Awesome advice, everyone. Thanks! It really gives me an idea what to look for when I shop. I LOVE the rocker chic look, but I have a hard time finding pieces that look put together without looking costume-y. I really appreciate all the suggestions!

I don't think i have any new stores to add that haven't already been mentioned so i'll just say one of my favorite things to do with i'm looking for a specific style is to type in key words on Shopstyle, Ebay or Etsy. And you can set your price point too. Good luck!

Everyone has some great advice! I echo it being an accessory kind of thing. You can pick up pieces at thrift shops, Urban Outfitters, Nordstrom, ASOS, All Saints, etc. The kind of things I have that go with rocker chic:
- Black anything
- Distressed denim
- Stompy boots
- Studded jackets, belts, bracelets, cuffs
- Leather and metal (silver, pewter, stainless) accessories

Dressing a little rock n' roll doesn't require a specific shop -- as others have pointed out, it's in the silhouette and accessories. I would also argue that edgy shoes or boots are key.

Oh, that's not much help. I do have a rocker element to my style, so let's see if I can do better:

I wear a lot of black and gray, and a lot of skinny jeans. My hair is (intentionally) scruffy. I've got five silver rings in my ears that have been there for decades. I sometimes wear a studded belt slung low on my hips. I prefer silver and leather jewellery, chunky rather than fine -- I usually wear a couple of thick silver rings and a leather wrist cuff or five-wrap bracelet. No tiny pendants on a fine gold chain! I wear a lot of tops that show my whole arm, shoulder and all, with the cuff bracelets -- this is a very rock n roll look in my mind. If I wear wear button-front shirts with my tight jeans, I roll up the sleeves to my elbows.Sometimes I wear my black leather duster. I like dark or very red lipstick. I don't do a lot of black eye makeup because it looks god-awful on me, but I like the look on others.

And I always pay attention to my shoes. They've got to be cool, and not at all preppy! Like RandomThoughts says, Docs or other laced boots scream rock n roll. Also true of black boots with buckles or other hardware! Oh, coats or jackets with hardware are just the ticket, too.

This doesn't help you with where to shop so much. I pick up things here and there. I don't shop in junior stores as a rule, but I don't shop at department stores much, either (except for bras and makeup). Usually I get clothing and jewellery from local boutiques. As for bags, I have no idea -- I'm not a bag girl and I need a new one myself!

I'm an aging rocker chick, I guess, and not nearly as rock n roll as I used to be. I think it's in the details - accessories and such.

Black is a big one but not always necessary. Chunky jewelry, especially silver. Nothing too dainty or fussy. A leather jacket always helps. Docs or other laced boots SCREAM rock n roll. Denim is great. Look for fun, funky details. I don't feel band shirts are necessary, though they can be fun. I only own one kinda bandish shirt (CBGB's) but I only wear it to bed!

RATE hairstyles can be very rocker, long or short.

Uhm.... maybe listening to some great music while getting dressed will help! I don't think it matters where you buy your clothes. I buy at Macy's, Nordstrom's, Allsaints, Etsy, Target.... Wherever. When I was truly rock n roll it was all cheap stuff from thrift shops or crappy shops on 14th St or Canal St in NYC. ;-)

ETA - Natalie, I am STRONGLY considering waxed jeans.

I'm not really a true rocker chick either but I'm a tiny bit punk rock in my fantasy style so I'm bookmarking this thread for ideas! :)

H&M and Forever 21 are good for inexpensive clothes and jewelry. I got my black leather jacket and moto-style wool peacoat from Nordstrom, and black Frye boots from Zappos. I got some plaid pants from ASOS but they didn't work out for me. But I'm still trying--I ordered a pair of red sateen snakeskin pants on sale at Anthro--keeping my fingers crossed!
http://www.anthropologie.com/a.....lateType=D

I also bought a bar of Otter wax and am contemplating trying to DIY waxed jeans with a pair of black skinnies:
http://the-coveted.com/blog/20.....0-minutes/
but I'm not sure if I could really pull off this style...I might look really silly. Does anyone wear waxed jeans IRL? I know Rute had a cool brown pair.

I also don't know if I qualify but, like Una, rock and alt. rock has always been a big influence. I get a lot of my "rock street cred" items either as hand-me downs from my husband, from the swap meet, or from thrift stores (concert tees so worn they are now tissue thin and nice and flowy, chunky chain jewelry, etc.)

The rest can really come from anywhere. Favorite brand is AllSaints, of course, but they are spendy. Recent UWP items purchased were by these brands:
Heed (UWP sweater)
Fergie (spat boots)
AllSaints (leather jacket)
Dr. Martens (wedge combat boots)
Old Navy (fishtail hem anorak)
Free People (fishtail hem dress)

For inspiration, I like to check out images from:

I'm not a rocker chic, but from what I've observed, they wear a lot of genuine concert Ts (you know, from rock shows. ;)), leather, silver rings/jewellry bought at random flea markets/motorcycle trips, and thrift store finds. The other ladies' suggestions sound good too.

I'm not sure I'm rocker chic (although it's one of my style inspirations!) but I think a lot of these items can be found at varying price points. F21 is a cheap fix, but there are items at Nordstrom that would fit the bill also, and lots of rocker chic items are thriftable (black concert t-shirts, flannel shirts, faded black jeans). Shoes seem like a key element of this look too.

I just wear black. Also maybe wear some cool retro t's with a leather jacket and high heel boots.

To me accessories are key to a rock n roll look with lots of bracelets and maybe a long necklace or earrings.

Although Hubby prefers me to dress "bombshell," for an everyday look I think I prefer a rocker edge. However, the only place I know that sells these types of clothing and accessories tend to be juniors stores, where the quality and fit isn't great.

So rocker ladies... where do you buy your clothes and accessories?
