Without reading the other replies, here are my responses:

Whenever buy anything online, when I get to that spot in the checkout that asks for a code, I pretty much always do a quick search for codes.

I get a lot of automatic emails notifying me of sales. I don’t think they prompt me to buy, but I might browse. I am getting a bunch right now because my birthday is coming up. One of them is from a place where I’ve had things in my cart, waiting for prices to come down, for a while, so I’ll probably go ahead and get those, but the rest aren’t for things I’ve been thinking of.

You didn’t mention them, but I think outlets are my preferred “sale” types. During the years we lived in Florida, I developed a Nordstrom’s Rack habit that I’d never had before. I stopped before we left, and am glad. I don’t need that many clothes. I was surprised that you mentioned recently that you can see that my earlier things were better quality—good eye, but it also confirms for me that all those purchases weren’t the best idea.

Really interesting range of responses- I have enjoyed reading them. I am not a good stalker - I will wait and have a cool off period which can go for me and against me.

For a while I thought being in sale constantly meant that a retailer was going under soon - but I know some of the retailers that do this are very profitable.

What I do worry about - is me buying two dresses on clearance sale from a retailer closing up shop means two less sales for retailers staying in business. I am buying at cost price or similar - it can be a bit of a cycle can't it!!

I am a mood sale shopper — I normally don’t go out of my way for sales (especially with the usual retail suspects like BR, etc), but I love a good discount so if I’m in the right mood with time on my hands, I will browse the Rack or Off Fifth or the like. I’ve gotten some gems that way over the years, and it allowed me to add designer pieces to my wardrobe at more reasonable costs. I do look for discounts when there is a designer or retailer that appeals to me but seems a bit steep (I waited until a sale to buy a sweater I had been eyeing from Sarah Pacini, for example). And if there is a sale on a particular style of jeans that works well for me, I will often take advantage of it to stock up a little bit (for instance, I duplicated my AG Harper straight jeans in grey and black when I found them on sale at Amazon, and the 7FAM Dojo bootcut jeans in a light wash at NAS this year).

But if I truly fall in love with something and I don’t think it will last in stock until a sale, or it’s a brand or item that never really seems to go on sale, I’ll happily pay full price.

I’m not usually too bothered by seeing something I paid full price for go on sale, IF I have gotten some use of it already. It DOES bother me if it’s an item that hasn’t even gotten worn yet, as in the case of some NAS items over the years. I’ve usually gotten price adjustments for those items. I’ll be watching this year as well, since I bought three coats/jacket, which won’t get worn until October at the earliest!

I think about this a lot... I used to only ever buy things on sale or second hand, but recently (with a higher income) I've been buying more items when they first come out.

A lot of my essentials come from Banana Republic, which used to have 40% off codes every few weeks, so I felt like a sucker if I bought something at full price. But, I've noticed that their nicer items are now excluded from the discount, and I think this is a good trend. No more roller coaster feeling, hopefully no more retail race to the bottom. So I've tried to build my tolerance for buying their clothes at full price.

Most of my wardrobe is bought full price from stores that don't do a lot of sales: Everlane, & Other Stories, Uniqlo (mostly collaborations that sell out quickly). & Other Stories seems to make things in smaller quantities, then discounts them at the end of the season if any are left. If I'm on the fence about something, I wait until it's marked down, but I know I might miss the chance.

For splurge-y items, I only buy on sale. Like people mentioned, I'll wait for a specific designer item to migrate from Net-a-Porter to the Outnet or stalk it at Nordstrom Rack. Or, second hand (usually online these days). I've had pretty good luck with tracking down special items a year or two after I first saw them. And designer jeans, I always wait for a discount code or sale. I'll follow their prices across several stores.

My general shopping habit is to pin things I like to a pinterest board, and then mull it over for weeks. I go back through the pinterest board and see what still holds my interest. It also lets me stalk prices. I tend to buy things weeks or months after I first see them, so, very few impulse buys. But, having it all on one pinterest board can lead to a different type of impulse buy, in a way, where I see it so often I feel like I need to have it.

My strategy is similar to Irina's. A lot of the brands I like would be out of reach if I paid full price for every item, but 20 - 25% off makes them accessible.

