Wow - really? This is how bad it is there? In addition to the threat of Zika and Super Bug Infections? I think I'd be looking for an excuse not to go. Gulp.

My Rio colleagues dress just like us in San Francisco, but that may be a case of overwhelming company culture.

On the danger tangent - Amnesty International has just released an app with Rio in mind, an app to locate crossfire, so you can avoid places where shooting is going on (!)

Thanks for the advice! (We will be with a business group so they will select the events we attend.) I will prepare for warm and humid!

I lived in Brazil a long time ago and more recently traveled back to Sao Paulo, but not Rio. It cannot be stressed enough that crime is rampant in the cities of Brazil. Have nothing on your person that can be grabbed, keep everything close to your body or beneath your clothes. No jewelry, not even inexpensive stuff. I hope that they have tens of thousands of security personnel.

It's hot and can be pretty humid, and anything goes style-wise in Rio. I had never heard of lycra in the U.S. before I lived there in the '80's but bike shorts as fashion were all the rage. Bodycon prevails. It's a riot of a city, cariocas are super friendly and it will be a huge experience for sure. Aproveite! Have a great time.

Hello, I have travelled to Rio several times. It is a great idea not to bring jewellery due to the high crime rate over there. Keep valuables hidden from plain sight.

That being said, Rio is also a fantastic city for sightseeing. July & August are the two best months to travel there as it is less hot. Light t-shirts, light summer dresses, light shorts, flip flops are what the locals wear. Sunblock, sunscreen and a hat is also recommended.

Have fun! Which Olympic events are you going to see?

We will be attending the Olympics in Rio and I am wondering what are some appropriate things to pack. I will have one small carry on bag. We will be there five days with two events to attend each day (as well as dinners and lunches.) Everything will be casual. There will be a lot of walking involved and I assume sitting in bleacher seats. I would like to dress fairly understated and will be not be taking any jewelry as accessories. Does anyone live in Rio? Has anyone attended the summer Olympics berfore? What is appropriate dress for South America? It is winter there in August but the weather looks like it will be fairly warm. Thanks for any suggestions!
