Pikolinos have a reputation for running narrow, so I won't even try them as I need footwear that runs wide, at least in front. I've also learned (well, maybe trying to learn) that if footwear isn't comfortable when I initially try them on, they will never be more than one or two hour shoes or boots. This is because my feet probably swell a little over the course of the day or while wearing the shoes/boots, so even if the footwear stretches some it may never stretch enough to make those babies all day shoes.

I love the boots you bought. They look great. I was going to suggest the potato trick but someone else already has. I never buy shoes unless they are comfortable from the beginning but I broke down and bought a pair last month. The left one was slightly tight and I used the potato trick and it worked!!!!!! I was so happy.

I really like the black with brown straps--olve the detail and the mix of neutrals.
Just do be careful to get your correct fit. I'm also in the narrow heel club and burdened with some bunion formation so now can't wear an overall narrow size as I used to. So shoes still tend to feel more "right" if they're snug, not slipping wobbly, but then after a while may start killing me in the forefoot region. I have to be sure I don't over-rely on stretching. I do try on my whole gamut of sock thicknesses-- I have LOTS of socks for this very reason--one type for one shoe or boot, another for another--and use an unseemly number of different insert-adjuster products. It keeps my feet happy.
Feet going numb is a bad sign!

I sometimes have that heel problem with boots too and I found a pair of heel cups sometimes solves the problem for me.

I have a high instep, and I have to say that if a shoe feels tight and hurts or makes me numb, it NEVER loosens up enough to feel good. So be very certain that they will be comfy !

Thanks Lyn67. I will certainly look up that link.

Suz--yes, some day I will have to take some time and just try on a bunch of different brands and see what's what. Oh to find decent salespeople who would know enough about what they carry so they could help! Oh well. That would make it fun. Otherwise, it's a slog.

Momo--yes, they re attractive aren't they.?

MissVee--well, those tags you see on them still are little adverts for the fact they've been scotchguard. If they stretch out, I will wear them until I feel too cold. But I used to wear my runners with socks until the mesh let in too much slush.

Ceit--I will likely wear them again this evening when I check in. We'll see how it goes. Last night my forefoot was pretty numb after an hour.

Well, I like the ones you went home with the best. I have a wide forefoot and high instep too, and a narrower heel and a lot of my shoes fit like that. That is normal, especially in Fryes also. The heel slippage is the room that allows you to get the boot on and off.

I am leery that your instep feels tight. I haven't had much luck with stretching shoes that way.

I much prefer the shorter black ones on you - they have a sleek, casual vibe to my eye. But I agree with the others - don't keep them if they feel too tight. And btw I wear my Pikolinos most of the winter, unless it's bitter cold or slushy.q

It's surprisingly common to have a narrow heel, Alana. Some companies (really high end one) design shoes with "double" lasts for this issue -- the heel is designed to be narrower than the forefoot. And it's a question of trying on lots of shoes to find a maker whose lasts will work for your foot.

It's the main reason I rarely wear: pumps without strape; flats (even higher vamp flats, unless they have laces); or slingbacks. I love a lower vamp shoe for its leg-lengtheing effects -- but they just don't stay on. Rarely I'll find a pair that (miraculously, to me) actually work. In some ways I am glad I live in an extreme climate. I can wear sandals (with straps that hold them on) in the heat, and boots/ booties in the cool weather -- where my heels do move up and down but the shoe will certainly stay on my foot.

I think this is one reason I have a really strong preference for flexible soled shoes. The heel slippage is less noticeable. I hope I never get arthritis because then apparently they tell you to wear firm soled shoes.

I think those Pikolinos should work until the snow flies. I wear booties pretty much up until then.

So sorry, and I so can so relate, Alana!:-(. I also have thicker calves, so it's all a struggle to finde great tall boots, for us. I am from the EU, so am not familiar with USA/Canada brands at all, but have read raves in Alison's blog about the DUO long boots for the thicker calves. http://www.wardrobeoxygen.com/.....-boots.htm

Hope this helps a bit!

ETA: I see the link may not work directly from here, so you better google "duo boots wardrobe oxygen" instead (this is what I did at least and was given the link, which then worked OK).