1) I do look for sales and promotions; I use a browser plug-in that scans for promo codes and I'm not averse to signing up for promotional emails to get a discount on a specific item. It's easy enough to unsubscribe afterwards, and I use a secondary email address for commercial/promotional stuff anyway.

2) I am more an end-of-season clearance shopper than a pre-season sale shopper. Seasonal clearance is especially great for replacing gear and basics, categories where I'm not so interested in novelty. I do keep an eye out for samples and seconds sales from smaller slow fashion labels. My two Elizabeth Suzann pieces were both from a seconds/samples sale; same with Only Child (below). Almost all of my Patagonia gear comes from their clearance sales, or is bought secondhand. I love REI's "garage sales" (mostly customer returns) for deeply discounted nearly-new gear.

3) I guess I have pretty decent luck, because I keep doing it! My size and preferred colours do sell out, but I try to approach FOMO/sold out items with equanimity. It's not like I'm buying things I absolutely need, and I'm rarely under any sort of time pressure to acquire a particular item, and things don't disappear from the face of the earth once they're out of stock. If I like something enough, I'll keep an eye out for it on eBay, Poshmark, etc. But most of the time I just put it out of my mind and move on, money saved. Something else will come along.

4) I also treat waiting for sales as a built-in cooling off period. Telling myself, "If it's still there by Labor Day, Boxing Day, etc" is a good way to figure out if it's a passing fancy or something I'll really be able to use.

My answers:
1. Yes, I actively look for sales. I pretty much only check the sale items on my favourite shoe website ( Styletread) and my favourite boutique chain ( Hartleys). Partly because several supposed high quality items have not lasted that well so I resent it if I have paid full price- like thank goodness I had got the Arche sandals on sale since they needed gluing much too soon.
2. I hate spend and save! I’m usually wanting one item so don’t want to get more and hardly ever fall for that- last time was 2 identical black tops in 2018. I have now worn each over 30 times but would have preferred just one I think.
I like after-season sales so from maybe a year earlier, because I don’t buy trendy stuff, I like what I like and if it’s available at a low price all the better.
3. Yes absolutely I still like them and fit them later, because I generally love them when I buy them unless they’re a boring essential like the 2 identical black layering tops- bought to allow tunics or toppers to stand out.
Other thoughts: I do need to be careful of sales goggles but with the help of YLF ( Angie’s articles and the forum members) I am much better in recent years. Mainly with shoes where I used to be tempted by higher heels than were comfy, since I love shoes so much.
I still buy the occasional full priced item but it’s rare. No need when I find lovely sale items easily.

I am out today so will respond in more detail later. Definitely a huge variety of types of sales and ways to tackle them. And with the retailers that are mostly in sale mode- you do feel mad not buying items at the discounted price.

I am probably a better thrifter than sales shopper. My size often is sold out or very thin on the ground - especially for shoes.

Mr Minu and some friends often tease me that I have champagne taste on a beer budget As my budget is quite limited but thankfully I tend to wear classic pieces, I often a bargain at the end of the season and use them on the following year. The main point is that the quality is the best that I can afford and can last me for a very long time. I often buy online in various outlets, which can be a tedious process but it pays off at the end, usually filter the colours of my wardrobe and sizes and sort the price (ascending, of course ) . If the size is not available I just move on as I just think it wasn't meant to be!

Since last year, I also prepared a no-buy shopping list and it is quite helpful!

I have to say I see your point, cat2. And I don’t like shopping a store like Bed Bath and Beyond without a coupon or something for that reason.

Anyways, I’m back to say I prefer to be where there is no jostling, and full price is kinda worth it to me for that reason. Like, I don’t shop on weekends for anything and don’t do Black Friday - the deals are amazing, but it’s also a good way to get shot around here (!!)

1) I do look for sales. Mostly what I'll do is see something I want, but if I can wait on it I do. Most brands have discounts on a semi-regular basis so if I'm not in a hurry and can risk the thing not being available later I just wait for the sale. That way I'm not buying what I wouldn't buy otherwise, but I'm looking for a better offer.

What I try not to do is see a sale and look for something to want just because it's on sale. That makes much less sense. It gets me sometimes though. That's where the NAS grabs me, because it's about the future and what I "might" want and I fall into the grab mentality every time. I don't do that nearly as much for other sales, which might be one more reason for me to try and pay less attention to NAS next time around.

