New Balance fits wide through the toe box which is great for me. I have the 327 and get compliments on them all the time. I have only walked about 3 or 4 miles at a go in them and found them to be very comfortable with no break in period.

Thanks Janet. I won't need heavy hiking shoes - sneakers would probably do it. I could look at trail runners which I could also wear on the bike.

I have a spot of arthritis in my left foot - nothing major - but I need to make sure my options work for my orthotics. Maybe I would be better to take:

Trail runners (new but bought pre trip)
Birks - EVA - for water sports, hotels, beach etc
Gold Sandals - for dressy occasions
One more pair of sneakers or city sandals.

I can walk a few km per day without orthotics but think I would be wise to plan on shoes that cope with them which might mean walking sandals are not an option.

Oh! For hiking shoes, when I travel, unless I am doing heavy hiking, I often leave the big boots at home and take trail runners. My Brooks Divide work great for this. They’re much lighter, both to pack, and on the foot. My Merrell hiking boots are super sturdy but also bulky, and a little stiff and heavy. I actually feel better walking in the trail runners. Just a thought.

I have never regretted an extra pair of shoes on a long trip, as long as they are super comfortable. But! I have also taken advantage of being in a great shopping city to buy shoes on a trip that ended up being brilliant for walking (the Onitsuka Tigers I bought in Paris got an immediate workout).

I echo Ket’s praises of Sofft. My fallback fashion sneaker that also provides plenty of comfort is Adidas. And I have walked a 10 mile day in NYC in my Seychelles fisherman sandals. For rugged rural adventures when I want a sandal option I have Tevas. I can’t wear Birks (I try them on from time to time to see if there is a magical pair that works for me but NOPE), so I know that a specific brand that works for one person is far from a slam dunk for another.

All that is to say, I like your four-shoe strategy. I think two pairs of “city” shoes and two pairs of “gear” shoes will be great for the itinerary you have.

Thanks Lucy - that's helpful!

I am thinking at the moment of taking
- one pair hiking shoes (old)
- one pair New Balance (new)
- one pair EVA Birks (new)
- one pair gold sandals (old)
OR
- one pair New Balance (new)
- one pair teva (new)
- one pair gold sandals (old)

The hiking shoes are very comfortable but bulky and heavy. I need to think if I need them or if I can make do. I need a biking option, a city walking option, a dinner option, a beach option, and maybe an off road hiking choice. But no more than four pairs maximum! And I need to have happy feet.

Yay - what a great trip!
I spent 3 weeks in Europe in summer last year - late August, but in Greece so it was still very warm.
I wear heels most days at home, but I decided to go with shoes that would not stop me doing anything due to sore feet! So I took four pairs:

One pair of new balance (which were great) pinky coral
One pair of arch support Sketchers (actually really great - surprised me) - beige creamy neutral
One pair of Birkenstock sneakers, low profile, black
One pair of flat gold sandals with arch support - dressier

I alternated the days between the New Balance and the Sketchers. At night in cooler areas I wore the Birk sneakers (being black and low profile they worked pretty well with skirts, cropped pants or jeans). I also wore them the one day I had to wear a dress for walking, due to visiting a monastry. Most nights I wore the gold sandals.

It was the best holiday I've ever had, feet wise. If it was hotter again, I might swap out one pair of sneakers for Tevas or something similar - but with sneakers, it is easier to prevent blisters.

Thanks all. Going to do some research for sure.

It's getting the balance right with my shoes and not taking too many pairs - but covering my needs. And after tracking my shoes wears I know that practical shoes get a lot of wear so I am happy to have some options (as long as I can store them).

The trip is in August so I have a couple of months up my sleeve to get them and wear them in.

Ouu.. sounds exciting, looks like you’ve been given plenty of great advice, glad to hear you’ll be taking a few footwear choices too. It’s great having some back-ups in case your feet get bothered wearing the same footwear everywhere with all the walking that gets done on these holidays.

So fun! Just a thought - you might want to buy the alternative pair in Europe (which countries will you visit?). I have no sneaker advice but definitely recommend any sort of Birk or Teva for long walks.

I had good success with Taos sandals last summer. In particular, their “Big Time” sandals, which I bought in both tan and cranberry. I actually duplicated the tan pair and then painted them gold with polish. They came up a treat. They have Velcro straps that make them easily adjustable for comfort. Sizes are American, which I think run about a half size smaller than ours. I sized up. They sold out on Styletread so I bought my second pair through Manning Shoes, a regional retailer (they ship to NZ too).

My second favourite style is from the Summer before. Kenya from Easy Steps. It’s a C fitting. A little more refined than the Taos. Still very comfortable but a thinner sole so not as suited to rough terrain. I also turned one of these gold. (I am a little obsessed with gold.) You can get them from The Iconic or Shoe HQ.

Birks are great. They make several flat sandals with back straps actually! (I believe the Arizona style has a back strap, for instance.) Birks tend to be best if they’re broken in first. Not sure if you’ve planned for that? I wouldn’t take a brand-new pair on a trip unless I first wore them tons around the house and for several long walks.

What a fun and exciting trip!! I love what you have planned already and heartily approve of extra shoes to rotate through. (I’m always nervous I’ll feel bored of outfits or shoes on a trip if I try to pack too minimally.)

Try Sofft!! I have adored my Sofft sandals. I got a flat gladiator style 1-2 summers ago and they’ve been wonderful. I’ve worn them walking streets and towns from a few hours to all day long. So far, I’ve never come home with sore, tired, or aching feet. My feet have always felt great. They also offer sneakers. Haven’t tried those but I bet they’re on par with their sandals. No break-in period was necessary either.

I tried on their Bali style and didn’t like it. Still very comfy but the thicker/wider ankle strap wasn’t for me. (I like ankle straps but I’m sensitive to width and where they hit.)

Here’s a link below to their sandals. Several flat options. The Evonne, Mackenna and Nadia styles look very long-walking-day friendly.

This is not my forte at all, but I did a quick search on Tevas and thought these were pretty:

In sneakers I might try for something like a Skechers Mary Jane.

For comfortable walking sandals I have had great success with Ecco in the past.

These have a cushy footbed that absorbs sweat and all the straps are velcro and adjustable for a perfect fit.

Hi All

I am lucky enough to be heading to Europe for four weeks in August and September. 9 days will be cycling and the rest travelling and sightseeing. I will have to pack semi-lightly given our itinerary. It should be fairly warm so I will likely only take one or two options for cool days.

I am fairly sorted with clothing although I need one or two more actual biking pieces.

I want to take three or four pairs of shoes.

- Sneakers that can be worn cycling and for long walking days (probably new)
- practical but stylish sandals (new)
- EVA Birks - already own
- woven sandals or gold sandals (just as an another option as I like to rotate). Both are good for walking but not for the long days out and about.

I am thinking New Balance 327 as a good walking option that also look nice. I haven't owned them before but they get great recommendations.

I don't know what sandals for walking - I could get leather birkenstocks but I prefer a back strap for long days on my feet.

I will buy from NZ or Australian retailers. But we will have lots of international brands available here.

Thanks in advance.