Hey, Alana. It may work out. . . I usually don't try my thickest socks first. I go for thinner ones, and gradually work up to the thicker ones. See how they feel with thinner socks. If still imprinting the knit onto your skin, then I'd have some reservations.

Suz, thanks.
You have loose heels, too? I always thought I was just weird. As I recall, the heels were unacceptably loose in the 10's (or whatever the equivalent European size was, because of course, these are sized with the European numbers.)

Sveta, yes, I am wearing them indoors with my socks to see if they stretch. I got the sales clerk to extend the return period from one week to two for me.

Laurie! Love the story! The lengths we will go to to get something we want!

Jasmine--I am grateful I can shop in the stores for boots. Your situaton sounds like a perfect nightmare to me.

RB-- that heel is called a cuban heel? (Heels have names? but of course they do, lol). You know these are growing on me. I am hoping they really do grow on me.

E! Another slender heeled lady. How about that--though, honestly, my feet are flat--and so extra wide--I could just have a regular heel--but thin in proportion to my duck feet. :)

Shevia--I am thinking of these as outdoor boots to minus 10 or so. I hope that is realistic. Does anyone know?

Beth Anne, I'm sorry to hear you have to go hunting again. Fortunately, I have a pair of terrific winter boots in a hiking boot style--so I can take my time and get a really great pair. Though, in this climate, when we can have snow on the ground by Halloween, one has to move fast when they come in. (Which is right now, though a fellow shopper in the store did comment that I was "eager for Fall." (In a way that suggested that was amusing to her.)

Firecracker--oh dear. Thanks for the information. When I took them off after an hour tonight, the top of my foot had the weave of my socks imprinted on it. Yeah, they are tight. They are fully refundable as long as I do not go outside in them. At all. It is supposed to cool down on Tuesday, so I'll wear them again, then.

Thanks everyone.

It's too bad the tall boots didn't work, Alana. I do like the look of them on you. I love the short ones that came home with you! The black and brown combo is really cool looking, and I like the versatility of combining the two neutrals. I believe the part of the foot you're talking about is the instep (the top of your foot above the arch, right?). I have a high instep that makes fitting some shoes difficult, too. Like others, I'd be wary of tightness. For me, if it feels just snug, like my foot is being hugged tightly, it will usually work out, because leather does stretch. (As long as the lining is leather, too.) If it feels uncomfortably tight, I take it as a bad sign, because those are the ones that haven't stretched enough for me in the past.

Awww; I'm sorry Alana. Fitting shoes is such a nightmare & knee high boots are even more complicated! Too bad they don't come in wide. :( I really like the short ones you got instead & think they'll go really well with your intended style. (And like Suz, my heel moves up & down at least a bit in pretty much every shoe I own, except for my Auroras, because they have an adjustable strap that goes around my whole foot, so when I buckle it tightly, it cinches the leather above my heel.)

I like the juxtaposition between the straps, tabs on the top and cuban heel echoing western and work boots; and the more delicate and feminine forefoot.

Hi Alana! First let me commiserate with you on the hassles involved in finding shoes that fit properly. I have large feet (size 10 US) and live in Japan, where my size is not commonly available (plus I have "loose in the ankle" fitting problem like you and Suz). I can occasionally find shoes that I like and that fit in specialty brick-and-mortar shops, but mostly I have to order online, which means lots of returns and all the frustration that goes with that. I have had the best luck so far ordering from Nordstrom (which I discovered via YLF: thanks Angie!), but like Canada, we don't get free shipping and have to pay hefty duties on shoes, so it's not ideal. So hang in there; you're not alone in finding it a major hassle to find shoes, particularly boots, that work!

It's a real shame that the long Brujas didn't work out for you, but I think the short Brujas 2 that you got look great on you (in fact, like Emily, I like them better than the short "original" Brujas and am now thinking about ordering them myself!). I worry though about the fact they are a bit tight across the forefoot. Will you be able to return them to the store for a refund if they don't stretch out far enough?

I feel your pain. When I lived up north, I desperately wanted an authentic pair of english riding boots. Scored some on ebay.. an absolute waste of money. I could not get them on my foot. Combination of a high arch, bigger calf - whatever. Even tried to ease them on using garbage bags over my feet and legs. At one point my feet went numb getting them stuffed in. So I know what you mean, and it's frustrating. I finally found a faux leather pair at Target at a reasonable price that at least filled my "want". Now that I live in Florida near the ocean, I don't wear boots. But man, I sure do still love the looks of them!!

