Gorgeous! That does not look like a hand-sewn top. That looks like a top you see at the mall with a $70 tag.

Thank you so much for the info cjh. That sounds relatively straight forward. I shall look for the pattern but won't be making it until our spring.

Carolbee, the pattern is this
http://voguepatterns.mccall.co.....age_id=260

I got it when that brand was on sale for $3.99, which makes it easier to experiment. I made a size medium, and I generally wear a med. or size 8 top, sometimes a sz.6, and often a small now that clothing styles are less fitted. I possibly could have made the small but eased out to the medium in the hips for comfort.

If you see a longer back shirt tail in the photo in the link, note that is not included in the pattern.

The construction was easy since there are no shoulder seams, just four parts, front, back, front and back yokes, and rolled hems. If using non sheer fabric, I would draw and cut a neck facing instead of using bias tape because I just like that method better. It takes less fiddling to get the neck finish pinned and sewn without puckers or bumps. I do think a moderate stretch fabric would work pretty well, as long as you are comfortable doing the neck finish either with the bias tape or make your own finish strip somehow.

The satin wasn't too bad. My main concern with satiny/silky fabrics is to get the laid out for cutting perfectly on grain so the parts don't have odd sags or curved hems etc.

Thanks all, for your comments and questions, hope I didn't bore you with the details.

What a great top, YLF. I have pretty much given up on dressmaking. patchwork is usually the only workout my sewing machine gets. However I do love the simple T shape of this top, would it work for fabric with a bit of stretch? I often can't find a ready made top in fabric I like so would be happy to run up something simple if I have fab fabric. Can you please give pattern details?

I have been craving sewing something to wear, since the only sewing I've been doing for about 5 years is quilts, placemats, a few bags, and a few baby clothes. This pattern appealed due to its simple construction and updated style. A simple tshirt shape and some bright (gaudy) poly satin I'd had around the house for several years (forgot what the original purpose was.)

It actually fit and I liked the shape, so I paired it with dark denim Bermuda shorts, and a red belt, tried the semi-tuck (is it out of style yet?)

The best part is, it was so easy, fun, and it fits, and the pattern is adaptable to using different fabrics, maybe a lace overlay, etc., that I will try another one!

Sorry for the bad picture. My husband took it with my iPad.
