Joy that's awful! Why would somebody say that if they're a SA? Thank goodness she didn't earn that sale.

I can never think of snappy comebacks when someone treats me badly. Especially when I was in my 20's. I would squirm away and sulk. But now I would hope that if somebody spoke to me like that I would ask to speak to a manager immediately. Who is she to talk to you like that?

BA, I can relate. Once when DH was just out of grad school and we had moved to S. California with his first job, we were Christmas shopping in Newport Beach and inquired about a sweater. The SA told us bluntly that we couldn't afford it. I was in my 20's or I'd been better prepared. It hurt. The thing is, when I looked at the price we could afford it but would not want to give that SA the sale.

But that's what I love about THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. It's a fashion fantasy dream-come-true movie! I bought the special edition DVD, just so I could see all those gorgeous fashions over and over. I love the scene where Miranda throws her coats/bags on Andie's desk about 12 times, I think. To die for! But I don't get depressed watching this, I get a BOOST!

Wow Judy, I've never even been to Barneys. I don't know why, it's too imtimidating, along with Saks. Sounds scary, but one day I'll go in just for fun.

You're so right about those salesgirls. It reminds me of Devil Wears Prada movie. How does a secretary afford all those clothes she was wearing? You won't have me believe that the magazine just opened its closet for her everyday. Or how about those episodes of Friends where they wear really expensive clothes and have that massive apartment yet they don't have high powered jobs?

And celebrities don't even buy their clothes. They're all loaned to them or given to them for free. I'm not going to feel sorry for myself because I can't afford those clothes.

Judy makes a great point. Two of the best-dressed women I know wear a lot of Carlisle clothing, which is just gorgeous but so far above my price range it's just ridiculous. Lo and behold, I found a fab Carlisle jacket on the clearance rack at the consignment store on Friday for less than ten bucks!!

Well, Just goes to show, It doesn't matter where you live, where you shop or how much money one makes. You can't buy style or class. Part of being classy , be it a department store, or person is how you make someone FEEL...no matter how they are dressed or where they come from.

....Department stores like Bloomis are filled with sale associates who probably make less than you!!

Aww...BA, I feel your pain! How many of us haven't felt like that at one time or another, especially in some of the "snobbier" stores? It's good to remember that we are usually the only one having those thoughts about us, though!

I felt like that one day at Barney's. I'd only ever gone in to look at shoes, and then one day I walked upstairs because I was looking for a pair of jeans and Nordstrom's didn't have them. There were all these gorgeous clothes I'd only ever seen online. Not the super expensive stuff downstairs like Stella McCartney. But the Acne, Isabel Marant type things. The fabrics were so nice. The prices were very high, but I tried them on anyway. Ya know what? Nobody cared. I had fun! And ya know what else? I actually realized I preferred some of my "lower priced" things at home, in that they suited my needs better. THAT was a great feeling. One I wouldn't have had if I hadn't "braved" the dressing room :).

At the same time, it's nice to have that moment where you realize that you do desire to have better for yourself...not necessarily more expensive, but better quality fabrics, cuts. It's like raising the bar on what you allow yourself to have. I have found it's part of the education of what's out there vs. what I want vs. money to spend. There are ways to find wonderful stylish things and with thrift, ebay etc., less funding doesn't have to hold us back. I found the exact same 800 dollar leather jacket (that I paid $300 for on sale at Nordstrom's) brand new with tags on ebay for $39.00. Seriously, the exact same jacket!

With the new collaborations of designers with Target, H & M, etc. there is more opportunity for nicely designed things at lower price points, too. I have several things from Gap and Target collaborations, oh, Urban Outfitter too, that are really nice, with lots of details that often are what makes the price go up.

BA - it is totally understandable. I hate to admit this, but I always found Bloomie's ( at least in MA ) to be a bit snobby.

We all have difficult days and sometimes we just feel sad. That is ok. I feel that way sometimes about really expensive jewelry pieces, but then I think that if I actually saved up and bought one, then I wouldn't be able to get anything else. I also think it is a real anomaly that people dress that way..very few people can dress that way all the time. You don't have to look any further than the number of designers that are selling things on the shopping networks. Even though I worked in the corporate world in a city for a while, I found that type of dressing off putting and impractical. YOu just can't look that immaculate and function ; )

But we can rationalize all we want, sometimes we just feel bad.....hang in there !!!

PS - Bloomie's usually has some fab sales !! Every Spring, when I worked, I bought at least one of their sweaters at JCPenney prices! Cashmere, silk. I still have most of them.

Hang in there BA. Be what feels right to you inside and the more you look inside and match your outside with your inside, the less you'll allow the rest of the world to take you down. It *is* hard when you see something well made to then feel good about what you might be wearing. I can relate. I"m sorry you had this experience.

