Aw, sad thread reminds me of the only time I've been pickpocketed. In Venice, they took my address book, at the end of a long trip where I'd met new people. It was kinda fancy and had a magnetic closure, so it probably looked like a wallet or something. I had it in my backpack. When I got back to the hotel, the pack was open and the address book was gone.

I love Rome, and have never had any trouble there. Agree strongly about making sure you have pictures/ scans of key documents, and wear a smaller bag that zips.

If you have time, I highly the Villa Borghese. Incredible marbles and not nearly as crowded as other museums.

I have spent several weeks in Rome over years. The only attempts to pick our pockets were by cab drivers. One declared our brief trip would cost a too high amount, citing rush hour and his intent to turn off the meter. Uh, no. Another was arranged by the hotel to drive us to the airport for a fixed price and then at the airport, he cited 20 Euros more. We protested unsuccessfully and contacted the hotel on our return home. The cab driver denied changing the amount; the hotel reimbursed us.

In the city, looking purposeful and the usual bag under the arm securely seems an adequate deterrent in most cases. Be especially alert at crowded tourist gathering spots, like the Spanish Steps and the Trevi fountain as sometimes people work together to distract you. Fortunately, the streets are busy through late at night and we took many long walks after a late dinner with no issues at all, avoiding less busy or poorly lit shortcuts. Additionally, in the last couple of years, there is increased security around major squares, secondary to terrorist threats. I'm guessing that the presence of armed military personnel and vehicles serves as a deterrent to street crime, too.

On the shoes, Fausto Santini makes beautiful (though spendy) shoes and bags, with a shop near the Spanish steps. Don't think that they do custom ones, though. The sales associates there or in another high end shoe store might have some information about who does sell custom shoes. What a treat that would be!

Enjoy your visit; it is a great destination.

I love Rome! I was there for a few days before a cruise and want to go back. We never had any issues although we did have a girl try to help us buy train tickets - for a tip of course. I second the comments to just be careful and conscious of your surroundings. I also take passport copies when we travel.

I second Rick Steves. He has great info about all the art, and good tips about what to book in advance (crucial information for Italy in both cases).

Read Rick Steves! All kinds of great advice. On can find it online or his book on Italy at the library. Some things need to be reserved before you go. Wear comfortable shoes for walking on cobblestones.

I second having scans of your important documents on your phone. That can help expedite replacement documents. I'm usually okay in Europe with a crossbody bag, and common sense like not keeping too much cash in a pocket, etc.

I tell everyone going to Rome to go here: https://www.yelp.com/biz/tratt.....llaro-roma

I've known several people who've had their passports stolen by pickpockets and purse snatchers, but I've never known anyone who had one stolen from a hotel safe. I guess anything is possible, though.

Rachy - have you heard bad stories about hotel safes in Rome?

I usually make sure I have photographs on my phone of key documents and cards plus copies of them as well. I split my stuff up so might not take out two credit cards but leave one in the safe for example.

Keeping your eyes open and being aware is part of it - although I think my attempts at not looking like a tourist would be seen through easily by an experienced pick pocket.

Jules, that is exactly the scenario I have read about on countless sites. Being swarmed by teens or young women with kids.

Rachy, Darn, so take it all with you?

Those neck wallet things get sweaty. I hope the weather is cool enough for a jacket with an interior pocket.

I used a neck wallet that went under my clothes like a holster and kept my credit and debit cards there. I also carried some small bills of euros and a copy of my passport in my crossbody purse. That was probably overkill but Rome was really crowded and we rode public transportation. I don't know anything about bespoke shoes though

Rome is a wonderful city. Have a great trip

My parents travel regularly without issue but had two incidents in Rome over the course of the month. Someone tried to ‘help’ them buy train tickets - they where whisked away very quickly by station security so they assume it was a light extortion scam. They also got sort of swarmed by a group of young women as they stepped on a subway car. My mom reflexively stepped off the car and my dad got overwhelmed by them giggling/talking/surrounding him such that they did get some loose bills out of his pocket. He always carries a smaller amount of cash somewhere accessible but has his wallet, cards, and passport well secured or left at the hotel so he was happy his prevention methods were ‘successful’. They were more stressed about getting separated.
All that said they adored Rome They are mid 70s so probably looked like an easy target. Just watch out for inappropriately ‘helpful’ ‘friendly’ people I suppose - same as in most big cities.

I was there recently and had no problems at all. I had a crossbody bag that I kept close to me in crowds, and was mindful of my surroundings. If you encounter someone who appears to be trying to divert your attention, be on guard. And leave your passport in your hotel safe because it's a big pain if it gets stolen! Just the normal precautions were sufficient for us.
