If you are looking for thong-type sandals I would second the recommendation for Chacos for gear-type sandals around the house. For similar footwear I would also recommend Montrail recovery thongs (they come in several styles) that you can bake in the oven and mold to your feet--- sounds weird, but they are super comfy and runners and people with plantar fasciitis. Now--- for out and about I would recommend Olukai flip flops. You can find they on zappos. I have extremely high arches and foot pain and have failed on Danskos, Birks, Naot, ect. but I love the three sandals mentioned above.

I agree with Shana. Birkenstocks have fantastic arch support and the newer styles are decidedly less clunky than the original two-strap "Arizona." I never wore them until I lived in Europe, where everyone wears them! Just don't wear them with socks!

I second the Naots rec -- I have three pairs of them, and I LOVE them. They have tons of arch support. Only downside is that they are expensive. Make sure to try on several different models, because they vary quite dramatically in width.

For good arch support sandals that can be found in Canada check out Chacos (at MEC) and Orthaheel at Softmoc. You may find that they're a little too .... gear-ish. My pedorthist also swears by Mephisto (also available at Softmoc). I consider their "Helen" model to be cute enough...

I would suggest Birkenstocks for running around the house - they provide excellent metatarsal support. Otherwise Danskos are great as well Keens & Chacos though they are more gear-like.

Thank you all for your help. I've never had to think about my feet before, other than the shoe fitting so that I didn't get blisters. I've always preferred very flat sandals and shoes but that along with running has probably caused this...LOL

Good idea about the orthotics in the shoes when the fall rolls around. I'm more interested in sandals right now as the weather is still too hot to be wearing full shoes and I *love* thong type sandals in the summer.

All the suggestions are really helpful! I knew I could count on you guys to help me stay cute *and* have healthy feet! LOL

Angie suggested Dansko .. and I'll second that with a hesitation. I'd actually recommend Sanita brand over Dansko for the "same" shoe.

Dansko contracted Sanita to make their shoes for years and years and they were branded with the Dansko name. They were phenomenal. A few years back, Dansko decided they'd had enough of the partnership and yanked it from Sanita and began to make their own shoes. The fit is very different now, they don't seem to last as long, and they are overall not the same shoe as when Sanita made them -- even though it's the same shoe/pattern/design. I was very frustrated with my Dansko's not fitting right any longer and found out what happened. I went to the Sanita shoes and haven't looked back. Sanita continued to make the Dansko styled shoes but with their own name.

So .. if you are a Dansko lover but have wondered what happened over the last few years, try Sanita and see if that fixes your issue.

That said, I'm also a huge fan of Clarks for their boots, sandals, and dress shoes. I can wear dressy shoes for hours if they are Clarks.

That barkingdog web site is really good :)
Unfortunatly, I couldn't work out how much those grape pair of flats would be to import to Australia... but they do ship here. Oh, and I don't have the cash for them after my recent cash splash... ok splashes.
From here. Another cool thing is that there are a lot of enclosed toe shoes :)
Any other Aussie out there brought shoes from this site?

The author has rheumatoid arthritis, and gives lots of info on how comfortable different shoes are. There's a special section for shoes for problem feet, as well as links to related websites and blogs.

Also, my mom has plantar fasciitis and she loves her Naots.

Danskos are your best bet for sandals with built in arch support. Have you tried them?

Shoes are a different story because you can insert your own orthotic. More variety!

I've gotten a running injury in my foot that requires I take a little better care of my feet and use shoes in the house that have arch support. I have only just begun liking shoes and now I'm probably going to have to limit my wearing of flats and flat sandals...Wah!

Anyhow I need a pair of shoes for around the house, preferably sandals now, and probably some kind of shoe in the colder months.

I've looked at some of the Clarks and Taos (at Softmoc here in Canada) and want to be armed with names to look for on my next excursion to the States.

Pictures would be great! Is it possible to not have to wear only good running shoes in the house and on the street?? I can wear cute shoes but only for a limited time and only when this thing (Plantar Fasciitis) isn't flared up.

Bummer cause I'm booked to run my first 10k run in two weeks. I doubt it will be healed by then, (but I'm gonna run anyway and just deal with the pain the next day...Then I'll really rest it...LOL)