I can relate. The area I live in is very affluent and I'm surrounded by high-end shops as well. It depresses me even further because even if I *could* afford such clothes, very little of it fits me, because I'm too petite. Yes Bloomie's has a petite department, but it's target market seems to be little old ladies... too conservative for my tastes.

But I'm sure you looked amazing. Hold your head up high! I have been browsing in Bloomie's wearing my typical stuff and have had complements. It's not about the price or brand of your clothing, it's all in how you wear it....

Maya, I agree that the UES is definitely stodgy and not much good fashion happening on the streets. However midtown east side and upwards where all the good stores are like BCBG MaxAzria, Oscar de la Renta, etc. are in that area and if you want to go shopping there then you have to pick your outfit carefully. You can't walk into a store like that in sneakers, at least I can't. I'm much more inspired by street fashion in the village, east and west, soho, and tribeca.

BA, I know what you mean, and NYC can be sooo snobby too. I was walking by Louis Vuitton yesterday, and not that I was ever really paying much attention to LV, but their windows are so beautiful and every bag is so beautifully made. The quality and attention to detail is just so perfect that it really fascinated me. In my case I wouldn't feel right to carry one of these bags because then I wouldn't fit into my normal life anymore.

However, I think as long as you are ruthless when you shop in terms of buying only things that work for you, then there is no reason that you will not look fabulous. Also, if the foundations of your wardrobe are sound, why not save up for something special like a great coat or boots, shoes, a wallet?

One only need look at the plethora of stylish bloggers who wear Gap, Target and thrifted items, with splurges at Anthropologie, to see that style is more than just price point. There is something to be said for luxury, but you can also feel luxurious by finding diamonds in the rough and using a good tailor...

I live in NYC (well, I live in NJ but spend more time in NYC than in NJ), and have never felt bad or ashamed of my wardrobe, which is not by any stretch very high quality or expensive.

I used to work on the Upper East Side and let me tell you: It was the least stylish neighborhood I have seen in all of Manhattan. There is so much gear it's sickening, and lots of wealthy ladies wearing what is probably expensive yet totally hideous and poorly styled, matronly old lady costumes.

My ex-bf used to live in Harlem and i found the people there MUCH more inspiring, despite being far less wealthy. It was the most colorful neighborhood I have ever known. Love it.

People in NYC do wear beautiful clothes--but not all of them are expensive. I think it's a myth that money buys style, or even quality. I know plenty--and I mean PLENTY--of people here who do not have bushels of money but have a lot of style.

BA, I know exactly what you mean. I peruse the racks at Saks often just to drool (figuratively, of course) over the gorgeousness within. But I ALWAYS get inspiration from these high dollar fashion items and usually head straight to TJM, Marshalls, JCP, Target or Steinmart to scout out a similar look AND quality. It just takes patience to find the quality. Stealthy shopping is sometimes successful and very rewarding.

MaryK, there's no need for embarrassment! I've been know to stroll Saks with my Belks bag in hand. No shame, ladies! Be bold and go forth!

Ah, BA, hugs to you!

I know how you feel! I remember a few years ago I was on vacation in New York City and did some shopping at the flagship Ann Taylor store. Bought a bunch of cute stuff, spent more than I'd usually spend at one time, but was feeling really good about things. Decided to take a walk up Madison Avenue (I think it was Mad Ave -- one of the tony Avenues, anyway) and look at some of the fancier boutiques. The further uptown I got, the more embarrassed I got about my AT shopping bag! LOL It was a real lesson in how everything is relative.

Oh BA, I'm so sorry-((( I think we have all been there at one time or another. And I hear you, I seem to have inherited the very expensive taste of my godmother, but unfortunately do not have the budget to match. And at times it's very discouraging, especially because with the internet etc. we come into contact with so many luxurious and gorgeous things, don't we.

I totally agree about the expensive brands often having more unique detailing and more interesting colours available, and that there is just "something" about the cut and styles. I have noticed though that expensive doesn't always equal better quality (I think there was a blog post about this a while ago too).

And I know this probably doesn't help much at the moment: but I'm 100% sure you looked absolutely wonderful!! (I bet at least some of those people were admiring your outfit!!).

I usually shop at TJMaxx for good deals, Macy's, and splurge on stores like Free People and Armani Exchange. Well the other day I decided to step into Bloomingdales just to look around and I was so sad to see I couldn't afford any of the clothes there. I know that there are some really luxurious clothes out there that I could never afford but I don't come into contact with them regularly. But once you are within reach of beautiful garments you can totally see the difference in quality and fabric. It made me feel like a cheap knockoff and eventhough I was dressed in a really cute outfit it made me feel like everybody there was looking at me like I was dressed from the 99cent store. I know I shouldn't feel that way but it can be difficult living in NYC and seeing so many beautifully dressed people. It is so hard to compete with or even fit in. Sorry for the vent.
