Despite the controversy over the monarchy, she leaves a legacy that will be hard to match.</p> <p>Personally, I just happen to be traveling to London this week and have mixed feelings about this happening now. On the one hand it will be fascinating to participate in such an historic event but on the other hand I am worried about crowds and being able to see the touristy things I was planning. We'll just have to be flexible and go with the flow. I am not sure how she did it, but I often have wondered about one of her mottos "never complain, never explain", it takes a lot of strength to stay neutral and charming in all situations. She allowed girls/women equal right of succession. Many former realms became parliamentary republics during her reign, and she was monarch while the Empire transitioned to Commonwealth.</p> <p>None of this erases the complicated and violent history of colonization, but today the moncarchy is mostly apolitical and had no real power. In reality they exist due to the tolerance and nostalgia of the people; at this point they are figureheads and nothing more.</p> <p>But Queen Elizabeth was calm and strong and always appropriate. She handled every social affair with grace and aplomb, regardless of how she may actually have felt about the participants. Just two days before her death, she welcomed the new Prime Minister with a smile that lit the room. She will be missed. Long live the King!’ - except my mum, who broke the news to me and said it in person. I think she was extraordinary. She didn’t expect to be queen and it’s not a nice job, but she devoted her entire life to service graciously. And it’s quite insane when you think how Churchill, her first prime minister, was born in Queen Victoria’s reign.
