I doubt that they put polish on the boots. They were brand-new, and to my eye, they didn't look any different shine-wise than when I dropped them off. But it might not hurt to contact the cobbler before I call the company, just to be sure. And maybe the cobbler can even offer an explanation, having so much experience with leather boots.

Reducing the calf size in boots is probably a moderately difficult job. My usual shoe guy, who is really stellar, told me he doesn't do that work because it's too time consuming. So I went to a new place, a place that advertised itself as a leather repair shop. The charge was US$70, which I think is reasonable for that kind of work. I had another cobbler reduce the calf on a previous pair of boots, and he charged me only US$45, but he also took 2.5 months to do the boots. He took shortcuts (which he told me about beforehand) too. I realized during that experience that it was quite a labor-intensive job. So I didn't think $70 was too much to pay. The work itself was pretty good--everything seemed straight--except for the fact that their machine skips stitches, and the gal at the front desk when I picked them up had to go over some of the stitches for me to even things out. I think the boots are actually a little tight now, but since they are leather, I'm hoping they will loosen up. I've never had a problem with tight calves on boots before, ha ha!

You can't get every pair of boots reduced in the calf, so make sure that whatever pair you buy can be returned in case it can't be done. This is the reason I went to the $45 cobbler for my previous pair of boots--he was the only one who would work with those boots, since they couldn't be reduced in the calf without a lot of hassle. That is why he had to do a shortcut, which was basically taking out the excess only from the zipper side of the boot and assuming that the back seam would still stay straight when the boot was zipped back up, "poufing" out the extra leather on the outside of the boot instead of at the back. (It's hard to explain without showing it to you, and I can't post pictures yet.) One of the reasons that the previous pair of boots was so hard to work with was they had a lining in the inside of the boot that covered all the seams, so he would have had to rip out the whole lining. With the LC pair I just got, the lining and the outer leather both had visible seams.

Hmmm. Well, I would definitely call them and see what happens. Just thinking...is it possible that the cobbler who reduced the calf size put some polish on the boots?

Also, was this a difficult alteration? (She asks, selfishly. As someone who has boot fit problems I am curious to know!)

Re the service -- I was dealing with the flagship store and it seems to be store- by - store. Talking to head office might be different.

Hi, ATLynn,

My socks got marked up a little too, though not as bad as the pants. So yes, you might want to be careful with your new booties. I'll keep the dry cleaner option in mind--that is a good backup if I need it.

Thanks for the reply, Suz. I did read your post about your experience with LC. Wow! It was quite unbelievable. I felt so bad for you. After I had bought my boots, I happened to go online to Amazon, where I think someone was selling some LC items. A lot of the reviews mentioned terrible customer service. I will be careful myself in the future!

I sure hope that these boots aren't defective, because I did have the calf reduced (I have only 12-inch calves), so I can't exchange these for another pair without having to repay for another calf reduction. But based on your experience, I'm guessing that LC wouldn't offer that option anyway.

Obviously what I'm experiencing isn't a common problem, as I don't have gobs and gobs of responses to this thread. I think your suggestion to contact LC is a good one, and I will do that.

I'll be doing laundry on Saturday and will be praying that the stains come out. I just used a stain stick for now. If it doesn't work, I'll try Oxyclean. Oxyclean got out some strawberry stains from my hand-wash-only BR cardigan, so it has been my ace in the hole in the past.

Oh no! I hope you can get the stains out. You might want to take to a dry cleaner if the stains are still there after your first wash. Agree with Suz that you should contact the company. Maybe they can at least give you an indication of the dye type used to help figure out the best way to treat the stain.

I have a new pair of black booties (Taryn Rose, so also not inexpensive) that have stained both socks and stockings at the heel, but I didn't notice any marks at the heel. I'll have to be careful to remember not to wear them with light colored jeans or trousers to be safe.

Oh - how frustrating!! And yikes! I just bought La Canadienne boots -- a different style, but still! I will be very careful with them you can be sure!

I do think any footwear that has dye might involve some dye transfer, but if you bought from La Canadienne I would call them and see what they say. It seems excessive to me. These are not an inexpensive item!

I think you're probably right that if you wear them with dark items for a while the dye transfer will stop, but in the meantime...ouch! Hope the stains came out.

Hi, all,

Today I wore my new black riding boots over my new cream jeans. (OK, some will say that tall black boots and cream pants are not an OK color combination for tall black boots, but that's a subject for a different thread!). Anyway, after I went for a 30-minute walk, I took the boots off and discovered black marks along the inseam of my jeans, by the zipper. I've since put stain remover on the jeans in the hopes of getting the stain out come laundry day. Has anyone else had problems with riding boots leaving marks? Do you just have to wear a tallish pair of socks and tuck the pant ends in when wearing the boots, or do you think that if I wear dark jeans with them for a while the dye will eventually cease to transfer and I can again wear the boots with lighter-colored pants?

If it matters, the boots are La Canadienne, style Stefanie.