2) So, my preferred type of sale is the "20% off everything type". That's what I wait for on the things I've predetermined interest in. My least favorite type, which I'm most likely to ignore, are end of season sales. I don't like to buy something I won't wear for a year and usually by end of season I'm much more interested in scouting what's new for the next season.

3) Yes, I do have good success with those thoughtful sales purchases. I've made mistakes though for sure on the "looking for something to want" type sales purchases. Something for me to be aware of and try to minimize.

Thanks for the thoughtful questions!

I try to buy everything on sale. I shop off season for the next season, and buy from brands with dependable quality pieces. I am not troubled if there are orphans, as within a year or two something will pop up to make them work. I don’t do Final Sale, as even the most dependable designer will have units that don’t quite fit the same. I almost always find what we need. If not, I fill in the few gaps with full price merchandise. I don’t see the point of paying more than I have to for our clothing.

I almost always wait for underwear to be on sale as part of a store event before I buy it. That type of sale is really the only kind I'm interested in. Sizes and colours are available , as opposed to end of season markdowns that always seem like a collection of sad leftovers to me. The only end of season sales I take a peek at are in housewares and home decor at places like Anthropologie . The rest of it is a huge turnoff, and I never go near the big clothing sales racks.

Like everyone else, I'm conditioned to make sure BR and Gap are having their usual "sales" before paying for the item, although I gather BR is moving away from that system now, thankfully.

I don't follow sales but if I'm pleasantly surprised by one I'll buy brand and style specific things that I know work for me like sneakers, underwear, t shirts. I check the discontinued sales on my sport type outerwear because the brand and styles I like are ridiculously expensive and happily, I often like the older colors better. I never think to look for discount codes!

Preferred sales model is 30%, and the only interesting rewards points are the ones I get anyway with my credit card.

Excellent sales satisfaction because I only buy things I would buy anyway at full price.

Only other thought might be that if anything, I steer away from department store sales because it's rare the things I would want are included but I'm vulnerable to the allure!

I put anything I’m interested in on my Nordstrom Wish List. Most will eventually be marked down (40% off), price matched (usually 25% off), or sell out. This method helps me from making impulse purchases as I contemplate whether I really want/need it.

I currently have over a dozen short sleeve performance tees on my Wish List. At some point those that don’t sell out are likely to be marked down from $29 to $19. Of course, I have a few things there that may never be marked down since it’s been a year or two, so I will have to decide whether I will buy them on a Double Points Day. That’s what I did with my Brooks Addiction shoes which are excluded items on shoe sites.

I do buy almost all my clothes on sale. Two reasons: there is always a sale at some point and I can purchase higher end brands that are outside of my price range at full price.
This year I bought a pair of shoes and a bag at full price just to see it go on sale a couple of months later. Doesn’t make me feel good.
I like end of season sales, I know what I was missing or need to replace for the next season. I don’t have a desire to wear what I bought right away.
I avoid final sales, I almost never buy anything I can’t return at any price. Trying to avoid sales goggles and asking myself if I would buy a garment at full price doesn’t work for me.
For example, when I buy jeans my budget is up to $150. I would prefer to buy from a few designer brands whose jeans fit me well. But I would not pay a full price of $250 or $300. It is outside of my comfort zone and it doesn’t matter how much I love it. I can either choose to wait for a sale or to buy cheaper jeans.
I don’t buy something extra because it is on sale. I hope to buy either a better quality item when sale price puts it in my budget or to get the better price on something I already decided to buy.

Suntiger is right - there is always a sale! It is a big game, and I will cheerfully admit to being caught up in it at times. What can I say, I’m trained like a lab rat! Some stores I shop almost always have 30-50% off, like Banana Republic and J. Crew (not sure if this will change post-pandemic). But to me, it’s silly to pay full price when I know there will be a significant markdown/offer within days, if not hours. They know their customers expect it - the full price isn’t the price they expect to sell at. I do actively look for codes and I have a separate e-mail address for shopping offers.