I actually really like the slouchness of the tall boots on you - and for this style having them a bit wider in the calf is not a problem. Too bad the fit was off!:-)
I would be careful about boots to stretch. I have a wider forefoot and in my experience if they do not feel comfortable when I try them on no amount of stretching helps. Try to wear them indoors first with thick socks and see if they stretch enough for comfort while you still can return them. I wasted so much money on shoes where I hoped they stretch but it did not work!

I'm so sorry. I really feel your pain here. Knee high boots are one of my hardest items to fit -- they are so so particular, you have to fit them in so many ways....but it's always heartbreaking when you find a style you love and have to pass them by. If it will make you feel any better, I must have tried at least 15 different boots on at last year's NAS and had to send them all back. None of them fit properly.

I also wanted to say about the heel issue -- I don't own a single pair of shoes where this doesn't happen! Well, okay, that's a slight exaggeration. It doesn't happen with my Munro Robyn's or my Stuart Weitzman chelsea boots. But every other boot or shoe? Yup. It's because I have narrow heels. I just live with it. Some styles actually are made for that movement; you pretty much have to have it or you can't walk. As long as the movement is just up and down and not side to side, I think it is okay -- I don't get blisters with socks. But if you're dealing with other fit issues as well, that's no good, and you did right to leave them in the store.

I like the ones you chose. They have a sort of western / moto vibe. I do worry about the fit issue and encourage you to wear them around the house before the return window is over, just in case. They're quite different from the others but will be much easier to get on and off and I absolutely understand the need for that. Especially in the lunch room.

Emily--thank you! I like the straps too--the more I look at these, the more they remind me of a western cowboy boot--but without giving off that vibe at all to me.

Lisap--how funny that we can fall absolutely in love with something that may not look good on us. I love the slouchiness of the boot--to death. Oh well.

(As well--that is one weird picture of me wearing them in the store! Bobble Bust.)

love the feedback. Hard to "see" these through my disappointment, kwim?

I really like the short black w brown straps pair- a lot. They look so wearable with a ton of things, and would certainly be easier to pull on and off. I'm always skeptical of claims by sales people boots and shoes will stretch. I don't know- I think they have to feel pretty darn good right off the bat....what happens if the stretching and loosening never happens? But those are my own fears speaking.

I'm not in love with the tall boots on you, to be openly honest. I think it's the slouchy shaft that I'm not feeling....

The short black ones are fab!

How disappointing that the boots you wanted didn't work out. That is always such a downer. I like the ones you picked, though, best of the three you've collected. I think the shape across the top more is flattering and interesting than the other "bruja" style and the strap details give a bit of edge. Here's hoping they do give a bit as you wear them!

They came in Friday and Friday night I hauled my daughter down to the mall and tried them on. I took a pair of the socks I wear in winter. They are a bit thick.

I usually wear a 9 or 9.5 to accommodate a wide foot.
I could not get my foot down into the foot bed with a 9.
With a 9.5 they were tight across the top of my foot and there was no room in the calf at all for pants.
So, with a 10, I could stick a finger between the boot and my leg in the calf, but my heel would not stay put inside the boot. (I have this problem a lot.) I don't know if you can tell from the pics--but they came up right to the bottom of my kneecap.

But, most of all, the tall boot was very hard to put on. It took a while. I was actually afraid that I would be embarrassed in the lunch room at work by the amount of effort (and various chairs and stools needed) to help me get into these. As well, I need footwear I can put on quickly as I need to run and catch a bus after my shifts.

Who am I kidding? I am heartbroken.

Unfortunately, the store did not have the short version of the Brujas.

I did buy a different pair. These are the bruja2, apparently. They are black with chocolate brown straps and they have the same problem with being tight in the foot area that comes before the toes. (Does that have a name?) However, the salesperson assured me that they would stretch with wearing--or I could take them to a cobbler to have them stretched.

We'll see how these do. If they do get less painful, I will consider asking the store to bring in the shorter bruja1's --in taupe. But I think I may like these more--the top cuff of the bruja1's doesn't look right to me.

So, what do you think of these new boots?

I currently have one winter coat in black and I am looking for another.
