And yes, Mae, in case we're just giving you a bunch of information you didn't ask for and ignoring your actual question -- please do post photos as soon as your membership allows it!

I must caution you, however, that it's unlikely that anyone here will see a problem of the magnitude that you see. These tend to be the sorts of things that are more apparent to us than they are to others. We will do our best however, and will not try to talk you out of what *you* see.

Mae, here is another suggestion, because sometimes a phone call can feel like too big a step when you're in pain. Text "GO" (or "START" or anything really) to 741-741

Crisis Text Line Free, confidential, 24/7

741-741

Do you have to feel suicidal to use it? Nope.

Will you be bothering them if you're not actually suicidal? Nope.

Will they think your problem is trivial or silly? Nope.

Will you be talking to a robot? Nope, real people only.

If you use one of the major cell carriers, the texts won't even show up on your records, they'll be scrubbed automatically.

How do I know all this -- I'm a volunteer counselor for Crisis Text Line. (Interesting factoid: it's a non-profit that was founded by Nancy Lublin, who also founded Dress for Success, where Angie volunteers as a stylist.)

You can see Nancy's 2012 TED talk about Crisis Text Line here: https://www.ted.com/talks/nanc.....aves_lives Warning: some of the texts she quotes are quite difficult to hear about and may be triggering. In 2012, Nancy thought the line would be used mainly by teens, but now we know it is not limited to teens at all. I "talk" to people of all ages every week.

I echo Chewy and Isabel's very wise suggestions. If your appearance is truly causing you this much distress, and in particular if you feel life isn't worth living because of it, please seek help in real life-and consider a compassionate counselor who can help you unpack these troubling concerns.

I have a very asymmetrical face, too. It's obvious every time I'm fitted for glasses; the optician has to do some clever manipulation to get frames to sit straight. You'll see I have a dramatic side part and angled bob, and my face looks much better if photographed with my left side angled toward the camera.

Does that make me feel unhappy? These days, no-it's just how I'm made. But starting from when I was 8 and into my mid-teens I remember scrutinizing my appearance to try to figure out which part of my face made me ugly. It was agonizing and not a healthy way to live, and I hope you can move into a place where your appearance doesn't upset you so much.

I'm so sorry to hear about your emotional pain. It is difficult when we women identify so much with external beauty. In fact, I read a study some years ago where women who wanted a professional edge did not overall want to go back to school for more training--instead they wanted to get plastic surgery! That says volumes about our culture.

I read in a book about style (The Triumph of Individual Style) that if you have asymmetric features, oftentimes an overall asymmetric wardrobe will look good on you. That may be something to try. There are a lot of asymmetric cuts on the market now, so maybe you could spend a day at the mall just trying things on as research. You wouldn't even have to buy anything.

Aw, sweetie. There is more to life than how you look. If you really feel that you are not beautiful, and that not being beautiful is so important that it makes you want to die, then I do agree with others that you may need some professional help.

For what it's worth, I've got an asymmetrical face, too. What's particularly annoying is my eyes, which are quite different -- one is rounder, and one is flatter. It has always been so. Age has not improved matters, since I seem to have sustained more sun damage on my left side (the side that is exposed while driving a car!). If I could fix it, I would, but I can't and I've come to accept it. After all, I don't expect that my asymmetrical face affects other people's enjoyment of my company. :-)

It turns out that many people have noticeable asymmetries (although to most outside observers, these asymmetries appear minimal). You are not alone. But if you are unable to enjoy life because you're so focused on it, you may have "body dysmorphic disorder". Here's a description:

"BDD is a body-image disorder characterized by persistent and intrusive preoccupations with an imagined or slight defect in one's appearance.

"People with BDD can dislike any part of their body, although they often find fault with their hair, skin, nose, chest, or stomach. In reality, a perceived defect may be only a slight imperfection or nonexistent. But for someone with BDD, the flaw is significant and prominent, often causing severe emotional distress and difficulties in daily functioning.

"People who have body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) think about their real or perceived flaws for hours each day. They can't control their negative thoughts and don't believe people who tell them that they look fine. Their thoughts may cause severe emotional distress and interfere with their daily functioning. They may miss work or school, avoid social situations and isolate themselves, even from family and friends, because they fear others will notice their flaws."

I just want to say that I am also very concerned, Mae, that you say there is no point to your life anymore. I agree with Chewy that if that is indeed how you feel, you should reach out to someone IRL. They don't need to see it the way you do to have compassion and support you with coming to peace with it. What will happen if we don't see it ? Will you be able to accept that and move on ? Many times, it is better to have someone with some experience to guide you . There are many hotlines and alternatives. Good luck !!!!

AND , I also am asymmetrical because of scoliosis and more sun damage to my face on the left side .

Read this story about mirrors and faces. The way that you part your hair may make a difference.
I have a very crooked nose from a sledding accident when a child as well as other problems, but few seem to notice although I didn't believe it. These things give one character and uniqueness. Most people are more concerned with themselves to notice. The way that you make others feel when they are with you is so much more important than what you look like.

You're not alone!
I've got a crooked nose (big too) crooked mouth, and they are crooked in opposite directions.
I have asked people about it and they don't really see it nearly as much as I do. People tend to take in your face as a whole.
Anyway: I hope this helps and that you don't feel like this is the end of the world. If it is really sad for you to think about your asymmetrical face, then yes, talk to a professional. This type of thing should not be ruling your life.

I have a very asymmetrical face (and body thanks to scoliosis). Many of us do. Please believe your family and friends when they tell you they don't see it -- no one, and I mean no one, sees our "flaws" the way we do.

It sounds like you are very distressed and sad about your appearance. When you believe that something like this is ruining your life, I agree that it's a very good idea to talk to a mental health professional. I'm sorry you're feeling such despair, and I hope you seek some help. I've been through counseling for my own reasons, and it's not a quick fix -- it's hard, but it is usually worth it. Sending you the best of wishes.

Oh, Mae, I am so sorry you are feeling bad. You know, everyone's face is asymmetrical to some extent and I'll bet that nobody else thinks it is as noticeable as you do. And don't judge your appearance based on the Photoshopped and filtered ideals that we see everywhere now -- very few people can live up to that!. Please talk in person to someone you trust about your feelings of sadness and hopelessness.
Darn it.. well, i guess i just have to wait then.
I really dont understand how other people cant notice it, its so obvious! I look really beautiful i think from my left side, but the right side i dont even look like myself.. nose looks crooked, my smile is different... eye looks weird.. i have tried therapy, youtube videos and everything to try and boost my self esteem, but it doesnt work. Its starting to drive me nuts.
To the point where i dont see the point of life anymore. It really makes me tired to be so concious about my right side all the time, it wears me the f*** out...

Mae, have you considered that this is an issue of perception? We all have things about our physical being that we don't like, but others may not even notice. I think the real problem is not how your face looks, but rather how you feel about your face. Look into some affirmations and exercises to boost your self esteem.

So, why does my face look totally different viewed from the right side, than it does viewed from the left? The difference is HUGE, and i look like a completely different person... it has ruined my life. Im 28 now, and have struggled with this since i was in my early teens.
My family doesnt see a difference, but i know they say that just because im family. I mean, its so obvious, i can see it both in the mirror and in pics. Even on web cam i look like sh** from my right side. Im new to this forum, and wonder how i can attach photos for you all to see?
Im really struggling right now..
