I have noticed this effect before too, but usually it's more subtle. I often try on two of the same item in the same size just in case one fits a little better. Sometimes I think it's my imagination, but sometimes it's definitely not. :-)
I agree about fit sometimes being different in the same item in the SAME store, let alone a different store! Things can be terribly inconsistent, especially when you find a pair that fits just right. The smallest amount of difference in cut or even length sometimes can alter the entire fit and make them feel like an entirely different piece of clothing. With jeans, especially, I need to try them on and to be sure before buying.

Yes both my DH and I have recently had bad experiences ordering jeans from ON/Gap. The sizing and even cut was just not consistent. I'll be buying jeans in person from now on.
Don't laugh, but my DH, who has very fussy feet, insisted that he could tell in which country his favorite shoe was manufactured. The black version was made in Spain, the brown in Romania, and the dark grey version in the Philippines. Exactly the same model number and style, but the Spanish version fit him perfectly while the Romanian version was sloppy in the heel and arch. The company rep actually told him that he was most likely correct since each country had their own set of lasts for the shoe.
I've had this happen too. Sometimes it is because things were manufactured in different seasons, sometimes it is just variance from pair to pair. Clothing is cut in big stacks and assembled. A different place in the stack, a different sewer, you get a slightly different fit. And of course the manufacturers tweak things from time to time, mostly to keep things on style, but sometimes I am convinced just to keep us on our toes! Reorder from Zappos and take advantage of the free shipping and returns and order multiples then try them on and see which of them fits best. I haven't bought a pair of jeans in the last fifteen years without trying on at least three of the exact same thing to see which is the best. I mean it.

Reorder from Zappos!

Yes, this can happen with fit. A different manufacturer makes the same product and this causes it to fit differently.
I am thinking of reoridering from Zappos. Yes, it has to be shipped to me, but $15 more is so worth it for jeans that fit!!

Sometimes fit changes from year to year. Wonder if Zappos could be old models? I've found jeans measurements there like cited pant length/width different from ones on other sites. Fit can also vary depending on country of manufacture. Maybe you can also try Amazon and eBay? So frustrating!!!
Yes, often the same brand and style...same exact thing...fit differently even at the same store. My DSIL tries every one of the items in her size, though supposedly identical, to find the one with the best fit for her. She swears they vary, probably for the reason Glory mentions. She also tries on all the shoes available in the style and size she wants and buys the best fitting right and left shoes of the group. Drives shoe salespeople up a wall but she's rarely unhappy with the result.

YES. So many times because I love duplicate purchases when I find something that works. I have read that they cut many pairs at a time on the machines and it alters slightly going down the pile. Who knows but it is such a drag especially with jeans. But keep trying because they are not all the same.

So, I bought Defined Waist Levis at Zappos and love them. I was going to duplicate them and give up the jean hunt. I found the same color and size of Levis at Kohls for $15 less. I tried them on, and they fit very differently. So differently, in fact, I left them at Kohls.

Anyone else have this issue? Do the same brands run differently depending on the store you buy them at?
