MsMary hi! And thanks. I have that vest in taupe and a blue-grey! So considering the blue or a a navy down vest which fits slimmer, it’s very light, , but maybe is less “ modern” as the Uniqlo. I think I will do some tryons for h to e proportions with the support acts, both for trip and for our crazy spring weather here.
I usually am not relying on vests for major warmth because my arms get cold— so I tend to wear them in those shoulder seasons when other people are wearing short sleeves! Anyway, a thing I love for travel about all the “ sporty” puffer vests I have are the zipper pockets , and usually an inner sort of pocket.

Happy Retirement! I hope it is going well.

I always freeze at night in San Diego so I agree you need warm layers. One thing I am always happy to have with me is a lightweight puffer vest. This one comes in a lot of nice colors -- I have it in navy and beige, which is really kind of gold. https://www.uniqlo.com/us/en/p.....5&

Thanks, Suz. I’m having a kind of fun putting it together, despite analysis- paralysis and decision issues. I also have a tendency to want to pack more options so as to “ experiment “ with what works best and how something works. This works ok for car travel ( road testing!) but not as much for carry on.

I think, based on a highly knit-heavy capsule, you should be able to manage this casual capsule in a carry on, maybe with a rather large personal item as well. Good luck!

I also tried out a cotton utility jacket that works well with capsule , but is less “ stuff-able” if I needed to take it off & carry around, so had laid it aside in favor of thinner “ Athleisure “ -type fabrics & layers. But may re- think.

Suz, I am traveling with DD1 who does not travel light and IS checking a bag , and certainly DD2 and SIL are doing that with children to pack for, so I considered that. I think if I were going with different activities planned, more “ grownup” occasions/ dining out or wider range of locales, I might take more what- if’s and check bag.

Here I think because of casual, kid-wrangling nature of the trip ( I expect to enable the parents to have “ date night” or other time off), I’m trying to challenge myself to more restrained, casual-wear packing. I hope to travel more, some by myself and want to get better at lighter weight, versatility, maybe smaller bags which might be required. Though not there yet!

DonnaF , thank you. I agree with your assessment of, prolonged sun ( the Zoo comes to mind) , will want fling something off except need a sleeve for sun! Shade/ breezy, wish for more coverings.

Jaime, yes— I suspect there IS a W/D because this is a beach-type rental; I am waiting to hear more about the “ amenities “. If confirmed that would increase my confidence in taking several layerable mix & match combinations but not so much duplicating of one type, if that makes sense.
I can easily hand wash & air dry some things, but there will already be a lot of clothing entropy, so, not looking to be too focused on hanging up too much stuff.

Sounds like you'll be in SD in late March/early April? I've been many times to SD but I don't think I've ever been there during that time frame.

I also run cold; only had warm flashes, never hot flashes. Leave the very warmest stuff at home UNLESS you think you might be sitting outside in an unsheltered place near the water after dark after the kids are in bed; you know, visiting so as not to disturb the kids.

Also, keep in mind that in Spring, it can get quite toasty in the sun but be very cool in the shade. Frustrating! I would leave the SS Ts at home along with turtlenecks. I have merino tanks to wear as a better regulating underlayer than my regular camisoles.

Have fun!

What I did for my SF trip in the summer was bring it ALL and so I said to heck with carry on! Brought and checked a medium sized suitcase and that worked well.

For layering -- I had sleeveless (for the hit mid-day), long sleeved tops/ cotton sweaters and a denim jacket (that easily went over the sleevelss. The denim jacket was oversized so it also went over sweaters. I had a linen/cotton blazer too. (Not as casual a trip as yours). AND a lightweight puffer jacket. I never used the puffer but I had it in case.

Ginger, wow, thanks. I’m listening, because, I just hate to be cold. Much more tolerant of being a little over-cozy.
I think walking & moving will help, but then there’s standing around…

I could take my very light puffer. I’ve seen that recommended on some SD “ lists”. I can see how it’s also a bit wind-resistant. I wore it and the rain shell in Ireland! One thing that’s comfortable about it is it’s so easy sliding on-off. Kind of my thing against squeezing into too many thin layers, too-tight armholes. Mine is a good color generally but a warmer berry than the palette I’ve got going , and a little boxy to fit winter wear, but I wear it constantly here and take it on car trips, so hey, it’s not rocket surgery! I’ve been looking for a lighter “ springy” color & a bit sleeker fit, but haven’t found what I want & too late now to try much new ( avoiding mistakes).

This is also helpful in the vein of, if you could only keep these xxx items, which ones…
I’m also wondering if I need ANY SS T’s. Maybe 1 if any. I don’t wear a SS T under a cotton- type LS T unless I have to— for me it affects the fit & drape, if you will , and feels constricted.

