Hello - I usually just read and don't participate, but had to put in my two cents on this topic!

I used to be on the fence, going between drugstore and salon quality. I'd use Pantene, mainly. Found Aveda to be very drying on my hair and irritating to my skin. Then I tried Kerastase and that was good, although not enough to sway me ($$$). About a year ago, I started using Davines OI shampoo and conditioner, along with the OI milk and beauty potion before blowdrying.

Holy cow.

I will never go back. Softness, volume, amazing smell, nourishment ... it's a fabulous product for all hair types. I have fine hair, but lots of it. The OI line is AMAZING.

If I use drugstore shampoo and conditioner now, my hair feels like straw and is limp and difficult to style. With the Davines, I can rough blow dry and it falls in waves (okay, my cut has something to do with that, too). Seriously good stuff.

I have baby fine hair and I color it. I have been using Paul Mitchell Color Protect shampoo & conditioner for quite some time & really like it. I try to catch it on sale. Today I bought a liter pack (a liter of shampoo & a liter of conditioner) at the salon for $35 total. That same product is $26.95 per bottle at CVS. I checked the price at CVS earlier this week & again today after going to the salon.

I have used plenty of low-priced products in my life - Herbal Essence, Suave, etc. Many shampoos strip my hair and many conditioners weigh it down. I like what I'm using now & am not likely to switch anytime soon.

I had a lot of hair fallout dryness and brittleness with drugstore brands and lots of hair in the drain. Switching to salon brands I no longer have a dry hair problem, no more breakage and no hair in the drain. Salon brands are milder sulfate wise ( probably lesser concentrations) and my hair is in much better condition. Stores like BeautyBrands and Ulta offten have sales where you can get salon brand for near drugstore cost.

Not all people have the same results and some people can tolerate drugstore shampoos better than others. I also noticed drugstore brands have improved a great deal but sadly I still experience greater hair shedding when I use drugstore brands.

Everyone is different but I find that salon brands are much healthier for your scalp and hair.

I use a variety of shampoos and instead of conditioner I use this daily keratin treatment http://www.amazon.com/Keratin-.....d_sbs_bt_4

It helps with holding in the color as well as making it smoother.

Currently I am using a shampoo from Aveeno which is nice. I too like the Organix line and have used a couple differnt ones.

Once a week or once every two weeks, I use a 'conditioning cleanser' called Hair One instead of shampoo. It's supposed to be comparable to WEN but very reasonably priced. It's available at Sally Beauty. It leaves my hair feeling incredibly soft.

I think a big reason why salon brands are different is that they don't have any parabens which can build up in your hair and weigh them down.

Have you ever tried using baking soda and apple cider vinegar? There is a different ratio for everyone so it takes some fun chemistry to perfect it. http://www.pioneerthinking.com.....ampoo.html
I started using it thanks to Maya! When my hair is very long I only shampoo the roots and condition the ends to save materials.

You have beautiful hair. Good luck! Sorry for the horrible english

I use Bumble & Bumble styling products... sort of. Their hairspray and hair prep. Everything else, from shampoo to conditioner to mousse, I use organic. The salon brands are generally heavy on the synthetic fragrance and that makes me ill. The drugstore brands are lighter on the frangrance, but can still be heavy. I cannot use Pantene; it makes me throw up. I'm using Collective Wellbeing shampoo/conditioner, which leaves my hair nice and shiny and also John Masters' "beachy" styling product.
Hi Diana, I think that Lyn eludes to the answer when she says " the only thing that works"...I think that it depends on your hair and the shape it is in. It sounds as if you take good care of it by not over doing it with heat. That alone keeps it healthy.

Personally, the only difference I see is when I use WEN and that is that my hair seems to stay cleaner longer . Otherwise, I use whatever I feel like at the moment. I really like Pantene and it gets excellent reviews from Allure and readers ( my mini Bible for that ). I even went through a phase of using Dr. Bonner's Castile soap. As you get a bit older you may need to worry more about moisture and start thinking about conditioner or a more moisturizing shampoo.

I think that we live at a great time in history when drugstore stuff is fabulous...even make up. The technology and availability of raw material has improved so we have so many more alternatives.

