I love your collection of sandals but can understand your desire to bring in fresher styles.

I agree something dark would be a great addition, and a wildcard that you love. You won't know it until you see it!!

I have the EF sport sandals and am tiring of them too - I do quite like them with jeans or shorts but am off them with skirts and dresses.

Thanks for the continued feedback!

Rachy, I love the idea of gladiators -- in practice they are a little more difficult for me. I'm conscious of styles that come up high onto the ankle -- some of them work on me and some of them chop me at an unflattering place. Ankle straps are very hit or miss on me. Diagonal straps and styles with a vertical line tend to be more flattering, but the old Freebirds were ankle straps and looked really good. As with so many things, I think the devil is in the details, and it can be really hard to evaluate a sandal NOT on an actual foot. I wish more online retailers would do like Zappos and include a photo or video with the shoe on a model.

Slim cat, you're so right about white! Yikes, something to consider. I think I've really adopted silver as my white substitute.

Jaime, I hear you about keeping comfortable shoes. The Arche are staying. But I think I'm just over the EF ones. I remember Angie commented about them possibly being "dated for my style" two years ago! I didn't wear them last year at all, and I don't recall wearing them the year before either. I'm ready to be done with summer sandals that make me feel meh, as my summer outfits are already my less favorite ones. I need a bit of style punch to come from my footwear in summer.

The point of this refresh is to get me over the hump of hanging onto shoes that are merely serviceable as we transition to wearing our stuff back out in the world again after so many months of self-quarantining. I've gotten my use out of so many of these shoes that I will not be unhappy letting any of them go, except for the ones I mentioned I really enjoy.

It doesn't sound like anyone is finding any of these particularly "dated" and I'm glad that whole concept of dated is becoming less relevant! But please do let me know if you see something here as being less representative of my style goals. I will take no offense. :-D

My instinct has been to find:

- a good stylish replacement for the old black Cole Haan flats (the black patent leather pair at the bottom on the finds, or far right in photo #3). Something in a strappy but not visually heavy gladiator-ish style?

- one other pair that is versatile but lower contrast with my pale skin -- I can get away with less "flattering" styles more easily if they are lower contrast than black. I've been thinking a reptile/snake print since I like those a lot and they seem to be plentiful at the moment, and they end up being versatile if the colors are right. That's why I am considering the Franco Sarto ones I posted the other day (pic below).

- Maybe a fun pair that is a bit of a wild card. A color is a possibility.

Thanks for the feedback and ideas. This is helpful.

You have a lovely collection of sandals! As some of the others have mentioned, I think gunmetal/pewter or a dark snakeskin would be great additions. I feel like those just go with everything. You've inspired me to get all of mine out and do an evaluation as well; mostly to postpone a major case of wantsies I have at the moment :)

Like Lisa I got confused figuring out which is which but will suggest your keeping the EF and Arche ones that are very comfortable. I am against getting rid of very comfortable shoes that are still in good condition and you don't actively hate - just put them away for awhile. Meanwhile if most of your keepers are black are would look for a low contrast pair. Sometimes that makes an outfit just flattering enough for me in the summer.

Your collection is beautiful - love metallics of course! I'm too off the black sandals ( last pair isn't getting much wear ).
Pure white sandal is somewhat difficult to keep pristine - combinations of white, blue ( or turquoise ) and orange - would be fun!
Love the idea of dark snake skin print sandal.

I guess I *am* surprised you haven’t done a sandal update in awhile, but... Time flies when you’re living the pandemic life! I had thoughts along the line of Angie’s ... leaning a little towards the gladiators more heavily...

I like all three of those a lot, Lisa. It's funny you included a white pair -- I don't do white in footwear unless it's a sneaker or a sandal, and I had a pair of white sandals years ago that I really enjoyed and wore out. I wonder about getting some again. Hmmm. Break my addiction to black?

1.the first white ones are a riff on the Rockstuds (DV)
2.second wedge looks cute and comfy (DV)
3. and Angie thinks we all need puffy slides (I already have a pair , lol) and I know you love bright blue - but I can't remember if you go for slides or not.

Hahahahaha! Yes, you know me, Lisa.