For what it's worth, I have flown into San Diego several times in the summer and also visited the tall ships one day. I always found it chilly, even in August. Granted, at that point in the year I'm fully acclimatized to Texas heat and a lot of things feel chilly to me. But I didn't dream of putting on a swim suit. I'm positive I would be quite cold in March. I agree with Suz that some kind of windbreaker would be good, and personally I would probably bring a lightweight puffer.

Suz, thanks, that is very helpful! I will skip the shorts, as I was thinking. Every little bit of nope, nope decisions is helpful in focusing.

I have lots of LS T’s & so reviewing the warmth & “ feel” of them for travel.
For cotton I mainly have a thin Pima cotton ancient JJill I’ve re- claimed from the gardening capsule because I’ve got a couple in HEWI colors & they’re better quality than current versions. Also EB LST’s but in ploy/cotton now, don’t like as well as EB Pima.

I’ve ruled out most of my 3/4 sleeve tops- prefer coverage & just “ push up” LS.

I have an Icebreaker gray merino SS T but still breaking ( ha) it in, to see if itchy.
I also have a berry-colored merino LS that’s thin and proven all-day wearable in colder weather, so it’s a possibility. Especially for the plane, & evenings out.
I also was considering a Uniqlo LS thin fleece, it’s in the Heattech line I think, but not “ underwear”, & it seems to be comfortable across temps for me. It also works as pj or lounge.

So, thinking of doing at least 1 warmer LS T, as you suggested.
I really like the idea of having 2-3 “ warmth levels” of base layer tops & seeing which works.

Also, appreciating your input on the the rain shell— it can be the “ it’s colder than I thought “ layer outdoors & if out at night since really warms up anything it’s over.

We went to San Diego 1.5 years ago, in October. It stayed between 66 and 71, and was foggy. I grew up in the SF Bay Area where fog was cold. This was not cold, and so I wore shorts, tee shirt, windbreaker and water sandals every single day. I brought nice things for dinner, but La Jolla was very casual, and I only bothered to change into them one evening. We never went in the water, BTW, but walked and walked and walked (17 to 21 thousand steps, per my phone). We stayed by the Museum of Contemporary Art.

The hardest trips to pack for, I think, are those that we'll make in the shoulder seasons to a climate quite different from our usual climate. It can be really hard to imagine what we'll need and want, try as we may. So I sympathize.

If I were packing for these temps/ this type of trip, I'd probably be thinking much along your lines (casual & layers). I think I'd be focusing heavily on lightweight merino (layers so well and offers warmth) along with cotton.

Having said that, I'm having the devil of a time replacing my completely worn out merino hoodie, so I know it isn't always easy to find exactly the right items.

I don't know the San Diego climate at all -- so can't advise on that.

But my thought, looking at your list, and your activities, is that you can probably forget about shorts. If anything, take the lightweight Brooklyn pant instead of a short. More versatile. I would try to keep it to 4 bottoms at most, for 6 days. You might want more tops.

I find scarves very useful in these situations -- on and off, easy to store. I think I would bring a rain shell/ windbreaker if you have a lightweight one. A puffer is probably more than needed except perhaps at night? So that woudl depend on whether you are going out at night and staying out for any length of time. For example, I go on night-time walks and yesterday we had daytime temps in the mid-60s and I was wearing a LS tee shirt in the garden (no other layers) but wore a light puffer for my nighttime walk.

I’m in the process of putting together my travel wardrobe and all the other items for a trip to San Diego with family and grandchildren, in near future, 6 days plus the travel day on each end. Flying, no car, so packing carryon + a cabin tote that’s big enough to hold a few clothing items. Staying in a type of AirB&B and still trying to learn if there’s a W/D. With little kids, we’ll be doing a lot of meals “ at home” and I expect lounging around many nights.

Temps projected to be mid ‘60’s day/ mid-50’s night lows. I’ve been to SD years ago usually May , professional trips with some free time, and recall mild pleasant walking outside but have almost no recollection of how I dressed. I might have even had a harbor cruise and if that was SD, I was cold!

I’ve got various options laid out and for sure doing layers, but have found myself dithering about what range of “ warmth” to include, without overpacking. I run very cold but occasionally hot flash, ha! Plus, I prefer looser fits and don’t like feeling stuffed into too many layers- so for example, if I wear a LS T + LS shirt or thin sweater + hoodie jacket I start to feel like my actual layers might have been too light to begin with. But, the thinner the layers, the easier to stuff into a crossbody bag or tie around waist.