I prefer pre-season sales, like Nordstrom. I love shopping NAS. I don’t know how much money I really save (would I buy it if it wasn’t at NAS?) but I love trying new brands and styles out, it’s exciting. I often buy higher end items then I would normally. I do save some money buying some basics for me and the family, though - things we would buy anyway.
Most of the time, I don’t deliberately shop sales unless it’s one of those constant sale retailers. I love a good bargain, but I shop what I shop for, and if it’s on sale, it’s a bonus. Angie says it has to earn a place in your wardrobe-I think that if I’m not willing to pay full price, it might not also be worth the closet space.

I am getting better and better at removing sale goggles, and so most of my sale purchases work the same as other purchases, or they go back. I won’t buy anything at final sale, ever. I have to be able to take it home and try it on there. I have definitely spent money on things mainly because they were on sale that didn’t work for me. It doesn’t matter if it’s a dress I picked up for 20 bucks or 200 bucks, it’s got to be equally good.

I also find the psychology of sales interesting. All marketing fascinates me - always trying to figure out what makes the humans tick .
I don't shop retail much anymore, but will wait for regularly scheduled sales to stock up on things like skincare. If I recall correctly, my last two retail wardrobe purchases were shoes and not on sale.
Which is not to say I don't like a bargain - second hand shopping is the biggest bargain around. I have had to train myself over many years not to buy because it is such a good deal (resale to retail ratio) and still make mistakes.

There's *always* a sale, it's just a game. I don't look for sales or buy/not buy whether things are "on sale" or not. I generally shop later in the season, just because that's when the weather happens here though.

That said, sometimes I have to buy things straightaway. With Athleta, if something is on sale it means just the tiny sizes are left. I'm not an xs or xxs, so I have to pay full price- no biggie.

I really hate going onto a site and I can't even browse without "put in your email for _% off." At least B&M shopping I can kinda tune out the signs. If something is worth buying, I'll buy it- tell me about the sale when I bring it to the register!

Also, don't bug me about your credit card. I'm not saving 10% if the interest rate is 29%. I'm not giving you my phone number for "rewards points." In the words of my late grandpa: don't give me S^¡+ and call it shinola. If you want customer loyalty Sell Nice Products!

Interesting questions.l do wait for sales if l have my eye on something that l don’t strictly need but would like .l also look at sales in more high end brands that l wouldn’t splash out on full price but as l have enough clothes now l find sales easier to resist than when l was younger and still had a lot of wardrobe holes.l don’t think sales buying is the best way to plan a wardrobe unless you have been stalking something at full, price. You can end up with a lot of orphans that don’t really have a place .l also hate the “faux”discounting that goes on with a lot of stores these days.Thers the stated price but there’s always some offer on so actually you would have to work hard to pay the full price so in actual fact the real price is the discount price and that winds me up!just say what the real price is straight off!

I like purchasing items on sale, but don't actively look to receive a discount and will pay full price for an item that I know will get lots of wear or I think it is fairly priced from the outset. For example, I like to wear Uniqlo heatech tops in winter, they do go on sale, but given they are cheap to begin with, I just buy them when I need an update.

It is very rare for me to shop local end of season sales, but given I am in Australia, I do shop overseas end of season sales, because that will be appropriate for the forthcoming season. My tartan blazer and shirt were acquired this way from JCrew in their Black Friday sale.

A discount of 20% off seems to be a reasonable discount without the items being end of season stock. I feel that both myself and the brand/retailer are benefiting from the discount when it is at this level.

I am not good with sales. I know you are supposed to save a lot of money by waiting for end of season/sale, but I never find my size or anything I like. I also don't like quantum discounts, I don't have use for THREE new trousers, only the one.
Edit: I did just buy two jeans at a sale recently! Lol, jokes on me.

High street retailers always have sales. O have been disappointed if my item is no longer in my size. And the items I have purchased at full price I have loved and were hewi. Even so, I don’t think the merch is worth full price

Outnet/RealReal—I still wait for sales, but the discount is pretty good relative to full price and approaches what I am willing to pay.

I tried asking myself if I would buy the item at full price…didn’t work since I very rarely buy clothing at full price.

Rachy - good point re the wearing from the Nordstrom sale. Yes things can change in six months.

Sloper - oh yes the loyalty card, website sign up, email spam....oh so many aren't there! I am not good at waiting if I really want something.

