Fab fit and fabric make the difference

People are getting use to wide crops

Welted knitwear makes wide crops easier to style

Great reviews, Lisa, and so glad you found your higher rise pants and jeans! I'm very tempted by the BR ones, too, as a possible replacement for an old J. Crew pair that tend to bag out too much and have awkwardly placed pockets that show their lining when I sit.

I can't wait to see that ADORABLE rust jacket and the rust pants in action. Both look like fantastic statement additions and will be sensational with your greys.

I do think there is something to your idea that it can take manufacturers a while to get the details of fit right in a newer silhouette. It's similar to how it took them a while to understand that cropped pants wouldn't fly off the shelves until they solved the footwear issue (bare legs in winter -- gah!). Once they figured out the higher shaft sock bootie, they could sell crops outside places like California, and they took off like crazy. I predict that the better they get those higher rises to fit our middle aged bodies, the more of them they'll sell.

I really like the look of that dress too, and they do have petite sizes in it (the only version I could even think about trying). Chances are, stores don't carry them ( !! Oh am I tired of THAT song and dance), but that could maybe solve the this-is-made-for-a-longer-taller-person thing. No stone unturned, and all that...

I agree about the cuts of those wide pants! I tried on a few that were stiff and made my legs look as wide all the way down as the tops of my thighs. I am not so into figure flattery as I used to be, but that was actively unflattering, and just... NO.

And Janet - further to looking squat and frumpy - that was my reaction this past spring and summer when we first started seeing these pants. I'm a couple of inches shorter than you, but somehow this go-round I don't feel as short and frumpy as I used to in them. A heel definitely helps too. I won't be tucking anything in nor wearing fitted tops either - I don't know, maybe they'll end up going back today if I can't find enough in my closet to wear them with. I am determined not to have to buy something just to wear with them.

They are pretty much up to the bottom of my bra And back to the flattery issue posed by Shevia: when the sales assistant made the comment about how flattering they are, I imagine she was referring to herself, and not the average, half-overweight middle-aged woman like me . That I *will* aknowledge and don't think they are necessarily figure enhancing. If you are really trim and have a flat belly like she did, then yes, they'd be super -flattering . What they aren't though are as horrible as some of the early high-waisted crops were- I think fits around the hip and thigh are key and maybe manufacturers are getting that part nailed down now.

Janet, Christina - that dress is also made for a long torso, and a smaller chested woman. Just playing around in the fitting room (which I hate doing - it must be that B12 shot I had last Friday) I hiked up the bottom half of the dress to shorten it and also to shorten the torso, and then it worked. I'm not necessarily pear-shaped, just fat all over, so it would work on a straight figure better than a curvy one .

Great choices for you, and the reviews are much appreciated! I love that striped dress but your description of the fit gives me pause.

I so wish I liked how I look in wide crops! They appeal to me when I see them on models and on you and others, but then I put them on and feel like I look squat and frumpy. I think I figured out that it’s because I can’t do super fitted tops anymore (I’ve gotten too thick in the middle, too much lumpage and bumpage, sigh). Maybe I’ll keep trying, especially if I see those pants at our local Anthro.

Very nice pieces! I am drawn to Anthro styles this year, maybe have to try a few. Interesting about the change in what appeals, high rise are so hard for me to fit that I can't see ever coming around to them but who knows.

What’s changed ? Time to get used to the idea , maybe . I think the tops I had to work with in the summer weren’t right . I’ve actually been wearing those jeans again - much easier to style now and surprisingly comfortable . Also , I finally hit a wall with how unfresh and staid my jeans were looking , and thus how unfresh and dated my whole look was becoming . Maybe a little more self acceptance too ?

And yes , the fabric on the leopard dress isn’t great , I agree .

Thanks for the reviews.

The McKenzie dress - although super cute - is 100% viscose, and that worries me. I stopped my clients from getting it.

I love the cinnamon wide crops! I'm a little curious, though. You were dramatically opposed to wide crops in Summer. Very unhappy with the pairs you got and against the trend (although I liked them on you!). Today, you brought home and love two pairs. What changed?

Thanks for the reviews Lisa and I'm so glad you found pants that make you happy! I think they will look great on you. I did the cropped wide legged for a bit but have given them up due to figure flattery issues....I am finding that it takes me a while to adjust to trends and this one was maybe a bit too soon for me. Maybe I will try again. How is the denim? Soft and stretchy or stiff and holding you in?

Susie - the Anthro pants are too high in the rise for me to even semi tuck. I won't be going for a waist enhancing look - that's for sure. I have to play around a bit with some tops to see what looks best, but a quick try with a fluid black cocoon-ish sweater was good. I think the shorter length helps add structure when you can't tuck.

Shevia - I know exactly what you mean. These are quite lightweight and have a beautiful hand feel and drape, and then are beautifully fitted in the bum and hips. I don't necessarily have a thick waist, I'm just carrying a lot of extra weight all over. I don't know how else to describe it. For a solid year, every pair of high waisted and wide legged pants were too stiff, and bulky especially in the fly area. These , blessedly, are not. The jeans are soft yet thickish , and have some stretch. Obviously they will be thicker around the fly area. I think my idea of flattery may have magically shifted - after a long time of rejecting this look. I feel quite "chic" (my favourite word, ha) in them - more fashion forward than of late, which makes me happy.

I am intrigued by your description of the Anthro pants. I find that a lot of the so called "flattering" high waist/wide legs are anything but on someone with a thick waist and relatively narrow legs such as me. So let's seem them in action please! The jeans too while you're at it !

Thanks for the reviews! I am so impressed with anyone who can shop in-person at Anthro. I can never quite figure out what to look at/for, so I doubly appreciate those of you who are willing to share what you find. I’m still enjoying the navy/black lace top that you found over a year ago.