PS...I love it that you buy stuff everyone once in a while to support your hairdresser ! You have such a wonderful heart and generous soul. So, even if it does nothing for your hair it is a beautiful gesture of generosity of spirit. That is worth more than beautiful hair.

Ha, I hated organic chemistry! But that makes a lot more sense if cetearyl alcohol is a fatty alcohol that it would be in conditioner.

O, I do not know about lecithin but would also like to learn about it! That is interesting about Redken, I actually used to use it when I was in high school because we had a family friend that worked in a salon for a few years back then and she'd give it to us. My current Stylist does not carry Redken products so I haven't used them for years. She is Italian so carries a lot of European brands actually (as well as some American, and she uses nexxus products in the salon).

I did go through a baby shampoo phase actually, but the thing is it is really weak, almost watery, and I had to use a ton of it to get my thick hair clean! But it is a good choice for those who need gentle shampoo.

Timely topic as I need to top up on my haircare products soon.

Nobody mentioned lecithin yet. It would be good to know what those amongst you who understand this stuff from the scientific pow think. The stylist who recently did my hair said this ingredient ensures the hair gets a lot of moisture. I have very naturally dry hair, so I always prod hairstylists for their advice. He also said Redken beats everyone in haircare, and given that he lives in Europe but raves about American professional products (over e.g. Kerastase) which are very expensive here, I guess they must be good. I've even located them at one shop here - and they are pricey. So I'm now combing through drugstore shelves in search for something with lecithin.

My previous hairstylist back in the UK used some professional line based on argan oil and I purchased some stuff in the past. Divine, definitely the best stuff I used, but pricey, and he said that if I go for one product only, it should be conditioner. I'm currently squeezing the last drops form the supplies I brought with me.

Baby products seem to be a good option fir shampoo at least. Not all are the same and just because they say "perfume free" doesn't mean they are not loaded with other bad stuff. My husband is very sensitive when it comes to shampoos and the UK brand called "Simple" was his favorite, not even some organic products with bigger price tag work.

I am allergic to a lot of stuff, so I have to choose carefully. I tend to stick with Neutregena color free, dye free shampoo and Pantene conditioner. They work really well for my hair. I only wash my scalp, and I only condition the ends. Weird, but works well for me.

I have tried from Suave to the really expensive salon brands. This combination works best for me. Every few bottles of shampoo, I will buy a small bottle of other shampoo just so my scalp doesn't get too used to the shampoo.

Each strand of my hair is baby fine. We actually measured it with a micrometer at work as part of a six sigma project (long story!), and it was about 1/4 the width of everyone else's. but, I have A LOT of it. My hairdresser books an extra 15 minutes onto my appointment because it takes her so Long to dry it.

Krista, that's interesting! I was curious so I looked at the ingredient list for the conditioners I currently have. ALL of them (I have aquage color protect from the salon, john frieda red color care, and a sample of something called bioluxe (which I don't like) from the drug store) have cetearyl alcohol listed as the second ingredient (after water)! Unfortunately they don't state the percentages so it's hard to compare between the different brands, but I had no idea that conditioner even contained alcohol!

April, I can't do sulfate free products in general, as I am allergic to sarcosinates, which are often used to replace the sulfates.

Anna, Pantene has something called "Ice Shine" shampoo which is silicone free. I like it quite a bit as I think it makes my hair feel very clean and light, so I think you may be on to something with the no silicone. I think the associated conditioner does have dimethicone but it's a much smaller amount than other brands.
I wash my hair everyday but I only use shampoo once a month or so. Mainly because I stay away from sulfates in most shampoos. I find it drying and it strips color out pretty quickly.

I generally buy the conditioner that's on sale in the big bottles since I use a lot of it. Because I don't use sulfates, I stay away from silicone in conditioners. I'm not hardcore about it though but if there is silicone (dimethecone on the label) I try to keep if low on the ingredient list. The reason I avoid it is because the silicone needs the detergent/sulfates to wash out.

My hair is shinier and healthier than it has ever been,
Diana - I should have clarified - the higher level of alcohol in drugstore products makes them more drying, which is why salon products make your hair feel so luxurious, they don't dry out your hair as much. There is alcohol in the salon products, but much much less.

