Maya, oh, gosh, I never read comments on news stories, ESPECIALLY on our local newspaper's website (I live in the "Deep South" of the U.S.--can you just imagine!!). The mean, spiteful things that people say when they can be totally anonymous just makes me sick.

Ugh, what a terrible thing to hear on your way to get cupcakes! I live for cupcakes! I probably would have had a few choice words for the guy just for ruining my trip to the bakery!

Frances, that's absolutely terrible.

I don't read the comments on most news stories because doing so gives me heart failure. Today I broke my rule and read some of the comments on a story about how more Indian-Americans are running for political office, and the number of crazy racist scumbags that replied made me ill. It really made me wonder if this is what most people really think but don't feel comfortable saying in real life.

It also reminds me of an incident that happened yesterday on my way to get my cupcakes:

Two young men were standing at the intersection where I was while waiting to cross the street, and I overheard one of them say to the other, "I love watching all the b***es walking around half naked when it gets hot out. I can just sit in the park and watch their t*ts all day." Omg, my arm and hand were twitching as I resisted slapping him until his cheeks bled. I bet his mom is REALLY proud of him...

Michelle, thanks so much for your encouragement. That's why I love this community--it's so tolerant and supportive! Tanya, it's good to know that someone else is encountering these types of issues in their professional life too.

Maya, I had to laugh about your comment about more weirdos on the street than in this forum, which is true in my daily life too. But then I pause and wonder how much is being filtered out--cruel comments from random attackers, etc. An acquaintance of mine was recently killed in a freak bicycle accident, and when the local paper ran the story on their website (where readers are allowed to comment on news stories), the number of callous and insensitive comments was just shocking. It seems that no online community is safe from cowards who want to lash out and make cruel comments, so I'm assuming that the YLF Forum is not immune either.

I used to blur my face all the time, but then I started slipping up and also sometimes purposely showing my face. I go back and forth... I use my real first name but don't have any info about my last name here. I don't post pictures that would make me blush if my mother saw them. I don't post info about where I live or work (except in very general terms). I don't name names. All in all I don't worry about it a whole lot.

I still have the habit of blurring out my face but part of that is because I don't want to worry over my makeup, lack of, or facial expression when I'm doing photos.

I don't currently show my face, but it's more due to a shyness issue than a security one. And I'm usually too lazy to have styled hair and make-up when taking my photos. So I guess for me it's bashfulness + laziness = headlessness

Frances, don't feel bad about not posting your face. Part of the wonderful tolerance so evident in this community is the understanding that people have different comfort levels when it comes to the amount of personal information they disclose here. I could tell you all kinds of details about some forum members, from their favourite colours to the names of their partners and pets to some of their recent life stresses. There are others who I couldn't even identify by first name. Either approach is totally fine, so just do what feels right for you and works best with your lifestyle!

I've often thought about this issue, since I think I'd be the last to knkow if my picture was being misappropriated. But I decided to take the plunge and allow my face to be seen both here and on my blog. Part of this is a matter of expediency -- I can't crop pictures myself and hate asking others to do it for me, but part of it is also a sort of resignation that things get out anyway through other social media and I shouldn't waste energy fighting the tide.
I have disclosed fairly personal information on this forum and have no fears about the use it will be put to by members of the YLF community. That said, I wish there was an option to make a posting visible only to active forum members.

i very much try to limit the personal information i post but i dont think posting your picture can be that harmful, especially if it isn't associated with your name. angie is right; facebook is full of photos and if you are a member you have the ability to "untag" yourself but that doesn't change the fact that the photo is there and may be viewable by anyone, depending on the privacy settings of the photo's owner. even if you are untagged, the owner can still identify you. while i see the potential safety issues, i don't know of anyone that has had a problem with this yet.

Thanks for posting this inquiry, St4rrgrrl, because I sometimes feel almost a little rude about not posting photos of my face here. Most of the women on this Forum seem so wonderful, gracious, positive and supportive, so it's not really an issue with that. It's the other millions of creeps on the internet that I worry about. Despite the frequency of my presence here (a guilty pleasure), I do have a somewhat demanding work/life schedule and don't have time to keep up on all the different security measures I should be taking to keep devious people from hacking into my computer, accounts, photos, etc., so I just play it safe by not posting photos of the face. Also, I had a couple of creepy internet quasi-stalking experiences years ago that have made me cautious. And last of all, as others have mentioned, in my particular workplace, an interest in style and fashion is kind of treated as frivolous. Of course, we all know this isn't true, there is plenty of academic research supporting the importance of one's personal style, but out there in the workplace, I find I still get treated as some kind of vain bubblehead when I wear something obviously new or intriguing. Once when I wore a pair of t-strap heels (with trousers) to the office, my boss commented that they were "very Sex and the City," which I found insulting. It was not meant to be a compliment. And I work in a field with a lot of "brilliant" folks with inflated egos about the height of their intellectual superiority (as I'm sure most people do), so long story short, I try to keep my interest in style kind of low-key and private now so I can highlight and emphasize my hard work and work-related accomplishments instead.

I have wondered about this too. It is true that I would not want work colleagues to find me here, but I don't know how they would. It certainly wouldn't be *ahem* through a love of fashion. In any case photos of me are on the web for professional reasons whether I want that or not, and probably on people's facebook pages and whatever too. So my face is out there and until people can google faces, I don't see the harm. If I cut off my face, it's probably because I haven't done my hair.

I've shown my face in various forums via links (sometimes in password-protected album like folks do here).

However, I did so knowing that photos posted anywhere online can end up anywhere online.

While I don't think there's any super-need to be headless, I'm more protective on my blog for a variety of reasons -- internet searches being one of them.

[I recently had a bit of an "ewwwwwww" moment when I found one of my Flickr photos -- a closeup of my belt -- had been tagged by a Flickr account that featured LOTS of women-in-belt photos, with many of the women wearing little BUT the belt. Okaaaaaaaay. Makes the world go round, I guess, but still.]

Tanya, I think that it is too bad that your industry frowns upon fashion and style. You are not the first person in science who I've heard say that! I don't know if the information technology industry is all that excited about fashion, either, but I feel like this is a positive forum and there is nothing wrong with seeking ways to improve yourself and your image. That said, if someone did stumble across me here, they wouldn't find me doing anything "wrong." The worst offenses I commit are probably some grammatical errors and photos where I have goofy looks on my face!

People show faces on Facebook all the time - even when you don't want to show your face, your picture can be tagged onto facebook by someone else. There is no control anymore and face showing can be totally involuntary.

I have heard nothing about the risks in this vein so far, Amanda. As you know, I show my face too. On the blog no less - which isn't buried in the forum.

Hmm, I haven't heard of anything bad happening to anyone on the forum who shows their face, and I have been here for a couple of years.

The reason I choose to cover my face has nothing to do with safety, but with my work. I am trying to succeed as scientist in a pretty tough and male dominated field and I do not want anyone from work stumbling on my photos and recognizing me, since fashion interest is unfortunately still negative points there.

I hate to even have to ask this on such a fun forum, but I've noticed that some of us show our faces on the forum, and some of us don't. I'm just wondering--is there something that I should be worrying about with showing my face? Are there weirdos out there who do bad things with your image?
What are the risks?
