Haven't worn low rise in many years, they make me nervous! Saw an article on MSN that they're coming back though....
Both of my pairs of jeans are high rise, 10 inch, but some of my trousers are mid rise.

Interesting.

I measured my three current pairs of jeans (two are in storage for summer so not available)

They are all in the 11-12 inch region - and feel good - I think they are high rise but not super high. I suspect my Superdry jeans are more like 8 inches and the rise was annoying me last year (but I love the leg fit).

I am 5 ft 8 inches and think I am short waisted.

I am 5'7", with a long waist and a high rise. Add a curvy bottom, and a 9 inch rise is too low for me to wear as it barely covers my butt. A 12 inch rise is mid-rise to me. I stopped wearing jeans when only low rises were available at retail because nothing would fit. I am happy with all the "high" rises available at retail now.

A 10 inch rise hits my bellybutton. Anything above that feels like a bruise wnd looks ridiculous on my shirt waist.

Anything below a 9 inch rise, and I get a muffin top. My sweet spot is narrow and I guess is on the mid-high side. To keep currentl, I’m doing a semi-tuck to show off the rise. But I couldn’t really change what I was buying by much at all.

These conversations always bring home for me why it's so difficult to buy off-the-rack. I'm 5'4" most days (5'5" at my last physical; I blame more yoga and a new mattress ), with a 31" inseam for trousers and a relatively long rise. A 9" rise sits at my hips, 12" at my belly button, so those are the two ends of my rise spectrum, and I happily wear anything in between. The low-rise years, when 7.5-8" was the highest you could find, were tough for me. I spent more time than I care to admit hitching up my jeans to prevent plumbers crack. My best pants all came from the thrift store.

I'm nodding along with Taylor and Suz. Body type AND your figure flattering priorities have a lot to do with your rise and tucking preferences. You gals make a lot of sense. Janet and Lisa P confirmed your musings.

I've liked it ALL. I wore low-rise A LOT and enjoyed it. I like mid-rises and still wear them. Now I like exposed high rises best.

IMPORTANT EXTRA PERSONAL QUALIFIER: I don't wear heels, and like the look of a longer leg line. Tucking into high rises lengthens my legs from the thighs upward, which is a proportion I prefer with flats. Most of you will wear two inch heels or higher, which visually kicks low and mid-rise proportions back into long leg line territory.

I’m laughing at the fact that I’m 3-5” taller than many of you talking about 10” inseams being high rise, and I have the same measurement! All my height is in my legs, and that may sound good to the short-legged, but it also means that I have a squat and curvy torso, so emphasizing that trait with a high exposed waist has a most unflattering effect (especially when I am in the upper end of my weight/size range as I am now). A high rise of 12” or more is downright comical on me if I don’t leave a top untucked to hide it.

Suz and others, yes, proportion is everything! When I said I was looking for a pair of low-rise jeans, I had in mind a pair of flares--so the proportions will definitely be different on those than on, say, ankle-length low-rise jeans. I will be adding a heel also, which further changes the proportions.

I am short, 5'2", with a longish rise for my height. On me, a 9" rise is just at my belly button. I prefer 10" if I want it to be obvious that I'm wearing high rise. I could probably do an 11" rise if I wanted. But I might get a waistband digging into my ribcage at that point.

I have one pair of low-rise bootcuts, which I'm wearing tonight, coincidentally. I just measured the rise, and it's 7". I'm not sure that anything lower than that would stay on. (The waistband on these hits right at my hipbone.)

shevia, that's interesting that the thrift stores are full of low rise. It makes a lot of sense.

My 3 pairs of jeans are all high but two have got an elastic waist and are 11 inches. They sit just nicely above my tummy-button and hold me in. But I'm not showcasing the waist or the rise! Those elastic waists are hidden!
My NYDJ are not elastic waist but I actually had to sew a bit at the back to draw it in because I am so sway backed and they didn't sit right. So may as well buy elastic waist even if not styly?

Low rise is an easier fit on me because my waist needs a bigger size than the rest of me. But I am not interested in low rise jeans right now at all. My most worn pairs are mid-rise that are a bit high on 5'3" short waisted me. But I keep trying high rises, because with jeans a slight variation in the cut makes all the difference on me. Interestingly, the thrift stores are almost all low cuts now (makes sense and shows how pervasive the high waist preference is now).

