by this terrible storm.

In VA here, and it was a total non-event for us - everything closed for two days but it wasn't necessary.

Brother and sister-in-law in NYC (with a four day old baby!) also OK, they're on the upper west side and didn't even lose power.

A neighbor checked on our house and said everything looks ok from the outside -- just some branches and lots of leaves down. Not sure about our power.

Haven't heard from my tenant about our beach house in Annapolis yet, hoping that no news is good news.

Glad you all are ok!

Big hugs to everyone in the area! I cried looking at the pictures of damage this morning - so scary. Happy to hear that y'all are ok.

I'm in central CT and we lost power last night around 7:00pm, but it came back on around 10:00am this morning.

Some branches down in our yard, but no damage done.