Alas, my favorite shoe retailers are no longer in my errand-running range. No Nordstrom, no more shoe boutique. I'd have to go to Baltimore...

I'm simultaneously overwhelmed and underwhelmed by what I find online. There's a lot of...stuff out there, but not a lot that sparks desire, ya know? Perhaps it's early in the season and there will be more later. Or I'm not looking in the right places. Zappos seems to have a bit more than Shopbop or Nordstrom. I will check some other online sources another day.

Good observations and ideas, all!

I agree that the dark/black options are in the most need of refreshing! Cat2, I need to take a look at pewter and gunmetal -- that can be a nice alternative to black with a little more interest.

Jonesy, I'm intrigued by the dark snakeskin idea -- I don't really recall seeing that in a sandal in my perusing, but it hasn't exactly been what I've actively sought, so maybe i'll focus some effort in that direction.

Lisa, the color idea is intriguing, but I'd need to look at what I'm wearing the sandals with before committing to a colorful pair. I've gone down that path in the past and then felt like they weren't versatile enough, and I end up reaching for the neutral options instead. But if the style is right and the color works with my wardrobe, perhaps... Blue or orange would be the most likely contenders, as I have those colors represented in bags. Orange would definitely be more wild card, but could be fun.

Gillian P, I really don't mind refreshing at a leisurely rate -- no rush, as I do have things to wear in the meantime. However, I tend to get a bit like a dog with a bone, once I get a hankering to update something in my wardrobe -- I tend to look for a solution and can be a little quick to jump on the first thing that works.

LaPed, I have never tried any of those brands, although I have found the occasional Bed-Stu style appealing in the past. I am not sure how their fits are. I'll take a look and see if their styles appeal to my current aesthetic.

Angie, you are right on my wavelength with the platform/flatform, and dainty gladiator styles. I haven't really looked at puffy slides and wonder if they'd work for me. Certainly worth taking a look!

Thanks for all the feedback. I realize I didn't exactly organize this post for optimal reader convenience, so it was probably a bit stream of consciousness. Thanks for playing along anyway! I welcome any specific recommendations as well if anyone sees a style that screams my name. ;-)

I think when it’s your own shoes you see and wear them enough to get a bit sick of them, but from a outside perspective you have what looks like a really stylish, cohesive, and well-rounded sandal capsule! Do you want to replace the sandals that are in the go pile and the holding zone at a one in-one out rate, or are you looking to eliminate those and fill only some of the gaps? I agree with Lisa that a statement color would be fun.

I’m not focused enough to know which are which from the photos and scrolling back and forth . And I don’t mean this in a snarky way . I retired my Freebirds and my version of the Paul Greens ( slightly less $$ copy ) a few summers ago as the heel no longer felt good and I was over the look ( I wore the Freebirds to death ) Sandals are tough , aren’t they ? They can get beat up and worn looking much quicker than a sneaker or a boot , hence I don’t keep mine as long as I do other footwear . I look to a few specific brands for trend updates as shoes are “ it” for me and define my look most of the time . How about introducing something in more of a statement colour ? Like the bright blue of your stretch Converse , for example . Or an orange , a green maybe ? Yellow ?

Never too analytic, Janet! :)

It sounds like your light-neutral and metallic assortment is in decent shape, while your black and dark-neutral options have been worn to death and need updating. This is exactly what happens to me too. And it's hard to find good black sandals!

Does Cydwoq or Bed-Stu work for you? Or Beek? I'm trying to think of other sandal brands that do edgy-but-comfortable...

Sandal heaven! But if you want to boot out some, just my initial instinct tells me, I would keep the left pair in each of photos 2 and 3, the blue ones and the burgundy suede dressy sandals. But my events and groups, if any do happen this summer, are probably more casual and ordinary than yours.

I am perhaps overthinking the sandal situation because I'm anticipating actually being able to go out in public dressed in REAL OUTFITS this summer, after spending last summer in an endless haze of pool slides and cut-off shorts.

But here is my current collection. I just realized I haven't really bought anything updated in a couple of years. The Rag & Bone are probably my most recent sandal purchase, and that was two years ago. I bought them on my shopping day with bj1111, when I also got the COS black dress, and those are very happy items for me.