I use a quite expensive body-milk. I don't mind spending more on mosturizers and make-up, especially foundation. However, I go for drugstore when it comes to shampoo and other hair products, for some reason.

I thinks it's because I use a lot of it (wash daily) and so far it looks nice, shiny and healthy (and I'm ironing daily these days because it's the ONLY way to wear my bob right now). I think I use Pantene Volume for fine hair. I use a spray conditioner (no rinsing) that conditions and disentangles without getting it dirty and greasy, since I have a tendency to that.

I would go for chemist brands if I had health issues though. I think salon shampoos are expensive just because.

PS: I cut my hair about twice a year, and go for the short bob once a year as well, which I guess helps keeping it healthier too.
I use Pureology shampoo and conditioner, the volumizing line for color treated hair. Whenever I try to get away with using something cheaper, my hair stylist can always tell!

But my hair is really short, so a little goes a long way for me.

The Organix shampoo smells great in the shower, but I don't find that the scent 'lingers' once hair is rinsed. In fact, my DH also uses the Organix ginger shampoo as well, so it can't be too bad - as he's not one for 'frou frou' smelly things.

Only reason I can recommend Kerastase is because that's what they were using in one of my favourite hair salons. I wouldn't have bought it without trying it first. Expensive stuff. Intriguing what Tanya has said - perhaps some of the L'Oreal products out there might be just as good? I'm going to look into this for sure!
Wow, there's lots of great advice in this thread already!

Lyn, I'm glad you've found something that works! I hope they never stop making your shampoo. I think I'm lucky to have unfussy hair, so long as I don't use anything that I am allergic to. (So you know how the new thing is sulfate-free shampoos? Well, I am allergic to the thing they use to replace the sulfate. So not good.)

Mo and VC, I also tend to go for more expensive conditioner. I kind of think that shampoo is just soap after all! I think my hairdresser uses Humectress as well - I like the feel and it smells really nice. Maybe I should get a bottle for a treat.

Louise, thanks for the recs. I'll check those brands out - that is around the price (higher end drugstore) that I'm happy to pay regularly for. I don't ever blow dry or heat style my hair either.

Zap, you have amazing hair! The Herbal Essences must be doing its job.

Janet, I am so with you on the smell. I pretty much have a bloodhound's sense of smell and always smell the products before I buy them these days. I had a really expensive Italian conditioner from the salon that I had to toss because it had such a strong perfumey smell that lingered so much I'd get a headache from having to smell it on me all day.

VC, thanks for the product recs. I have seen the Organix line in the drugstore but I haven't tried it because they smell a bit strong to me - does the smell linger a lot? It's also good to know that Kerastase works - I always wonder whether it's worth the very steep price!

Krista, that's interesting about the alcohol! So does that make the drugstore products less concentrated? Or more drying?

Tanya, thanks for the link! It looks really helpful. I have always wondered about whether there was a huge difference in formulation, because the ingredient lists sometimes look suspiciously similar!
I buy sulphate free shampoo and conditioner at Winners (TJ maxx) that is not available in the drug stores but I'm not sure if it is salon either. I find it works well and doesn't dry out my hair.

I have a spritz on leave in conditioner I bought at the salon that I really like but searched and found it online for half the price of the salon so I may order it.
I have used shampoos and conditioners all over the price spectrum: from super-cheap Suave (they make an excellent clarifying shampoo) through brands like L'Oreal and Bumble&Bumble to super expensive Kerastase. In general I find little difference if one chooses carefully.

I am a big fan of Paula Begoun of Cosmetic Cop: http://www.paulaschoice.com/beautypedia/
She reviews a lot of products in a fairly scientific manner (she looks at the research about the ingredients vs. outrageous claims by the manufacturer) and I really trust her. According to her, hair products are among the most repetitive ans similar formulations between super cheap and super expensive ones. Also, many companies are owned by different ones. For example, Kerastase is owned by L'Oreal and a lot of their products are virtually identical.

So I definitely save my money with the hair products.

