I agree with Angie; having only 2 out of 9 shoe failures is pretty darn good. I've been buying a lot of my shoes from REI because they're one of the only places with will allow you to return after wearing (they re-sell used stuff in their garage sales). I'm not sure if you have any places near you with a generous return policy like that, but it does seem like a lot of retailers are starting to offer re-selling options.

I hear you on having distinct winter and summer styles. It took me forever to crack summer style because I'd only ever focused on buying for fall/winter (shopping on a school schedule will do that to you!). I couldn't figure out how to translate the cozy, layered, chunky, tweedy looks I like for cold weather into a hot weather context. In the end I realized that summer needs its own look entirely: less woodsy-twilight and more beachy-sunset. In retrospect, it all makes perfect sense, but it took me years to get there.

I would echo Angie,l think that your style has never been better than you have shown this year.l can fully empathise with the feelings about your body.Having been a dedicated exerciser all my life and then suddenly been unable to even walk any distance for the last 2 years l can fully understand how health problems can affect ones satisfaction with your own body.It doesn’t really matter if other people say they can’t see a difference,it’s how you feel isn’t itFingers crossed that we both have a better body year this year!

Thank you all!! Admitting any feeling about my body is such a risky thing on this forum—I really appreciate you supporting me.

I was happy to return to layering when we got here a few years ago, now hope my winter style moves along like my summer one has done. At least I’ve got the footwear down!

I echo, Sal.

Stag, you've posted the best outfits that I've seen you post here, in part due to your successful shopping! A good mix of head and heart decision making. Please carry on.

That 7 out of 9 pairs of new shoes worked out well for someone who is on foot all the time like me - is VERY good going! Footwear is hard, hard, hard, when you commute on foot because the expectations are different. If you find one pair of great shoes that ticks off the boxes - yay!

How you feel in your own skin is absolutley most important :)

I think it sounds a successful year with the possible exception of footwear which is hard. You seem to purchase according to needs and what appeals, which is a good mix.

No advice on the health, muscle thing but I really like your attitude that how you feel is more important than how you look. I totally agree.

Most of my shopping this year was for foundations, either the kind that goes under everything else (underwear) or the kind that goes under my feet (footwear).

Here are the numbers
Underwear 7 purchases
Footwear 9(!!) purchases, 2 of which proved to be fails once I’d worn them enough to find out, too much to be able to return them.
Swimsuits for fun 3
Workout bikini / leggings / shorts 3
Jeans 2 (maybe 4, depending on k/r of box in bedroom)
Coats 2 (+1 blue parka moved from storage to active)
Tops 6
Christmas presents: 1 fleece topper, 1 pants

For comparison, 2020 was
Underwear 3
Shoes 1

And the last year before the pandemic, our first full year in Berlin, I bought
Jumpsuits/dresses 5
Skirt/pants 2
Tops 3
Cardi/vest 2

I’m not sure what conclusions can be drawn here. For the most part, style decisions are on hold until some life pieces fall into place.

I’ve been realizing that my summer and winter styles are probably quite different from each other. One example is that although I love busy, colorful small patterns (the kind guys call “puke” color) and wear paisley all year long, all my ditsy florals are summer pieces. Another is that I seem to want more stark contrast in winter than in summer.

I’m also trying to decide about my body; the thyroid hormones make me lose muscle, and in winter I put on fat. I haven’t decided how much energy I want to put into changing those things and to what extent I want to just accept them. To be clear, I’m well aware that I can dress this body, skinny legs, tummy pooch & all, to look nice from the outside. But how I look to others has never been as important to me as how I feel in my own skin, and in my clothes. I don’t enjoy the blanket of subcutaneous fat I’m carrying right now, no matter what anyone else thinks, and my thin thighs are far too weak. What I decide to do about it takes priority over any style considerations, but will of course impact my style.

I think my impulse buying is better—I loved my artsy cape when I bought it a few years ago, but rarely wear it. My white boots, otoh, are getting tons of wears and seem to be settling in with the rest of my wardrobe quite well. (I might do a separate WIW with white boots).

Thanks for reading. Comments, critiques, and considerations are quite welcome.