Some of these are in the holding zone, probably going away:

- The Paul Green Cayenne and the Freebirds I think have had their day, although I can see a possible need for the Cayennes if I need to "dress up" a summer dress for an occasion.
- The old Kenneth Cole snake print slides fall off my feet now, so those need to go.
- The Eileen Fishers don't seem to gel with my style right now, but I like the comfort.
- The absolutely ancient Cole Haan black patent leather have been a placeholder for years. I'd like an updated look for a visually "light" and refined flat, black sandal that looks good for times when I don't want "stompy" or "clunky," but have not found any that are as flattering on the foot and as comfortable as these, that strikes my fancy. I welcome suggestions for a replacement for these. I end up reaching for this style with long floaty midi/maxi skirts and black tops, when a chunky shoe seems a little too heavy.

Some of these I'm not excited about anymore, but I keep wearing them because they fill a hole:

- The Sam Edelman black slides with the white soles. They were super cheap from the Rack and are serviceable but kind of meh.
- The Gentle Souls rose gold slides have been very good to me and I've worn them to death, but they're getting stretched out and are a little less than fab these days. I suspect this will be their last summer.
- The Tsonga custom finds are flip flops I bought in South Africa, and they're super comfortable for very casual wear, and I will continue to wear them that way, but I don't want more of this style.
- The silver Diba wedge/platform slides -- they're getting a little stretched out but still look good and I can still make them work.

What I still love to wear:

- The Rag & Bone cognac and white ones
- The Free People Mont Blancs
- The metallic Ancient Greek Sandals
- The AS98, LD Tuttle, and United Nude heeled sandals, but they are a bit dressier and not really all-day walking sandals so much anymore, so their use is more limited.
- The black Arche sandas (but I don't want to wear them too much, getting a little burnt out on them as they've been a default choice for two years now)
- The Pikolinos metallic sandals. Not super edgy but very comfortable and versatile.

This is long and maybe too analytic-focused for most of the forum, perhaps, but in my effort to be mindful about updating, it's really helping to write it out and look at the collection all together. I am a little surprised by how old the collection is, as a whole, considering this is the bulk of what I'll be wearing on my feet for the next few months, aside from sneakers and hiking shoes.

You can see in my Finds some of what I've collected lately, but it was a bit hyperfocused on pale blue to go with the pale blue bag I got for Christmas. However, I don't want to get to wrapped around that axle. My greater need is for updated, fashionable NEUTRAL sandals to wear with skirts/dresses, crops, and shorts through the summer months.

Suggestions and reactions welcome! Thanks for reading if you followed this far. I struggle with summer, and really rely on footwear to update and edge up my look, so I'm willing to invest in this a bit this year. I spent next to nothing on summer footwear last year.

I'm adding labels for the photos, sorry for initial disorganized post. All photo descriptions are left-to-right

Pic 1: Gentle Souls rose gold flatform slides - ok for another season

Free People copper flats - love them. Not for the hottest days but keepers

Rag & Bone cognac flats - love them. Keep.

Pic 2: Pikolinos metallic flats - not super interesting but comfortable - keep.

Diba platform wedge silver slides - comfortable and still look good - keep.

Pic 3: Sam Edelman black slides with white soles. Not my favorite look but comfortable and serviceable - keep.

Arche black sandals - chunky so good for certain looks, and very comfortable - keep.

Cole Haan ancient black patent flats - comfortable but really old and starting to look ragged. Really want a replacement update for the more delicate, flattering style though.

Pic 4: Ancient Greek Sandals multi-metallic strappy flats. Love - keep.

Tsongas blue flip flops. Casual and comfortable. Keep.

Tsongas silver flip flops. Ditto to the blue ones above. Keep.

Pic 5: Dressier heeled sandals, really in another category:

Sol Sana plum studded sandals. Keep.

United Nude black and white heeled sandals. Keep.

AS98 metal open-detail heel sandals. Keep.

LD Tuttle strappy heeled sandals. Keep.

The ones not in the photographs but in Finds are the ones I've already put in holding zone or am pretty sure I'm letting go: Freebirds, Paul Green heeled metallic Cayennes, reptile print Kenneth Coles, and the Eileen Fishers.