I've never owned low rise pants; they have never fit, much less flattered me. I have an extremely long waist and I'm thinking a long rise. Pants hitting my ribs is inconceivable; I've never found a rise too long. I've never complained about the rise in NYDJ. Most of my jeans and pants are mid-rise because that's the best I could find for me. Now, I have a few of high rises, except IMHO they don't hit me all that high, even if they are Regular and not Petite sizes.

I really love high rises because it means I can skip a belt if I so choose. But I can't justify ditching all my mid-rises because I have so many, and most are on the higher side of mid-rise anyway.

Taylor, that actually makes us even better in terms of comparison. You see how the smallest differences in proportion make all the difference -- if you went by "body shape" you and I might both me slim hourglass/rectangles. But it's the up and down proportions that make the difference here. Gryffin's another great one to compare because she is around the same height and a slim rectangle but longer legged. She loves and looks fab in leggings, and long over lean -- a look I adore -- on others!!

I agree with Taylor. Body variations make the already meaningless labels even more so! And Gigi, I'm with you -- I want them to tell me how high the rise is -- that is more valuable than saying "low" "medium" or "high."

I'm 5'4" on a tall day. (Probably closer to 5'3" but let's not go there. Ha!)

My waist is a bit on the short side. My rise is quite long for my height. My legs are on the shorter side but not by an enormous amount -- I'm almost balanced. Still, every inch counts!

Here's the thing. As far as flattery is concerned, it's not as simple as the guidelines would have you believe. Truly low rise jeans are unflattering in that they shorten my already short leg line. Plus, if they get below 7", they cut into my hip bones in a horrible way -- ugh!! But...add a 2 inch heel, make those jeans full length, and semi tuck a slightly fitted top, and my shortish waist looks almost willowy.

Still, since they are my least comfortable rise, I've let them all go.

Mid-rise -- say 8" to 8.5" is comfortable. It's good for semi-tucking. It looks sort of low-ish rise on me, however, and without heels, definitely shortens my leg line.

9" comes to about an inch from my navel. It's not super high, but definitely not low. It's a nice balancing look on me, and looks better than the lower rise pants with flats.

10 is very high on me, and 11 is a super high rise -- right up to or above the navel. I have a few jeans that are about 11" and I like and wear them. They feel current. I do find, however, that they tend to emphasize my shorter waist and make my rise look very long. So the shape of the leg becomes even more important. They have to taper a bit or else be wide leg.

To go any higher than that would mean digging into my rib cage with every move -- not fun! Plus, it would really emphasize my shorter waist. So 8.5 to 10.5 is probably my personal sweet spot, depending on the style.

The CoH Rockets are about 9".

The Olivias are about 11."

The Caras are about 9" or a bit less.

The Dres are about 8.5 I think?

Ditto for the CoH Elsas.

The Gap are about 10" I think.

Note that even when they give that measurement it is not always completely accurate.

I still wear low rise . I have about 2/3 low rise 1/3 mid rise . I have a very large denim collection (as well as other types of pants ).
I think Lisa is right about low rise not being available at retail too much because it has been about one year since I have purchased low rise denim. All I see now is high rise .

Again , I believe the ability to wear low rise or high rise is a combination of factors . Body type , weight distribution , long waist , short waist , long legs or short legs etc . Those factors ( among others I’m sure ) .....even the slightest variations in those factors affect the visual aspect as well as fit .

High rise with a top tucked-in on me absolutely does not look right to my eye , nor do they feel right . I am too short waisted and long legged , even though I am considered short-ish .

I could make them work though . I simply put a boyfriend length sweater Or longer sleek blazer over the ensemble. But what would be the point of trying to camouflage the high rise !

I’ve whined about this all over the forum but I’ll add my data point. I’m 5’3” with a proportionally short torso. I prefer pants that are mid-rise for me, hitting just below the bellybutton. That’s a front rise of about 7” for skinny styles, I can tolerate up to 8” in straight leg/boyfriend type cuts. Very difficult to find just now!

I’m amazed by people who can wear jeans of a variety of different rises! If pants hit above my bellybutton they are digging into my diaphragm. There is just not much real estate to play around with!

I share the frustration with the lack of standardization between, and even within, retailers. Gap has recently been selling a “low rise” skinny with a front rise of 9.5”. I believe J Crew markets their 9” rise toothpicks as “high rise.” Lol words have no meaning!

