Suntiger - so glad you find my essentials interesting as very basic essentials are not my thing. I am always happy if I can find a classic piece with a slight point of difference (such as my ankle boot that is in patent leather rather than plain).

JenniNZ - yes our wardrobes are reflective of our work environments. I see a fair bit of overlap between us in love of colour and also shoes. The black jacket was a NAS pick from 2017 and my one and only Nordstrom purchase.

Carter - you have the best collection of essentials - so thank you for your comments.

What a beautiful collection of essentials. I totally agree they have to be up to the heavy lifting of making the statements wearable. Fabulous job refining your choices.

I also don't wear shirts, but as you know your style is more polished than mine. I never wore them much, I guess they instinctively felt too stiff and formal for me. Maybe as well I never ended up in the corporate world!
I am with Suz in adoring that black pencil skirt for you- how elegant looking. I especially like the black jacket with brass buttons too- that one is a cross-over between yours and my styles

Suz - I do like my essentials. My style descriptors are Polished, Feminine and Playful. I find the essentials address the polished and feminine descriptors - but not the playful. This is why statement pieces are also part of my uniform. Without them, it can feel a bit too serious.

Sterling - my black jackets are very hard working and I have them for years. I have also come to the conclusion that buying good quality jeans is worth it simply because they get worn so much.

Sigh. I am another one that loves the look of woven shirts, but ended up purging all of them in 2018. Despite my purge, it surprises me that so many other people are relying less and less on them.

Your essentials look fabulous. I especially like the different silhouettes of the essential black jacket. I can see how you can easily assemble fabulous ensembles using your neutrals. Great job.

Toronto Girl and Joy - I am so drawn to colour, but find that I need my neutrals to ground the colour and black and white are definitely my favourite neutrals.

Cardiff Girl - I seem to value my statement pieces more than my essentials. However, on reflection it is the essentials that get the most wear. I am thinking that in the current year I should put most of my budget towards good essentials as I do have plenty of statement pieces already and the essentials get worn out far quicker than the statement items.

Angie - yes, my wardrobe has been put together over many years. The issue I have is that most of my statement pieces have longevity and don't get worn out as quickly as my essentials. So focusing on essentials and not getting carried away by adding more statement pieces is probably a good strategy for me - still if I find THAT white coat, it will be mine! Thank you for guiding me to a better wardrobe.

Bonnie & Rachy - white shirts can be tricky. Occasionally I have found one that worked, and then it was a workhorse, but the perfect shirt is an elusive item.

Gryffin - I am sure your leather jacket is beautiful. In fact, when I see your wardrobe additions, I am always so tempted to copy. I think I would adore owning your wardrobe!

Sal - I always go back to black... I love the elegance and simplicity of black.

Bijou you do have a stunning wardrobe and you wear it so well. I totally agree on knits and blazers. I find woven shirts too fussy irl. I think they look stunning on others but I can’t make them work. Plus I love your color palate so elegant and flattering with your coloring. I did buy the all saints dal y thinking of you. It’s very similar in cleaness of line to your motor but black rather than charcoal which works better for me. So thanks for helping me sort that out!!

Bijou, you NAILED it. This makes a lot of sense. Just as Cardiff girl mentioned - you need the essentials to make the statements shine.

You have a STUNNING wardrobe, which you've mostly put together intuitively over many years. Then you found the holes/challenges, put in the thought, and cleaned things up. Now you have a system, and are reaping the reward. WELL DONE.

Last year I posted my essentials were:
- Basic knits in light colours or black (summer and winter layering pieces)
- Skinny jeans
- Basic white shirts

On reflection, basic knits and skinny jeans are still strong in my wardrobe. Knits always need to be refreshed and I have white, pale pink and pale grey knits - all of which get worn in winter - so glad I duplicated my favourites. Skinny jeans - I am still wearing these on the weekends a lot - so yes still an essential

However, white shirts have fallen out of favour with me. I prefer knits as often I don't like the neckline underneath my jackets and blazers and I am wearing shirts underneath dresses far less than before.

New essentials to add to the list:

Black jacket (I have multiples of these in different fabrications, fits and length - definite workhorses)
Black pencil skirt
Ankle boots - black, white and grey
Black pumps

On reflection, I should have had black jacket, ankle boots and black pumps on my list last year. However, the black pencil skirt is a new item that took a while to find the "the one" and now is an essential.

Whilst I love colour, it is often grounded by essential black items and going a bit deeper into considering what my essentials are makes appreciate how hard these items have to work in my wardrobe even if they are not the hero pieces.