Brooklyn - yes that's an excellent point in Sydney. Here winter sales still give me six weeks of wear and summer more like 2-3 months often. You have had great success with the online special pieces.

I think I’ve been conditioned to wait for sales at some of the big retailers here. They are so frequent and you feel stupid when you pay full price and it’s discounted a day later. I like 20% off. It seems to occur frequently!

If I’m shopping on a discount retailer like YOOX or the Outnet I may wait for a further discount if there is more than one item available and I am planning ahead (don’t need it now). But I might pounce if it’s the last available and I really, really want it. In general I’ve had good success with these retailers because I often find something unique. I am picky. I don’t think I’m overly influenced by the fact that items are discounted, although obviously my budget and thoughts about value for money have a role in any decision to purchase.

I try not to do end of winter sales because I’m over stocked on cool weather clothes and there’s a chance I won’t like the style when winter comes around again. But I do look at “end of summer” sales because they happen in January and our warm weather goes on for sooooo much longer than that

1. Sometimes I wait for sales, sometimes not. Most vendors I use seem to have sales around the same times of the year - end of season, etc. and I'll get email notifications. Also, I usually first shop for the thing I want in my size, then decide if it is worth it to gamble on waiting for a price cut. At some level of brands, every vendor has the same price - the designers have deals with the stores NOT to cut their prices until late in the season - i.e. if I find an item - every vendor has it at the same price. So I can try to hunt for a better price but usually have to end up waiting for sale season. And sometimes, I'll get a loyalty "Just for You" type discount - but those are typically on full price items.

2) Don't think there is a particular model I prefer - just hopefully I find the sweet spot of my (larger) size being available on sale. Sometimes I'm super lucky and once something goes on sale, I've waited for the next tranche of markdowns and my size is still available. And with loyalty to certain vendors, sometimes I can get the extra 10-20% off on top of the sale price.

3) Yes I have success, as I mentioned above - hopefully I find my size at a good discount - I've waited and hoped and really want the item and pounce! I'm trying to stop the buying-just-because-on-sale thing. I've spotted the item first, then I wait/hope for a sale.

4) If I discover a new-to-me-brand I'll go to their own website -sometimes for giving them your email you get a discount. But not frequently, too much spam already!!

I do like the pre-season Nordstrom sale. The discounts are pretty good IMO and the wearing is right around the corner - as opposed to a year away with end of season sales. I guess that fits with the fact I don’t try to buy on sale, don’t wait for things to go on sale. It’s sort of too much gambling for me. I do like a clearance rack - or clearance store like Ross or The Rack because I’ve found gems. And they are easy access for me. It would maybe all be different if I were closer to the major department stores.

Yes I bet Slimcat - you would know what a true price should be. And I like clearance racks in store - often they don't have my size - and sometimes I do think "what were they thinking" but I have got some wonderful pieces.

N - interesting how sales aren't common in Japan. They seem to be more and more common here now...

Echo - I agree. It used to be winter sales here in July/August and summer sales in January/February with early new stock coming in as well. I knew in summer up to Christmas I paid full price, after Christmas sales were available. It made decisions simpler!!

I used to be tempted by sales goggles, but rarely found love with the things I purchased. Now I look for certain items or a certain style. I carefully consider what I want in a piece and how it will coordinate with the rest of my wardrobe, and I find just the right thing. Once I have found that thing, I DO look for coupon codes or discounts. I see if another store offers it for less. I'm not going to willingly pay more if I don't have to. If I cannot find a sale or a discount, I purchase it anyway because it is THE item I want, not something that a sale talked me into wanting.

Every once in a while, something will be outside my budget, and in those cases I will seek out the most similar item I can find, or I will look for end-of-season sales that might put it into my price range, but again, that's for one specific item, not just browsing sales for something that tickles my fancy.

I've mostly given up shopping at stores that offer all sorts of coupons and discounts and sales. It feels like playing a game to get the best price. I am looking for an item; I'm not interested in spinning the wheel to see what kind of discount I can get today and then wondering if yesterday or tomorrow would have been better. I actually prefer things that I know will never go on sale until they are almost gone. At an end-of-season sale, I feel like the discount is real and the item will be gone after that, otherwise it wouldn't have been offered at discount at all.