Anyhoo, I’ll dive into some of my choices & some of my dithering.
First, “ activity categories “, some of which could overlap:

1) Daytime walkabout & activities, zoo, aquarium, parks. Walking, standing, outdoor sun, some indoor time.

2) Beach - but mostly “ playing,” as is cold water! & I assume cool/ breezy + SUN.

3) Evenings in house, cooking, playing, putting kids to bed, some grownups might be able to stay up later than the kids! It’s very possible I’ll feel chilly inside if others want cool air temp. Thinking one softer, looser, warmer, outfit might be worth having IF have room and/ or overlaps with day or sleep.
3) Sleep capsule: Pj’s—worth it for 7 nights; usually I take thin items, not warm enough to wear for lounge; though warmer Lounge could be sleep. Travel microfiber robe -probably-I just find it convenient when sharing rooms & bathrooms.

Shoes: 3
1 Brooks sneaker-wear on plane
Pack 2nd Brooks or Rykaa sneaker; 1 lightweight water/beach shoe

Pants: 3,4,or 5!
1. COH slim straight Jean- wear on plane ( soft, stretchy, was comfy on car trip
2. VB gray Jean/ chino
1&2 serve same purpose but expect to be main “ day out” pants.
3. Gray cotton/ rayon utility pants for beach, thinking as “ dedicated “ beach. Can fit over swim shorts.
4) Maybe/ not : Athleta Brooklyn poly pant. These are so lightweight , easy- dry, had thought of these as might wear for day or beach, but now thinking I don’t really want to grub in the sand in them. Not warm enough alone in breezy 55-60.
5) A cozy knit jogger pant- lounge or day.
2 options: Gap poly/ cot jogger , or a warmer Uniqlo fleece- lined straight slim pant. Gap has zip pockets; Uni has deep pockets ( useful for street wear). Dithering about warmth level.

Shorts: Athleta Trekkie, if any. Not shorts-weather Hence why considering more “ pants” than usual lists.

TOPS
SS T’s: Usually a staple, but maybe only 2 , because, chilly, sun.
LS T’s: 2
LS button front: 1, or 2. Eddie Bauer sun type shirts, 1 white, 1 lilac- vanity, might like the change , might wear one every day, layer easily for me. White & bright pastel are risky but SO fun-sun.

Pullover(s) - love both, need ..?
- medium- thick cotton loose- knit pullover that is super comfy, relaxed fit. Feels very vacay but maybe redundant with hoodies which are easier on- off.
-Uniqlo thin “ sweater” pullover, more like a refined knit sweatshirt-warmer, packs smaller, dressier than hoodies

Jackets- big dither.
Have:
—Athleta thin gray poly hoodie- like because not too tight.
-Title 9 deep lavender hoodie- thin, layers over but also under a button front. HEWI color!
I’m tempted to take both….
—Thicker cotton- poly Athleta gray hoodie I just got, that I thought was going to be my airplane jacket + lounge + night temps, BUT it’s tighter on wrist & armholes & I don’t “ love” putting it on, so think it’s not “ the one” , so should return.
— Fjallraven warm knit zip jacket-I really think this is too warm- was why I got the cotton- poly knit. But now wondering.
All above jackets have zip pockets, one of my travel goals when possible.

Rain/wind:
- Marmot light rain shell. ? Usefulness? Omit ? In SD maybe more windbreaker / beach. Packs down well. But, still more bulky / floppy if not really needed.

Other warm layers to consider or sub:
-a nano down jacket or vest. I thought that might be too much even for me, but would welcome opinions.
-Undersilks longjohns to wear under pants. Not great as pj’s. More as insurance for , wow, I’m freezing here. Was hoping to take my chances.
Or, Jockey slip- shorts, above knee, as an underlayer.
Not likely to change out bottom layers when “out”— public restrooms, I could change tops if sweltering, , but not taking off shoes, pants.

Hat(s) definitely, & scarf, warm or neck- bandana use maybe.

For the beach, I’ll pack swimwear which for me is tankini +swim shorts— But, I’m almost 100% sure I’ll need to wear pants ( for sun and for cold) plus a sun shirt/ rash guard & maybe another layer if it’s windy! Family members are likely to pack 2 suits but I’m wondering if I might find I find it better to just have “ beach clothes”with the above roll- up pants & will hardly need an actual suit! Because 2 different suits while not too heavy, is NOT minimal teeny bikini for packing .

Zip rash guard vs wear LS shirt +/- hoodie

So. Obviously can’t take ALL that. Planning a test - packing run tomorrow & regroup.

I appreciate any advice & weather/ temp tips from CA dwellers of travelers, and capsule/ packing tips all around. I’ve been a big “ what if” packer and trying to trim down.
