You gave him a wonderful home for the final year of his life. It’s never easy to lose a pet, but that’s a particularly awful thing to happen.</p> <p>Years ago, when I was in grad school and working and lived in a house with three other roommates (and three cats), a stray cat started hanging out around our porch. He was a pathetic thing — scrawny and didn’t seem well, but we fed him and gave him a little outdoor bed for a couple of weeks. He seemed so sad, we started calling him Morrissey (Smiths fans will get it). I finally got the chance to take him to the vet because he didn’t seem like he was getting any better, despite our efforts. He actually died at the vet’s office in the waiting room, in my lap.
