Mo, I get your conundrum. I really think there is a part of me that wants to defy norms and prove I *can* wear so-called age-inappropriate items because I'm just that cool, right? (insert sarcasm here because I don't really think that) I love skirts like this, and honestly being short and skinny-legged I can technically pull them off. As can you!

But lately I've done some paradigm shifting. instead of thinking the item is cool, I figure I can bring the cool to the item. Thus a longer skirt paired with edgy top and shoes takes on the cool factor of a shorter skirt (and as Angie points out the perils of flashery, I am much too tomboy to remember to act ladylike just because I'm wearing a short skirt!).

I purchased a 11" slip to wear beneath a couple of skirts that are a little flimsy (though not THAT short), and it is SO short it's useless - basically like a butt bandeau that creeps up.

I think you can do rock and roll without going quite this short, and the item will last you a lot longer, so to speak!

I've noticed this a lot in the past few years. Partly it's that I am taller than most British women, or at least I must have longer legs. But even so, it seems that everything is just way too short. Even business suit skirts tend to come to mid-thigh on me. Pair that with the seeming impossibility of buying nice looking shoes that don't have a mini platform and 5" heels and it's enough to make you despair!

I agree that it's all in the styling. You look great in short shorts, short skirts, or anything that shows your legs -- that's not the issue. So if you love it, go for it.

I have a friend in her late 50s who wears skirts almost that short. She is tall, slim, and rock n roll. She doesn't look like she's "trying too hard" because that is her style. She has wacky dyed hair (with a pink streak), a beat up moto jacket, and fake tattoos that she switches up all the time. (They are usually funny).

She's an artist. But also a professor. Head of a department, no less.

Now...admittedly, she could not get away with this if she had another job. And while she doesn't look like she is "trying too hard" she sometimes does look...frankly...a little kooky. Personally, I like her kookiness, and most other people do as well.

From what I know, you wouldn't look kooky. You'd look like yourself. But yeah...it's got to be a look you can own, and feel confident in. Which is maybe the biggest issue. If you can't sit comfortably and need to be adjusting yourself all the time, that's not a good idea.

Honestly, I would pass on that one. Look at how low it's sitting on the model's hips -- this is a SHORT skirt. Mo, you can rock a short skirt, but I think this one is a bit too much. Or too little. I would keep looking.

FWIW, the problem is sitting in a short tight skirt at any age. As a beach cover-up, it's great over a cozzie. As a going out skirt - it's a different story. Shorts this length don't flash you know what in the same way. You can cross your legs just fine. And a flared short skirt provides coverage when you sit because of excess fabric. I vote longer skirt. xo

Mo, I echo Denise's comments. It's often in the styling. Case in point...I saw a gorgeous woman while shopping on Friday. I would guess she was in her 60's and she was wearing a very modern and trendy outfit. Skinny jeans, tartan silky blouse with a shorter sweater layered over it and ankle boots. She looked soooo good, she had somehow made the outfit work for her and in no way looked like she was trying to be anything other than the age she was. She looked comfortable and for me that's key. I get it if you are not comfortable in the skirt that short but if you are ...go for it.

This one is 11" -- same model, but different color, I think?
http://www.6pm.com/pierre-balm.....7361-denim

I also think you can rock the shorter skirt Mo. I know you'd style it appropriately. But only you can know whether you would feel comfortable wearing short skirts anymore...

Earlier this year, I was at the polls and chatting with a neighborhood poll worker, an older man. A woman came in, who was a poll worker in another polling place and seeing him rushed up to him. She chatted animatedly and only when she turned to go did I realize she was wearing one of those items that is a mini skirt attached to leggings. I only noticed it because a not-young blogger had written about buying one and loving it. It looked completely suitable for this animated woman, who was short, curvy and 67.

I think you could pull this off Mo. If you wore it with some more classic pieces, it would come off as age appropriate. It's the full-on treatment where things look too young. The tight top, sky-high heels, tight tight moto jacket etc. I think a woman even in her 60s can pull off a shorter dress or skirt, the rest of the outfit has to be styled in a less predictable way though.

For example, if a 60 year old woman with fabulous legs wore a mini skirt (although perhaps not as short as on the model, but models are 6 ft!) with a loose turtleneck or white button down shirt, and tights and a lower to mid-heel shoe, it could look really good and not vulgar.

The look would be a bit daring for an older woman but not wrong. I use this as an example because Mo you are just in your 40s so it would be even easier to translate this concept to a workable look. At your age you don't just have to limit it to one daring piece, you could combine a few daring pieces and pull it off.

I know I'm not the only middle ager with a rock n roll spirit. I think the issue is no one is calling out for it. Unfortunately, some my age will go with the 20 year old's look because it's the closest thing to what they're looking for. I hate to say it, but this is more me than a 20" denim skirt from the Gap, age appropriate or not.

Yup. Too short.

Rock n roll is youth culture. That is why it is hard to find rock n roll style clothing that also looks somewhat age appropriate. Not impossible -- just tricky.

I was thinking that just last night. We went to a rock musical (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson) and all the actors were in long pants, coats, long sleeves, and all the actresses were very short skimpy low cut dresses with lots of skin showing. Why is our culture like that?
