Thank you, kkards and Christina! Those put a clear stop to what I thought were vague, difficult-to-define issues.

Actually I think the city beaches are open until this coming weekend this year, but not thereafter.

Just a reminder that post Labor Day there will not be lifeguards on duty & so it’s also likely that the city probably stops testing/reporting on water quality after Labor Day….but here’s the links…1st one is general info about the beach’s (the Rockways are a section of Queens, its about a 5 mile area, so multiple beaches), then second is the health dept page.

Thanks, Joy and Christine.
I wonder if there is some kind of office that could answer the question about water quality/how clean it is. Do you know of any?

My upstairs neighbor, who is from San Diego, surfs there. So it must be the best area around for that. I don’t know about the rest of your questions.

The water on the East.Coast has stinging jellyfish, especially in late season. Some years are worse than others. I was stung at Rockaway Beach when water skiing. Just a heads up. The only waves I remember were made by boats. It was easy to waterski other than the stinging jelly’s.

Is this it? The spot for waves between NYC & DC? Some reports sound promising—actual surfers must mean waves, right? But the reports on the trash situation getting better are confusing.

Does anyone here know about Rockaway Beach, if the water is pleasant to immerse yourself in? If not, then based on Suntiger’s advice, we will skip past DC, all the way to Virginia Beach or the OBX (not much further). But it sure would be nice not to have to do sll that extra driving!
