Thank you for weighing in, Gradfashionista. I too made some dietary changes out of self-care and self-respect. It is really hard to get that point across to other people, especially at parties. I will use your gentle explanation from now on.

Thanks for sharing!

I recall reading an article recently that made the case for 'holiday indulging', something along the lines of:
*It's once a year
*It's a holiday, not a 'holiweek'
*It's the only time of the year that you can look forward to childhood favourites, family bonding over food, etc.

I have been eating low carb over the past two months, and will continue to do so over the holidays unless something particularly appeals to be. Because I choose to eat this way for health reasons, I don't see it as a form of deprivation, but rather self-care and self-respect. I still enjoy cooking.

It's fun to revisit old posts. Thanks, Sterling.

I like your strategy. It's always good to be active and be mindful about what you put inside your body.

Personally, I do not believe in food category deprivation unless you are highly allergic to the food. Nutrition, food plans, grocery shopping, and cooking are hobbies that I am very passionate about. I believe in old fashioned healthy eating with adding the less healthy stuff in moderation. I believe in weighing yourself each day so that you control your intake of food. If you over indulge one day, minimize the indulgence the next day. That's how we get through the holidays and vacations. This eating plan does not work for everyone, but it works for me and Greg, who eat out a few times a week, and I cook a lot too.

Sometimes we all need a refresher course in life. I thought it might be fun to revisit some of Angie's older posts as part of that refresher. I picked this post: http://youlookfab.com/2012/01/.....ody-image/

I picked it because women as a group are indeed bombarded with unrealistic images of "how we are supposed to act and be." No matter how much we try to avoid it, it creeps into out psyches and affects our judgement. I try to be conscious of this and remind myself of life's reality in comparison to Madison Avenue's fantasy. I may not always be successful, but I do try.

The part about loving and respecting our bodies is especially poignant to me. Too frequently we forget to respect our bodies and all that it does for us. To care for and respect my body this Holiday Season I am consciously doing two things: (1) I am making time for a 30 minute work out, and (2) I am attending Holiday Parties with a plan to avoid overindulgences.

I hope I did justice to Angie's original post.
