Most recently my Ann Taylor white clam diggers had to be laid to rest. I bought them about 7 years ago, so they had a good run. I suspect that either my Munroe black booties or Halogen yellow seamed pencil skirt is next on the list.

Smittie, yes - it definitely pulled its weight!

Gryffin, I agree about Zara not being made to last. Although I think back then some items still had better quality. I haven't been at Zara for quite a while now because I feel like it has gotten much worse.

Dee, perfect jeans are definitely hard to let go...

Suz, I'm definitely grateful. Interesting how the right pieces can have huge influence on our whole style, right? You look great in your tank top.

JAileen, the fabric isn't in very good condition, rather thinned out and tired in the folds. I just let it go.

Thanks Elly. Yes, worn in items are great. Only works if the item has a certain quality to start with, unfortunately. And sometimes you wear them out before you can wear them in....

Astrid-- I love it when you do these "time capsule" posts-- you're sense of style and beauty as a young woman has grown so much over the past couple of years. I had no idea that that lovely skirt I'd often admired on you made you a skirt wearer! I'm sure something wonderful will come along to take it's place.

Letting go of things can be hard for me-- I love when items "wear in" instead of wear out. This is probably why I love good leather boots and denim so much, along with nice cotton shirts.

My most recent mourned items were a top and sweater that fetched many compliments and developed some small holes. Some of my greatest mourned losses were jeans and boots that finally gave up the ghost or died too young--- or tops I loved that suddenly didn't button over the girls. Argh!

Fantastic wear from your skirt. If the fabric is in good shape and you still like it I think you should replace the zipper too.

I had a couple pairs of bootcut jeans that gave out last spring. I wore them for several years until they started to shred.

Very sad news, Astrid. But your skirt had a good life and gave you everything it had. It taught you to love skirts and paved the way for a style evolution.

The last item I wore out before I could bear to let it go was...well...something I haven't let go, and it's also from Zara. My mixed media navy tank. It is only a few years old, but it has had a LOT of serious wear. Oh how I love that tank...but I must have stained it with grease and then tried to wash too vigorously and some of the dye came out so it is noticeably faded in the front. It's also pilling in back but I was willing to overlook that. I don't think I can ignore the faded spot, though, or not for long -- I'll keep it until the end of the summer and then sadly let it go.

Aw, so sorry to see it go! But you clearly got a lot of use out of it during various stages of your style.

I finally let go of my favorite pair of jeans a year or so ago. They were lucky brand from before they stopped making them in the U.S. and they fit perfectly in the waist (didn't need a belt) and were fluid through the thighs. They are the only item of clothing I truly wore out (holes in multiple seams) and had to let go.

Astrid - I so feel your pain. I've relined blazer until the fabric is too shiny or starts to pill. I wore my old leather jacket to the point it would have needed to be redyed and the pockets were all ripped out. It's why I'm so taken with duplicating. My EF tunic is pilling but one is waiting in the wings. My beloved Gibson Riding Jacket, which I can't find an upgrade for, is getting a few pills and I have it's twin ready to go. The list is endless. If I love I love and I do that for a long time. So hugs to you. Perhaps you can use the skirt as a template to have another made? Either way I'd consider archiving it a big, if it's that perfect for comparision and template. Zara, like Gibson's knit jacket, was just not made for the long haul, even though so perfect in ever other way. So sad!!

Thanks so much for the commiseration everyone! Unfortunately the zip would have to be replaced completely and it has already a lot of patched up seams, so it is time I fear... I don't have a replacement yet. I definitely need a neutral skirt in a fabric that isn't wool, though! I'm going to keep my eyes open, maybe I'll come across a good replacement on Ebay.

@Denise, good to hear you could rescue your shorts!

@Maneera, definitely. I'll always remember it just for that.

@Eva, great comfortable shoes are the most difficult to let go of, I can relate.

@Diana, it's interesting how this went through different styles with me, definitely.

@Ankita, I love my pixie too. I feel great with the short hair!

@Jenn, good outerwear definitely gets worn out too, with me.

Fun to see you wearing the same skirt through all your style transformations! My London Fog trench suffered a similar demise from being worn to shreds, same for my Rockport lace-up boots. I have a few tops in my closet that need to be EOL'd soon for wear reasons, too. Oh, and I always wear through the thighs in my jeans!

Awww Astrid... that's so sad...I can see how much you loved the skirt.
I too found out yesterday that my most beloved Zara pencil skirt is a goner...and I was sad all day... I guess zara clothing doesn't hold up too well, at least for me...such a shame!
You do look lovely in this skirt - maybe replace the zipper or find a similar skirt to cheer yourself up?
P. S.- I adore you in the short hair picture...so gorgeous!

Aww: rest in peace! It has served you well.

My vintage hiking boots, which began my love of lace-up ankle boots, are definitely on their last legs, which saddens me tremendously. They've been with me on all of my trips over the past few years, as well as gotten a lot of everyday wear at home too. And I've no idea how I'll replace them, since the style doesn't seem to be made anymore. Sigh.

I recognize the skirt! It really fits you perfectly. There's no way to fix the zipper? If not now the hunt begins for a replacement.

I feel this way about some of my sandals, as well as some t-shirts that get holes in them before I'm ready to give them up. I now put them in a garment recycling bag (the shoes too), rather than the landfill. H&M and The North Face accept things like this at their stores. Never noticed Zara doing this though.

Yesterday I got a pen mark on the back pocket of a pair of J Brand Bermuda shorts. I've had them for three years maybe four. I was resigned to the fact that they might have to go in the recycling bag. Then, I decided to work on the mark. It was a long diagonal pen mark in black, and the shorts are light blue. I used Spray and Wash and hot water and worked the stain by hand. Then washed the pants in cold water (because I had other things to wash, hot water would have been preferable but we're in a drought so I really think about my laundry habits). The stain is gone! I couldn't believe it. Very happy. They are very comfortable shorts and still have life in them.

I got the black Zara skirt out today, not knowing it would be the last time I would wear it. The zipper broke and I had to face what I've known for a while - this skirt is done in. I think the cost per wear for it is minuscule. I got it shortly after I started participating here on the forum on the urging of a few of my friends who wanted me to wear a skirt from time to time, which I NEVER did. I wore this skirt for almost five years, year round. And often. It was this skirt that started my love for skirts and dresses and I can't imagine going back. I would rather ditch the jeans now than the skirts and dresses.

So, you have to forgive that I'm just the tiniest bit sentimental...

What was the last clothing item that you wore out completely before you could part with it?
