It's a vintage Helmut Lang leather jacket from the 90s. I think the lining just gave out along the seam. I wish I were a better seamstress but I'm positive adding fabric will create lumpy seams that will show through the back of the jacket? No?

I agree with LauraB. I would slip a strip of matching lining behind the rip, turn under the raw edges of the tear and blind stitch them onto the inserted fabric. This way you would create an inverted pleat and allow more movement in the lining. The fact that it has ripped suggests it has been under strain, so extra fabric would alleviate that problem. I'd even go so far as to cut the insertion on the cross, to create even more ease.

I think an extra strip of fabric lying under the tear then top stiched on either side might work. It won't look pretty but it's on the inside anyway? Something like this: http://www.blogforbettersewing.....trips.html
Good luck!
Duct tape! Seriously, if the colour matches it won't show. Or else some iron on fabric (the kind used in hems) might hold it closed.

you know linings are sometomes cut generously across the back, so you could try pinning it to see if it pulled or not

I wouldn't have thought so as there are already seam lines in the lining? If you used a very lightweight fabric and stitched carefully. Obviously it's tricky without seeing it in person. Are you sure you couldn't just re-stitch or is it too far gone?

Wouldn't that leave a bulge from the stitch lines when I wear the jacket? The leather is very thin and soft.

If you really don't think there is enough to fold and stitch without it pulling tight then how about getting a bit of lining fabric in a similar shade and maybe cutting a long triangular shape that you could sew over the top to hide it? If you have the flat edge along the neckline and the point at the bottom, and made sure it was centered then it would just look like a back neck facing in a fancy shape.

Not sure there is enough to simply fold and restitch, and I really don't want to reline the whole jacket! Any ideas? Thanks!
