The 12 fits now but is a wee bit loose around the bust; it's actually somewhat flattering on me now but will need some tweaking at the seamstress. I bought the 6 b/c I can amazingly zip it up but it is too small. It may be possible that I wear that one in a few months. If you're very young and very fit and naturally slim and you are willing to cut back your food a LOT and do a LOT of exercise, it might be possible, but generally over time I don't think you should expect to be able to lose more than a pound a week. So why not buy it, don't take the tags off, and see where you are in three months? If you haven't lost the weight, keep the dress. If you have, return it. If you really love the dress, buy it in your current size and the smaller size, and when 90 days is up you'll be able to keep whichever one fits better (unless you don't need another dress in your smaller size).
