Rosie, the things you have recently experienced still seem pretty scary. I think you are very brave but mostly smart to have a back up plan in place. I hope the sentencing in august goes as smoothly.

Katiepea, that is a good reminder to all of us. Clothes are just stuff, no matter how attached we might get to things.

Thanks everyone, again, for the support! The good news was that I had a bag already packed in my car when I spent the night at my friends on Friday!

Wow Rosie, I'm really glad to read that it all went OK! I've been absent the past few days and only just got a chance to catch up on what did (or didn't, thank goodness) happen. I'll cross my fingers for you on August 6 as well!

Fi, no, thank goodness, I wasn't involved in the tragic bushfires in Victoria. My home was in the epicentre of the freak "The Gap" storm in Nov 2008. Going through this experience certainly made me realise that life is just so precious and must not to be taken for granted. It also taught me that possessions are ultimately just "things", that (in the scheme of things) don't really matter when it compares to the fear of dying or losing a loved one.

I guess maybe this experience has contributed to an additional bonus - I now have absolutely no difficulty cleaning out my closets (because all clothes are now viewed as ultimately being "just stuff")!

Haha, Fi, well, you did certainly make me laugh! Although, your phone booths in London were always much more fun than ours.

Medusa, thank you! I have to look at those links for future...next month. I just bought a new all in one printer that will arrive Saturday so fantastic idea to scan the important documents!

Frances, I kinda hauled a** home from work a bit before 4 when they were to announce the verdict. I made it home just fine. Frankly, it seemed like the news was trying to make it all seem much crazier than it was. This was no Rodney King riots. What is so frustrating is that much of the damage was done or incited by out of town anarchists, which I guess was the case last January, too. I am sure that will be the case next month in August at sentencing. It only got a little scary for me when the police were basically expanding their area to get everyone out of downtown, so people were walking down the street behind my apartment. Something happened (I thought I heard shots) and then a bunch of guys were arrested but no one hurt or anything terrible. Then the police were all staging on the street behind my place. That was around 10:30pm, so I got to bed a little later than usual.

All in all I did feel really safe in my building - I'm on the 11th floor, but I guess there were a few windows broken downstairs. Management got on the intercom system around 10 when everyone starting arriving by us and said to stay inside and please not to yell out the window at people in the street. DUH.

Anyway, it was a monumental decision yesterday because it was not an acquittal, and, for the most part, people did what the city hoped they would do - express their feelings and anger in a mostly peaceful way. What we were bracing for was so, so much worse.

OK, after that book I just wrote, I wanted to thank you all for your kind words and great ideas!

Rosie, did you do okay? It sounds like most of the rioting was confined to the downtown Oakland area around Broadway. My friend texted me last night that she made it home safely around 9 p.m., but it took her a while. I hear they had to close the 12th and 19th St. BART stations.

Hope you made it home safely. I'm worried Oakland will have to go through this all over again on Aug. 6th when the sentence is announced.

Rosie, that's pretty scary. I did some looking into this recently and have a few links for you about emergency kits:

http://72hours.org/go_bag.html
http://www.sff.net/people/doyl.....rg_kit.htm

Some of these are a bit more medically oriented than you may need, but you might find some good ideas. I would suggest a whistle, it's good to be able to make lots of noise if needed.

Do you have access to a scanner? One suggestion I really like is to scan important documents (passport, insurance, etc) and then email them to yourself at a webmail account (like gmail) - then you can access them from almost anywhere.

Thanks everyone. Katiepea, great advice. They have had major delays in jury deliberations, so I am going to get together all of those documents to copy tonight/tomorrow. Smart gal! That must have been scary for you with your house. Glad you were ok.

Fi...I apologize, but I had a little giggle about change for a pay phone. Very good idea, but it's impossible to even FIND a pay phone these days around here! It's kind of terrible, actually.

Again, thank you everyone!

Frances, so many commuters like your friend are in an even tougher spot than I am! From my work I can just leave and avoid downtown to head somewhere safe. I also don't have any pets. In the event your friend might need help and I can safely grab her cats, let me know!

In addition to chargers for phone etc, how about some change in case you have to use a payphone?

Also, make sure that someone knows your planned routes so that if you are later than expected they can raise an alarm.

Katie - was your house involved in the fires in Victoria a couple of years ago?

Maybe photocopies of important documents like insurance, passports, etc as Katiepea suggested? That's what I do when I travel, I make a copy of passports, itineries, etc to take with me, and a copy to leave with my mum or a friend at home in case I need them to sort anything out for me long distance.

I keep phone numbers of stuff like insurance, bank, etc, in my phone in case I need them when I'm out and about. I start them all with "Service:" so I don't have to sort through all the numbers of my friends and cousins and so on, e.g.

Service: Insurance
Service: Plumber
Service: Hairdresser (ok, I hope you won't need your hairdresser in an emergency, but you get the idea!)

Sleeping bag in case you have to crash for the night somewhere else?

Oh dear Rosie, this is very scary!

When my home was nearly destroyed in a natural disaster a couple of years ago, it was very important to have access to important papers such as insurance documents, passports, birth certificates, that kind of stuff very quickly. Just being over the top cautious I would maybe consider packing these to take with you. I guess my thinking is just along the lines of if something was to happen to your home at least you know that you have it covered.

Along these lines, I would also make sure that important phone numbers (such as insurance company, electricity provider etc) was typed into my mobile phone's contact list so in the event of having to leave quickly or power failure etc, you can still contact necessary people.

Hopefully by being prepared it will turn out to be a non-event!

Argh! Yes, I have a close friend living a few blocks away from downtown Oakland, and we were actually discussing this at the A's game last night. What to do if trapped in SF at work? Who will take care of her pets? What to do if trapped at home with the rioters making their way down to her street again and tear gas coming in the windows? The whole thing is so upsetting. However you pack your riot bag, be as careful as you can and take good care of yourself, Rosie. I'm still hoping for a peaceful outcome.

Ugh. Rosie, the first thing I would make sure of that you have a few back-up options of places to stay lined up. Then I would pack an overnight bag. Something to sleep in, a pair of jeans, a couple of shirts, and clean underwear. Plus any medications and other toiletries.

Would it be better if you worked from home for the week?

Rosie - HUGS.

Comfy shoes, your vanity case, medicine and a few fab dresses. That should do it along with practical clothes.

You are very much in our thoughts. Good luck.

Rosie,

The whole thing is such a mess--I remember how awful it was when the incident happened.

I live nearby in Berkeley, so know that if you need somewhere safe to be if anything happens, you can always come here. I live in a pretty safe part of Berkeley.

Good luck getting your gear together, and hopefully people will react in a sane way to whatever the verdict is.

Rosie, I hope it comes to nothing and that you were well prepared for no reason. Please keep us posted about how you're doing.

I would definitely second Khris's advice to put chargers for anything important (cell phone, laptop) in your car. And have a little extra cash stashed somewhere since bank machines can be hard to access in an emergency. Do you have pets to be concerned about?

Oh, what a frightening thing to contemplate. Keep it simple and bring the necessities. How many days do you plan to prepare for?

I don't have anything constructive to add Rosie but just wanted to say that I will be thinking of you.