I had this conversation with my hairdresser a few years ago. I was buying L'Oreal products from his salon and I wanted to know if the drugstore L'Oreal products were any different because I was starting to find it pricey. He said that generally drugstore products have more alcohol in them, and I compared the labels on a salon bottle vs a drugstore bottle - and it's true. That being said, he also said that there were lots of products in the drugstore that you could buy that would be just fine on your hair. I think it comes down to preference and budget!

Since that conversation, I have purchased my shampoo and conditioner from the drugstore (John Frieda Brilliant Brunette) as well as the volumizer I use to style it (Bedhead something or other). The one concession I make is that I do buy a salon-level anti-frizz serum that I put onto my hair each day because I blow dry and straighten my hair most days of the week. It's Kerastase Nutritive Oleo-Relax - it's pricey but I haven't found anything at the drugstore that can even slightly compare. Besides, I only buy 2 a year, so it's a worthwhile investment to me! I also do not color my hair so I think the price and the strain of the heat-styling works out in the end (at least that's what I tell myself!)

I'm with Mo on this - I use drugstore shampoo and salon-ish conditioner.

My current favourite shampoo is the Organix line. There's a bunch of different varieties for every hair concern, and I am liking the ginger shampoo right now. They are priced between $6 and $8 at most grocery stores and drugstores. This line has good styling products as well.

For conditioner, I'm using Malibu Hard Water conditioner because I live in a hard water area. It's a hard-to-find line, even in salons, so I just order it online from Amazon. It does a beautiful job of helping prevent hard water damage to my hair. Better than anything else I've tried (other than washing with distilled water, which can be a hassle at times).

Not sure about protecting colour - I am certain there are good drugstore brands for this as well.

I have tried various drugstore conditioners, and I do feel that some of the salon brands or specialty brands do a better job. Some of the Kerastase conditioners are amazing. Ridiculously pricey - but it's that good. Try the Chroma Riche or or the UV Defense in summer. No comparison to a drugstore conditioner, imo. Shampoo? I don't find that much (if any) difference!

Just as an aside - finally got to try out the 'link' button ....but it didn't work...so no links to the products for now, until I figure out how that link button works. :)

One of my biggest criteria for shampoo/conditioner is that I have to like the smell!

I've used things all over the price spectrum, and in general don't notice a huge amount of difference. I also tend to wash my hair every other day, rather than every day.

Right now I am using a salon product -- the Bumble & Bumble "quenching" shampoo -- because my stylist recommended a sulfate-free product after I had that straightening treatment in December (which, by the way, is still doing the trick nicely all these months later in keeping my hair easy to manage). I like it a lot, and don't even use conditioner, just the spray-on "7 Seconds" smoothing product or "It's a 10" spray, both of which get rid of tangles and protect from heat styling.

When I need a little more conditioning, I use Humectress too -- been using it for years! My sister owned a hair salon for 20-something years, and she would always bring my mom and me Humectress when she would visit, so I don't think I've ever actually purchased it!

I use Herbal Essences. I really don't see a difference between that and the salon brands I used years ago. I consider my hair pretty healthy. I don't use any other hair products. Herbal Essences Shampoo, conditioner ( only on my ends) and a bit of gel if I put my hair up.

I flit between L'Oréal EverPure and Goldwell both for coloured hair, I'd say they're both high end drugstore brands. I've tried morrocanoil shampoo and conditioner (salon brand) which I loved but at £16 a bottle I found I couldn't bear to use it! I get red/ brown semi permenant hair colour done every 2 months at the hair dressers. They are always surprised how well it lasts. They say my hair is very strong and healthy which we put down to lack of heated applicances. I always air dry never with a hair dryer and never use straighteners. I guess the colour specific shampoo and conditioner must help too x

I use drugstore brand shampoo, but salon conditioner. Pert 2 in 1 or some other such similar conditioning shampoo. Nexxus Humectress conditioner for decades now. I color occasionally, but not regularly. It's been at least 2 years now since I've highlighted, but the grays are winning so I might start again lol. I have healthy hair. I also don't do much heat styling. I blow dry the bangs some days for a minute or two. Just this last year I started playing with a curling/straightening iron here and there. Only twice a week I'd say. I don't wash every day anymore, more like every 3rd day, with just the bangs washed in between.
