Good walking shoes. Sweater and coat.

I'd stay away from the light end of the colour spectrum. Like white capris, a baby blue tee and Skeechers will make you a target for pick pockets. Throw some darker colours in there, like navy, charcoal, black, dark green...
Sounds pretty wonderful! I dream of being a tourist in my own local area because somehow we rarely do those things

As for weather - be prepared. Anyone visiting SF bay is wise to wear layers and pack a topper (not heavy though) for early mornings and after sundown. It can really chill off by the water but also in the hills. Sweaters are perfect layered over knit tops. You will see unprepared tourists wearing those SF sweatshirts from Fisherman's Wharf all over town. Not a bad idea to have a tiny purse umbrella.

Denim is very versatile here and pretty much goes everywhere. A dressier bottom (slacks or dress) is nice option for a dinner out but dressed up jeans can go to majority of spots. A blazer with jeans is good for the climate and easy.
Comfy shoes for lots of walking.
A cross body bag is safe and convenient.

If you are renting a car and can get out of the city, I highly recommend a day trip to Muir Woods and Sausalito area. Just over the Golden Gate Bridge in less than an hour and so pretty.

Enjoy!
My hubby and I spent a week in May in San Francisco a couple of years ago. What fun! It was actually sunny and in the 70s the whole time we were there (no famous fog).

I would recommend light layers: t-shirt, lightweight cardigan, windbreaker or light jacket. Things you don't mind schlepping around while you're sightseeing. Wear darker pants or jeans - San Francisco is dirty, just like any big city. And, as others have mentioned, comfortable shoes are a must - you'll be doing a lot of walking. I preferred my closed-toe shoes for daytime sightseeing (again, because the city streets are grimy). I used my dressy sandals for when we went out in the evening.

Have a wonderful time - San Francisco is beautiful!

Yep you always want layers - scarves, light sweaters - I think my sister who lives there carries a sweater year-round! Even on a warm day, it'll be cool and windy by the water.
Anything goes there. I did not find it like say Manhattan where one can easily feel underdressed/out of place as a tourist.

Check the weather forecast before you leave including by zip codes and DON'T go by this week's weather which will be unseasonably warm, actually hot, for this area. SF has a lot of micro climates. It can get cool and windy in the evening and it's always windy by the GG Bridge. Check out the art light installation on the Bay Bridge; maybe have evening drinks near the Embarcadero so you can see them in warmth.
Hi Sheri,
Do you have some outfits in mind that you're thinking about taking? If you could post some pictures we can help you decide what works.

My recommendation is to go for a smart casual look, with layers for the varying temperatures there, and most definitely comfortable footwear, since you're likely to be doing a LOT of walking.

My husband and I will be going to San Francisco next week for about 5 days. We are very excited (kids are staying with grandparents). Most of my clothing dollars go to my work wardrobe, so I would like some suggestions on what to bring along as I have a limited casual wardrobe.

We will be doing quite a bit of sight-seeing (museums, a few tours, walking around). I typically wear capris, Skeechers, t-shirts on the weekends.

Any suggestions?

Sheri