I still maintain this cut is not great on a lot of people, but nor do I think many women are still wearing a true low rise. After all, that cut hasn't been available at retail for quite a few years now. A high-rise pant or jean is really, really tricky to get right - and the size you wear in a regular rise jean will have nothing to do with the size you need in a high rise. I'm not a big person, nor do I have a big rib cage or a particularly big waist. I am pretty dead average. A high rise jean barely buttons around my torso and is way above my navel. Super uncomfortable to sit in. They are meant for the lean and long, and not much will convince me otherwise, unless I see some picture evidence Sorry - this is a touchy point with me, I guess.

Looks like there is not a lot of love for low rises on the forum, lol!

I hadn't thought much about consistency in what retailers call a high rise vs. a midrise. I am grateful when retailers list the actual rise in the details, because then you can make a more informed decision about whether the rise will work for you. I also hadn't thought much about how something labeled midrise might actually be high rise for those with a shortish rise. I have a longish rise, so I don't usually run into to problems with things being too high rise.

As many of the comments mentioned, it's great that there are so many choices out there right now.

Things are mid and high rise on me FAST because I have a short rise. 10 to 11 inches is instantly high rise and almost in line with my belly button.

I passed on all low rise jeans a while ago. I have two pairs of mid-rise jeans left and they feel odd when I wear them - I am VERY used to high rises and showcasing them. Eye has 100% adjusted. See Finds. I am keeping them for now though.

I am finding that jeans labeled high rise look like mid rise on me and those labeled mid rise seem more low rise, but I am not tall. I suspect it is my short waist giving a false illusion. Right now I have a variety but have passed on most that seem low rise. There are lots of jeans out there. I just have not found mine yet. Maybe this spring when one does not have to deal with so many layers. I seem to have mostly Paige and NYDJs as keepers. They are not high rise on me though. I plan to try new offerings this spring.

I am a fan of mid rise. I have only one pair of truly low-rise jeans left but I liked them because I am very short from shoulder to waist, and the lower rises helped elongate my torso and evened out my proportions.

These days, however, I’m carrying more weight around the muffin-top zone, so I’m embracing a moderate rise. I have a couple of higher rises but don’t tuck into them as it creates really unfortunate proportions on me. I hope that good mid rises continue to be available. I will never go back to truly high or low rises.

Most of my closet is mid rise as I have replaced everything in the past 3 or so years due to weight change. I’m hunting for a low high rise (10”?) full length boot cut or widish leg jean in a non whiskered light wash. I’m being picky. And a non distressed dark wash. Dipping my toe in the trend and trying to de-orphan some shorter tops.

I have a long torso so low-rises always made me look oddly short-legged... I held on to some beloved high-rises through the low-rise wave, and quickly culled all pairs of low-rise once mid-rise became easier to find.

Recently, I have been replacing tattered/worn mid-rise with high-rise in ankle or full length (I realized most of my pairs are cropped and my ankles have been FREEZING) to ensure I have a few of each. I've added finds for those that are working for me (these are my essentials - so, dark or medium wash only; I didn't include white or colored denim). The AG stilts are mid-rise and the ones I wear most. The Levi's skinny classic are REALLY comfortable for a high-rise and fit more like a straight leg than a skinny. The AG flares are my go-to in drier weather.

I will always have several pairs of mid-rise, as I find them more comfortable for lounging and travel. I would say my closet is about 1/3 high-rise, 2/3 mid-rise, 0 low-rise.

It’s funny: I have a hard time getting rid of my low rise pants, I think because the rise is often covered by the top. So I have held on to all of my low and mid rise pants.

Another short waisted person here - who never did buy into the true low-rise look either . A true high-rise doesn't look great on me as it really emphasizes my less-than-flat stomach and creates a big visual expanse of denim , which does nothing for me. I haven't the time nor patience to try on tons of jeans, so just wear whatever is in my drawer right now. I do have my eye on these (and a a few other The Looker options ) but am annoyed that they are over $300 Cdn. Where are the cool, less expensive jeans??

I am short waisted, so most low rise jeans fit more like mid rise on me. I have a very tight window of rises that I can wear, 7-9". It is interesting that some retailers consider a 9" a midrise and others a high rise. I was never a lover of low rise jeans. They were popular during my kids' toddler years and all the leaning over, bending, and floor time...it always felt like I was going to lose my pants and expose things better left covered. As I mentioned in another post, the ranges of styles and fits in jeans right now is so great. Women are all built so differently and I love having lots of options to choose from that are flattering AND stylish.

No more low rises for me. I'm so happy that high rise and mid rise are in style. such a pleasure to be able to stand up and not have to hike my jeans up each time. High rise's really help to keep my stomach in check and I'm now starting to purchase a few shorter tops and am feeling more current.
